rpi is a Rust reimplementation of the Pi coding agent, available as both a terminal CLI and an embeddable agent runtime. Its author reports substantially faster startup and lower memory use than the TypeScript Pi agent in a specific Windows 11 comparison—but those figures are project benchmarks, not independently verified results or a measure of how quickly an AI model responds.

What is rpi?

rpi is the name of the Rust project in the pi-rust repository. The project describes it as a library-first coding-agent runtime as well as a terminal application. That means it is intended not only for people who want to run an agent from a command line, but also for developers who want to embed the runtime in a Rust application or extend it with Rust plugins.

The repository describes nine composable crates, provider adapters, tools, persistent sessions, and a stable plugin ABI. Its CLI examples cover interactive use, one-shot prompts, and JSON output. Sessions are stored as JSONL; the README says a session can resume after a crash from its last committed frame.

The project README sums up its intended audience as people who “want to own the loop.” That is the project’s own description of its focus, rather than an independent assessment.

How much faster and smaller does the project report?

The figures below are reported by the project author and repeated in the README. They are rounded in the original headline: the reported comparison is 10.7× for cold start and 7.6× for ready-state memory, while the --version comparison is 9.7×. These are not universal performance guarantees.

Measurement rpi Pi Reported comparison
--version wall time 17.5 ms 169.5 ms rpi is 9.7× faster
Cold start 17.7 ms 189.5 ms rpi is 10.7× faster
Ready-state RSS 12.0 MiB 91.5 MiB rpi uses 7.6× less memory
Install footprint 21.8 MiB Approximately 385 MiB for Pi plus approximately 91 MiB for Node Roughly 18–22× smaller, as reported by the project

The author also reports a 21.8 MiB standalone rpi release binary, an approximately 17 ms median --version time, and 12.0 MiB ready-state RSS. These are project-reported measurements from 2026, not independent test results.

What the benchmark does—and does not—show

The README says the comparison used release builds on Windows 11 (x86_64) with rustc 1.97.1. It says both benchmark scripts rebuild and remeasure, and that Pi was tested offline on the same machine with isolated configuration directories. Cold start is defined as process launch through the agent answering its first command; teardown and LLM work are excluded.

That scope matters. The measurements compare startup, ready-state resident memory, and installation footprint under the project’s stated setup. The README explicitly does not measure LLM latency, tool-loop throughput, long sessions, or terminal UI frame cost. A smaller runtime can reduce local resource use, but it does not by itself establish that an agent will produce answers sooner, handle more work, or behave better during extended coding tasks.

RasTech Raspberry Pi 5 8GB Kit with Active Cooler and Pi5 Case
  • 【What you Get】You will get 1*Pi 5 8GB Single Board,1*RasTech Case,1*Active Cooler,1*Screwdriver,1*Installation instructions,12-month free warranty, lifetime service, 24-hour prompt and friendly response.
  • 【More Connectors】There are two USB 3.0 ports(5Gbps simultaneously) and two USB 2.0 ports, which triple total bandwidth ,support any combination of up to two cameras or displays. Peak SD card performance is doubled through support for the SDR104 high-speed mode. It provides a smooth desktop experience for you. Offer Gigabit Ethernet and a PCIe interface, along with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0/BLE wireless capability. The RasTech Pi 5 Kit use the new 27W 5.1V 5A USB-C power connector.
  • 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
  • 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
  • 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

The comparison is maintained by the rpi project. Readers evaluating it against Pi or another coding agent should match the operating system, build type, startup definition, memory measurement point, and workload—and distinguish a command-line application from an embeddable library. The published numbers alone do not settle those broader comparisons.

How to install and run it

In the repository snapshot accessed October 7, 2026, the README documents prebuilt binaries, Cargo installation, Homebrew for macOS Apple silicon and Linux, and Scoop for Windows. Cargo installation requires Rust 1.78 or newer. The README lists Linux, macOS, and Windows support, but says prebuilt binaries are not published for Intel Macs.

What is needed to use a live model?

The project documents Anthropic and OpenAI-compatible provider configuration. Installing the local binary or package is separate from obtaining access to a model provider: the README does not say that an API plan is included. A live-model workflow therefore requires the relevant provider access and configuration in addition to installing rpi. The project materials also describe terminal and embedded use, but they do not establish that every provider or feature works identically across those modes.

Who might find rpi useful?

  • Rust developers who want an agent runtime they can embed or extend with Rust plugins.
  • CLI users who want to try a terminal coding agent and value the project’s reported lower startup time and memory footprint.
  • Readers assessing the benchmark who can reproduce the author’s Windows setup and compare equivalent builds and workloads.

The evidence is less informative for someone choosing an agent primarily on model quality, long-session reliability, tool throughput, or terminal rendering performance: the published benchmark does not test those criteria.
