As of October 13, 2026, Squadron 42 is not available to buy or download on Steam. Steam lists a planned release window of Q2 2027, but no price or purchase option. You can wishlist the game, then check the live Steam listing and Roberts Space Industries’ account and download information again before paying.
That makes this a readiness question rather than a normal game-shopping comparison. There is no checkout price, edition list, review history, final launch day, or confirmed Steam-to-RSI entitlement policy to assess yet. The useful steps now are to understand what the game is, compare your PC with the stricter current Steam specification, and avoid paying twice for an entitlement that may or may not transfer between stores.

Is Squadron 42 available to buy on Steam?
No. The Steam listing, checked October 13, 2026, says the game is not yet available. It offers a wishlist notification, but does not show a price or a way to purchase or download the game. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) likewise says Squadron 42 remains in development and cannot yet be downloaded in its download guidance, updated February 4, 2026.
That means there is no current Steam edition, price, checkout process, or playable Steam build to evaluate. Treat old pledge prices, unofficial price estimates, and assumptions about editions as unconfirmed—not as the current Steam offer. The Steam page is the place to check for a price and purchase option when one is posted.

A wishlist is not a preorder. It does not reserve a copy, lock in a price, guarantee access to a beta, or establish which account receives an entitlement. It simply lets Steam notify you when the store page changes according to Steam’s current notification behavior. Open the page directly before paying rather than relying only on an old notification or a third-party listing.
What does Q2 2027 mean?
Steam currently gives Q2 2027 as the planned release window; it does not give a specific day. A quarter is a target window, not a guaranteed launch date. PC Gamer reported on October 10, 2026, that the Steam page had appeared and that director Chris Roberts had announced in August that the game was delayed out of 2026. That report provides context for the listing, while Steam remains the direct source for its current planned window.
You can check the Steam page for changes and use its wishlist notification if you want to hear when the listing changes. The date and availability can change, so do not plan a purchase around a launch day that Steam has not specified. A Q2 window also does not tell you whether access will begin at the start or end of that quarter, so avoid booking time, hardware purchases, or other commitments around a particular week.
When a price and date eventually appear, check whether the page still says “planned” or has changed to a specific release date. Also look for the purchase button, edition names, regional pricing, refund terms, and any separate account requirement. None of those commercial details is established by the current listing.
What kind of game is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is a single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe, not the Star Citizen online game. Steam describes a cinematic space adventure combining ship combat, on-foot combat, exploration, and a story involving a crew. Cloud Imperium Games also describes it as a story-driven single-player game in its press information.
This distinction matters when deciding what you are waiting to buy: the Steam listing identifies Squadron 42 as single-player. Do not assume that a Steam purchase would include Star Citizen, a ship, or other pledge items; the sources available do not establish that. Likewise, do not treat Star Citizen package descriptions as a description of a future Steam bundle.
“Single-player” describes the listed mode, but it does not answer every technical question. The page also lists broadband internet and requires a Roberts Space Industries account, so buyers should not infer that the game is necessarily an entirely offline product. The listing does not explain when an internet connection is required, how account authentication works, or whether campaign progress can be used without a connection. Those details should be checked in the final store description and launch instructions.

