Then compare cookware compatibility, cooking response, ventilation, fit, and installation—not just the fuel label or sticker price. No type is best for every kitchen or cook.
Check your kitchen’s connections first
A range has to match the services available where it will be installed. Gas ranges use natural gas or propane; electric and induction ranges need a 240-volt electric line. Consumer Reports’ range buying guide outlines these requirements.

If the connection you need is not already in place, installation work may change the cost and feasibility of the purchase. Switching from gas to electric or induction may require suitable wiring and circuit capacity. Have a qualified professional assess the home’s electrical service and the exact range’s installation requirements before ordering; the work depends on the existing panel, wiring, and installation scope.
How the three range types differ
| Type | How it cooks | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gas | Burns natural gas or propane. The visible flame gives immediate visual feedback as you adjust the burner. | Confirm fuel service, model compatibility, and a ventilation plan. |
| Radiant electric | Heats elements beneath a glass surface. The surface holds residual heat after you change the setting. | Confirm a 240-volt connection and consider whether slower temperature changes and residual heat suit your cooking. |
| Induction | Uses electricity to create a magnetic field that heats compatible cookware directly. The cooktop is glass, but the pan—not the surface—is heated by the field. | Confirm a 240-volt connection and check that your pans work with induction. |
What induction cookware and cooking feel like
Induction works with cookware whose base responds to a magnet. Test a pan by holding a magnet to its underside: if it sticks, the pan is likely compatible. Many stainless-steel and cast-iron pans work, but cookware varies, so test the pieces you actually use. ENERGY STAR explains the induction mechanism and cookware check in its electric cooking products information.

The 30 inch induction stove is made of high-quality glass, you can touch the controls without any pressure. No afraid of scratches.
Induction can change heat quickly because it heats the cookware directly. Radiant electric glass retains heat after an adjustment, so the cooking surface does not cool immediately when you lower the setting. Gas offers the visual feedback of a flame. Those differences affect everyday use, but results and controls vary by model.
Efficiency figures are comparisons, not a promise of lower bills or a particular cooking time in your kitchen. ENERGY STAR says about 85% of heating energy is transferred to cookware with induction, compared with about a third for gas cooking products; its page gives a specification effective date of September 25, 2023. The U.S. Department of Energy says induction is up to three times more efficient than gas stoves and up to 10% more efficient than conventional smooth-top electric ranges. DOE also reports that Consumer Reports found induction boiled water 20–40% faster than tested gas and traditional electric cooktops. These figures describe attributed comparisons, not guaranteed savings or timing for every range. See DOE’s induction stove and cooktop guidance.

Include ventilation in a gas-range decision
Burning gas for cooking is associated with pollutants including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde, according to the Department of Energy. Consumer Reports advises using a range hood and opening windows and doors when cooking with gas. Ventilation is relevant to the decision, but this guidance does not mean that any hood is suitable for every kitchen or that ventilation removes all emissions.

Compare complete models and installed fit
Fuel type alone does not tell you how well a particular range cooks. Consumer Reports’ 2026 range roundup, updated in September 2026, describes laboratory testing across range types. Its guidance emphasizes that performance varies by model and that price alone does not establish performance.

Account for the full cost, not just the range price
Consumer Reports says induction ranges typically cost more than conventional electric models. A gas-to-electric or gas-to-induction change can also involve electrical work, with cost determined by local labor and the condition and capacity of the home’s existing service. There is no single installation price that applies to every kitchen.
Rebates and incentives vary by location and can change. Check current information from official federal, state, or utility programs for your address and the exact appliance before including an incentive in your budget.
