Before you set out, check the destination’s official page or contact its visitor center for the exact route and current rules. Stairs, narrow passages, low ceilings, uneven ground and access options vary by site and tour; a route that is manageable for one visitor may not suit another.
What to check before you go
Look for details about the specific tour or route you plan to take. If the official page does not answer a practical question, contact the site directly rather than assuming conditions will be similar to another place.

- Stairs: Ask how many there are, how steep or uneven they are, and whether handrails are available throughout.
- Passages: Check the narrowest width and lowest ceiling, and whether you will need to crouch, duck or turn sideways.
- Surfaces and lighting: Find out whether the route is rough, slippery, wet or poorly lit, and whether visitors should expect changes in footing.
- Effort and timing: Confirm the walking distance, tour duration, pace, rest opportunities and whether visitors must complete the route without assistance.
- Rules and restrictions: Check age limits, equipment rules, mobility-device access, group requirements and whether the route is open on your planned date.
- Conditions: Ask about temperature or other conditions inside enclosed spaces, along with any route closures or changes.
- Alternatives: Ask whether a shorter or partial tour, surface-only visit or interpretive option is available on that date.
For scale, the National Park Service says the full Oregon Caves tour includes more than 520 steps, many of them steep and uneven, with no handrails in some areas. Its route also includes an 88-foot passageway with a ceiling as low as 45 inches; the cave stays at 44°F (7°C). These are details of that Oregon Caves route, not general expectations for archaeological sites. Oregon Caves tour information (page last updated September 5, 2024).

Assess the route against what you can comfortably do, rather than relying on a broad label such as “easy” or “moderate.” Consider the combined demands: repeated steps, uneven footing, limited headroom, time on your feet and the ability to keep moving with a group. A passage that requires crouching may be a different challenge from stairs, even if each sounds manageable on its own.

Oregon Caves describes its full cave tour as moderately strenuous and advises that it is not recommended for people with certain heart, breathing, balance or walking difficulties. That guidance applies to its tour; it is not a general medical rule for other destinations. If you are uncertain about a particular route, contact its operator and describe the specific demands you need to assess. Ask what alternatives are available, and do not assume a guide can provide physical assistance or that a route can be left midway.
What shoes and clothing should you bring?
Follow the destination’s stated footwear rules first. Where permitted and appropriate to the surface, closed-toe hiking shoes with grippy soles may help provide traction, but no shoe guarantees safety. Requirements differ: Carlsbad Caverns recommends closed-toe shoes with good traction for some wet, steep routes, while Oregon Caves requires sturdy walking shoes and prohibits open-toed shoes. Check the official guidance for your own tour before choosing footwear.

For an enclosed route, check the posted temperature and clothing advice rather than assuming it will feel like the weather outside. Oregon Caves, for example, is described by the National Park Service as a consistent 44°F (7°C). Bring only equipment the site allows; restrictions can apply to bags and other items, especially on narrow routes.
How to move safely during the visit
Use the site’s instructions and the guide’s directions as the authority for that route. National Park Service guidance for Mammoth Cave advises visitors to watch their footing on uneven, sometimes wet trails, use handrails, watch for low ceilings, stay on marked routes and remain with the tour group. Carlsbad Caverns advises visitors who are unsure about tour requirements to ask a ranger for an explanation.

Respect archaeological and cultural resources
Follow all site boundaries and handling rules, including in places that appear abandoned or unmarked. National Park Service guidance says not to dig, remove artifacts, or touch pictographs and petroglyphs. Report suspected disturbance or harmful activity to a ranger. The agency’s Guidelines for Visiting Archeological Places put the principle plainly: “Act respectfully to places that are sacred or culturally important.”
Some sites limit access or the sharing of location details to protect vulnerable cultural resources. Do not enter closed, unstaffed or restricted spaces, even if an opening or informal path is visible.

Ask about shorter routes and access options
Access options are site-specific, so ask what is actually available for your intended date and which parts of the experience each option includes. Possible arrangements at some destinations include a shorter route, a partial tour, a visit to accessible surface areas or an interpretive exhibit. Confirm whether an option requires advance booking and whether it avoids the stairs or confined section that concerns you.