The announced feature mix is broader than a space-flight-only game. Ship combat, walking sections, exploration, and a narrative campaign each create different expectations for controls and hardware. Someone buying specifically for a cockpit experience should verify controller support and any final control options; someone who wants a story campaign should focus on the single-player description rather than assuming access to Star Citizen’s persistent online features.
What does Steam list, and what is not settled?
The current Steam page identifies Cloud Imperium Games Ltd and Cloud Imperium Games Texas LLC as developers, and Roberts Space Industries entities as publishers. It lists the game as single-player and displays Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, HDR, Family Sharing, full controller support, and a required Roberts Space Industries account with Steam linking support. Steam Deck compatibility is marked unknown, and the listing has no user reviews at this stage.
Those are listing details, not proof of how every feature will work in the final released build. In particular, the listing’s account requirement and linking support do not explain how an existing RSI pledge would translate into Steam ownership, or whether a Steam purchase would create an RSI pledge.
Steam Achievements indicate that the store page is prepared to support that Steam feature, but they do not reveal the number of achievements or whether the final set is complete. Steam Cloud indicates that cloud-save support is listed, but the page does not state retention limits, synchronization behavior, or whether every setting will be stored. HDR is a listed display feature, not a promise that every monitor or graphics configuration will produce the same image.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Family Sharing is displayed on the page, yet its practical availability can depend on Steam’s account rules and the way the required RSI account is connected. Full controller support is useful for buyers who do not want keyboard-and-mouse controls, but the listing does not identify supported models, button layouts, or whether some ship and on-foot actions require a keyboard. Steam Deck status being unknown means you should not buy on the assumption that it will be verified or optimized for Valve’s handheld.
The absence of user reviews is expected for an unreleased listing. It means there is no launch-performance evidence, community compatibility report, or user consensus to substitute for the published minimum requirements. Early videos, screenshots, and old pledge pages should not be treated as a final technical review.
Languages listed
Steam lists ten languages. English is marked for interface, full audio, and subtitles. French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Latin America) are listed for interface and subtitles; no full-audio mark is shown for those languages. Language support can change, so check the live Steam language table if a particular audio or subtitle language is important to you.

The table separates interface, audio, and subtitle support. A language shown for the interface is not automatically a language with dubbed dialogue, and a subtitle listing does not promise that every cinematic, menu, or accessibility element will be identical to English. If you need a particular combination, capture the current table at checkout and check it again after release.

For a Steam buyer, Steam’s own minimum specification is the most directly relevant listing to use for now. It requires Windows 11, 16 GB RAM, 8 GB of graphics memory, and 150 GB of available storage, along with a 64-bit processor and operating system, broadband internet, DirectX 12, and a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card. The listed minimum CPU is a quad-core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge or later, or AMD Bulldozer or later. Steam gives no detailed recommended specification beyond requiring a 64-bit processor and operating system.
| Specification | Steam listing, checked October 13, 2026 | RSI general CIG guidance, updated December 17, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Quad-core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge or later, or AMD Bulldozer or later; 64-bit processor and OS | Quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2, and FMA3 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB or more RAM |
| Graphics | DirectX 11.1-compatible card with 8 GB VRAM; DirectX 12 | DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB graphics memory |
| Storage | 150 GB available storage | 150+ GB SSD |
| Other listed details | Broadband internet; no detailed recommended requirements stated | Linux and macOS not currently supported |
The Steam values come from the Squadron 42 listing; the other column comes from RSI’s broader game and launcher requirements page, which says its minimums apply to CIG games including Squadron 42. The two sources do not agree on Windows support, graphics memory, or how storage is specified. For someone considering a Steam copy, do not use RSI’s older 4 GB graphics-memory figure to conclude that a PC meets Steam’s currently listed minimum.
The most consequential difference is graphics memory: Steam currently lists 8 GB of VRAM, while the older RSI page lists 4 GB. RAM and VRAM are separate resources, so a computer with 16 GB of system memory can still fall short if its graphics card has less than the Steam-listed 8 GB. Check the graphics card’s dedicated memory, not just the amount of system RAM or the model’s general age.
Storage is also presented differently. Steam says 150 GB available storage; RSI says 150+ GB SSD and recommends extra room for the launcher and pagefile. A drive with exactly 150 GB free could be tight once the operating system, launcher, updates, and temporary files are considered. RSI’s extra-space advice is guidance rather than a confirmed final Steam number, but leaving headroom is safer than filling a drive to its stated minimum.
How to check your PC before release
- Check the current Steam minimum first. Compare your system with the Steam page’s Windows 11, processor, 16 GB RAM, 8 GB VRAM, DirectX, internet, and storage entries. Requirements may be revised before release.
- Verify the operating system edition. Steam names Windows 11, while RSI’s general page still includes Windows 10 64-bit. If your computer runs Windows 10, do not assume the broader RSI wording overrides the Steam listing. Recheck the Steam page and any final launch documentation.
- Check the graphics card’s dedicated memory and API support. The Steam minimum combines 8 GB VRAM with DirectX 11.1 compatibility and DirectX 12. A card can satisfy one of those conditions and fail another, so compare the complete specification rather than relying on a brand name alone.
- Check available drive space and drive type. Steam currently lists 150 GB available storage. RSI’s broader guidance calls for a 150+ GB SSD and recommends an NTFS-formatted drive, with additional space for the launcher and pagefile. Those launcher and file-system notes are RSI guidance, not confirmed final Steam installation requirements.
- Check the processor feature requirements if using RSI guidance. RSI’s page mentions AVX, AVX2, and FMA3 in addition to a quad-core CPU. Steam’s listing uses Intel and AMD generation examples instead. Because the descriptions differ, verify your CPU against the final Steam or CIG documentation instead of assuming that any four-core processor qualifies.
- Recheck close to launch. Compare your hardware against the then-current Steam minimum and any published recommended specification before buying. The current listing does not provide detailed recommended requirements, and the mismatch with RSI’s general page makes an early compatibility promise unreliable.
RSI’s general requirements article also specifies network ports as part of its CIG guidance. Those details may be relevant to RSI’s launcher or other CIG games, but they are not established as final requirements for installing and playing the Steam release. Follow the instructions attached to the actual release rather than changing router settings in advance.
Linux and macOS are listed as unsupported in RSI’s general guidance. Steam’s current page names Windows 11, so users on Linux, macOS, or an older Windows installation should wait for explicit platform information instead of inferring compatibility from the presence of a Steam page. Steam Deck being marked unknown is a separate issue from desktop Linux support.

