It can handle data, calculations, visualizations, and user-written programs; it is not merely a statistics package. For someone deciding whether to learn it, the essentials are what R does well, how packages extend it, and which parts of its 2026 release matter to beginners versus package developers.
1. R is both a programming language and a computing environment
The R Project describes R as an environment for statistical computing and graphics. That means it includes tools for working with data and calculations as well as a language for writing instructions and building reusable analyses. The official overview is at What is R?.

Calling R “just a statistics package” misses its programming capabilities. It can be used interactively to explore data, or to write a sequence of operations that can be run again, modified, and shared.
2. R has the building blocks of a programming language
R includes conditionals, loops, input/output facilities, and user-defined functions, including recursive functions. Functions let you name and reuse a set of operations, rather than repeating the same instructions manually. This makes R suitable for both exploratory work and more structured programs.
#1 Best Overall
Learning R therefore involves more than memorizing statistical commands: learners also encounter general programming ideas such as controlling the order of operations and organizing code into functions.
3. Statistics and graphics are its central strengths
The R Project highlights a broad range of statistical techniques and graphics, including graphics intended for publication. These capabilities make R a natural option for exploring data, carrying out statistical work, and communicating results visually.
That breadth is not a guarantee that every analysis is straightforward or that R automatically makes an analysis appropriate. The method still needs to fit the question and the data, and producing a useful graphic still requires judgment.

4. Packages add capabilities beyond the base installation
R can be extended with packages: collections of additional functions and other resources that users install when they need them. The R Project points to the CRAN family of sites as a source of contributed packages. This gives learners a path from the core language to more specialized workflows without requiring every capability to be built into the initial installation.
When choosing a learning resource, check whether it teaches the base language, a particular package ecosystem, or both. A package-focused guide can be useful for a specific workflow, but it may not explain the language fundamentals as broadly as an introductory resource.
5. R is free software and runs on major desktop platforms
The R Project makes R available in source form under the GNU General Public License and says it runs on UNIX platforms, Windows, and macOS. The official project page provides access and project information: R: The R Project for Statistical Computing.

R is therefore not tied to a single desktop operating system or a paid commercial edition for the basic software. The R Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose goals include supporting statistical computing and teaching and training; its role is described on the R Foundation page.
6. The 2026 release context: R 4.6.1 is the reported current release
As of the R Project information available for this article, R 4.6.1, “Happy Hop,” was released on June 24, 2026. The project listed R 4.6.2, “Diversified Portfolio,” for October 29, 2026, with prereleases starting October 19. Those were planned dates, not evidence that 4.6.2 was already final. Check the R Project homepage for the latest status because release information can change.
Best Value
For a beginner, the main takeaway is to use an available, supported R release and consult current documentation when a version-specific question comes up. You do not need to master every release note before learning the fundamentals.

R 4.6.0 introduced changes that matter most when maintaining packages with compiled code or graphics devices. The official notes document these changes in Changes in R 4.6.0.
- C++ standard: The default changed to C++20 where available, with C++17 as a fallback where available. Package specifications for C++11 and C++14 were removed.
- Graphics engine: The graphics engine version moved to 17. Graphics-device packages need to be reinstalled to work with this change.
These are compatibility considerations for developers, not a reason for a new learner to postpone using R. If you maintain compiled packages or graphics-device packages, check their compatibility with the version of R you plan to use. The R Developer Page provides release information and developer resources.
How to start learning R
- Start with the language basics. Learn how to work with data, use functions, and control the flow of a program before focusing entirely on one specialized package.
- Practice with a real question. Choose a small analysis or visualization task so you can connect data handling, calculations, and graphics.
- Add packages when a task calls for them. Treat packages as extensions to the language, and learn the ones relevant to your work rather than trying to survey everything available.
- Use official documentation as a reference. The R documentation index includes An Introduction to R and The R Language Definition: The R Language documentation index.
- Check release notes when maintaining code. Version details become especially important for compiled packages and graphics devices; ordinary introductory learning can focus first on programming and analysis concepts.
R is worth considering if your goal involves statistical computing, data analysis, or graphics and you want a language that can be extended through packages. Its key distinction is that it combines those domain strengths with general programming facilities.