What happens if you already own a Squadron 42 pledge?
RSI’s download article says that after development is complete, testing is done, and the game is released, RSI accounts that own a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play it. RSI’s April 16, 2026 starter checklist also says Squadron 42 is still in development and mentions a standalone Squadron 42 pledge, while noting that other packages generally include a ship, the game, and additional items.
That does not answer the Steam-store question. The available official information does not say whether a qualifying pledge owner will receive a Steam key, can choose Steam instead of the RSI launcher, or will have an existing entitlement linked automatically. Nor does it say whether buying on Steam creates an RSI pledge. If you already own a pledge, wait for an explicit policy from CIG or RSI before buying again on the assumption that stores share entitlements. If you do not own one, do not assume a pledge is required for a future Steam purchase.
Keep a record of the RSI account email and pledge description you use. Do not transfer an account, redeem an unverified key, or buy a second copy from an unofficial seller merely because a listing claims to convert a pledge into Steam access. The official pages reviewed do not establish any such conversion process. When CIG publishes one, read whether it is automatic, optional, limited by date, or tied to a specific account.
Price, editions, and what you can compare
There are no purchasable editions to compare on the reviewed Steam page. No current Steam price is displayed, and no official standard, deluxe, collector’s, early-access, or bundle structure is established by the listed sources. A historical pledge amount is not a current Steam price, and a rumor about a future package is not evidence of included content.
Once purchase options appear, compare four things: the total regional price, exactly what each edition includes, which account receives ownership, and the refund or release terms shown at checkout. Check whether a package is the single-player game only or includes unrelated Star Citizen items. Also check whether separate launcher installation, account linking, or a required third-party account is stated. Until those fields are published, there is no honest edition recommendation.
The current listing supports a digital PC purchase only after release. There is no confirmed physical edition, printed guide, branded accessory, or other product that needs to be added to this decision. Buying a large SSD or controller solely because of the unreleased page would be premature; first verify the final requirements and your existing hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical checklist before paying
- Confirm that purchase is actually open. The listing reviewed on October 13, 2026 offers a wishlist option, not a purchase.
- Read the release window as provisional. Steam shows Q2 2027, with no day specified.
- Wait for the displayed Steam price and terms. No current Steam price is shown, and old or unofficial figures are not a substitute.
- Compare the final system requirements with your PC. Pay particular attention to Windows version, 8 GB VRAM on Steam’s current minimum, and 150 GB available storage.
- Resolve account and entitlement details if you have an RSI pledge. Account linking is listed, but store-to-store ownership rules are not explained in the sources currently available.
- Check details you depend on directly on the live listing. Confirm language availability, controller support, Steam Deck status, and any purchase-specific terms at the time you are ready to buy.
- Use an official checkout only. Do not treat third-party keys, old pledge screenshots, or social-media claims as proof of Steam ownership.
- Leave installation headroom. The listed 150 GB is available storage, while RSI’s guidance mentions a 150+ GB SSD and extra space for launcher and pagefile.
- Save the account you intend to use. Because a Roberts Space Industries account is required, confirm that the Steam account and RSI account you link are the ones you want to keep together.
There are no purchasable editions to compare yet. Once Steam or RSI publishes actual purchase options, compare the price, included content, account handling, and final PC requirements rather than inferring a bundle from the current listing or pledge descriptions.

Sources and date of the listing
Steam listing and its current store fields were checked October 13, 2026: Squadron 42 on Steam. RSI’s download status was updated February 4, 2026; its general game and launcher requirements were updated December 17, 2025; and its starter checklist was updated April 16, 2026. The dated release context is from PC Gamer’s October 10, 2026 report. These pages may change, so verify the live Steam listing and RSI guidance before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy Squadron 42 on Steam today?
No. The Steam page checked October 13, 2026 says it is not yet available, shows no price or purchase button, and offers a wishlist option. RSI also says it cannot yet be downloaded.
Is Q2 2027 a confirmed release date?
No. Q2 2027 is Steam’s current planned release window, not a specific day or guarantee. Check the live listing for changes.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Squadron 42 include Star Citizen?
The listing describes Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign. The pages reviewed do not establish that a future Steam purchase includes Star Citizen, ships, or other pledge items.
Will an existing RSI pledge give me a Steam key?
That is not explained. RSI says qualifying pledge owners will be able to download and play after release, while Steam supports linking an RSI account, but neither page confirms Steam-key conversion or automatic cross-store entitlement.
What are the current minimum PC requirements?
Steam lists Windows 11, a 64-bit system, a quad-core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge-or-later or AMD Bulldozer-or-later CPU, 16 GB RAM, 8 GB VRAM, DirectX 12 with a DirectX 11.1-compatible card, broadband internet, and 150 GB storage. Recheck before launch.
Why do Steam and RSI list different graphics requirements?
Steam currently lists 8 GB of graphics memory, while RSI’s broader December 2025 guidance lists 4 GB. The Steam page is the more directly relevant source for a Steam buyer, and the discrepancy means you should verify final requirements close to release.

Will it run on Steam Deck, Linux, or macOS?
Steam Deck compatibility is marked unknown. RSI’s general guidance says Linux and macOS are not currently supported. Do not assume compatibility until the final platform information is published.
Are there reviews or a final price yet?
No. The listing has no user reviews and no current price. Do not use old pledge prices or unofficial estimates as the Steam price.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Squadron 42 is a planned single-player Steam release, not a game you can currently buy or download. Wishlist the page, treat Q2 2027 as provisional, and wait for an official price and edition list. Before paying, verify the final Windows and hardware requirements—especially Steam’s current 8 GB VRAM and 150 GB storage figures—and confirm how a Roberts Space Industries account or existing pledge connects to Steam.
