First, check whether security support has actually ended for your exact phone model. If it has, stop using the device for banking, password management, work accounts, or confidential communications. Keep it only for low-sensitivity or offline tasks if that still suits your needs; otherwise, back it up, reset it carefully, and trade it in, donate it, or recycle it.
Confirm that updates have ended for your exact phone
Not seeing a new update does not prove that a phone has reached its final support date. Update schedules and end dates can vary by manufacturer, model, and carrier.

- Record the device details. Note the manufacturer, exact model or variant, Android version, and security patch level shown in Settings. The wording and location of these fields vary by phone.
- Check the maker’s official support information. Look for a security-update policy or support page that covers your exact model. Pixel owners can consult Google’s Pixel update schedule; Google directs owners of other Android phones to their manufacturer or carrier for update information.
- Account for carrier timing. A carrier version may receive releases on a different schedule. If the manufacturer’s policy is unclear, ask the carrier or manufacturer whether the model remains supported.
The Android Enterprise Recommended requirements provide an example of a program that requires manufacturers to publish security-maintenance end dates and update frequency. They are not a universal support promise for every Android handset: Android Enterprise Recommended requirements.

What the end of security updates means
An unsupported phone does not automatically become compromised, but it no longer receives the manufacturer’s fixes for newly addressed security flaws. Android explains that devices without security patches remain exposed to known vulnerabilities, and that older software can also lose app compatibility or functionality: Why Android Updates Matter.
There is no single risk score that applies to every owner. The practical question is what you do on the phone and what accounts or data it can reach. A phone used for sensitive accounts presents a more consequential exposure than one kept for a limited, low-sensitivity purpose.

Choose a role based on what you use the phone for

Do not treat an offline role or a custom operating system as an equivalent to continued official security support. Each changes the practical trade-offs, but neither establishes that the device is free of vulnerabilities.
Prepare the phone before selling, donating, or trading it in
- Back up what you want to keep. Check that photos, contacts, messages, and other important data are saved where you expect before erasing the device.
- Verify access credentials. Make sure you know the Google account and screen-lock credentials associated with the phone, and follow the maker’s instructions for unlinking accounts and preparing that model for transfer.
- Handle removable storage separately. Remove any SD card you plan to keep. Android warns that a remote erase may not delete data on an SD card.
- Factory-reset the phone using the maker’s instructions. Android’s general reset guide says a factory reset removes registered accounts, installed apps, and stored device data. A reset is not a promise of forensic-grade sanitization; consult the exact device instructions if you need more specific assurance. See Android’s factory-reset guide.
Choose a responsible handoff or recycling route
For a working phone, check whether the manufacturer, carrier, retailer, or a local charity accepts it for trade-in or reuse. Google describes trade-in and secondhand-device pathways, but eligibility depends on the device and program terms: Google’s device circularity information.

If reuse is not suitable, look for an electronics recycling program in your area rather than putting the phone in household rubbish. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends reuse-oriented routes such as donation and trade-in, as well as recycling: EPA guidance on a cell phone’s end of life. Options differ by location. If the battery is swollen or the phone is damaged, ask the manufacturer or local electronics or hazardous-waste program how to handle it; do not dismantle or mail it based on generic advice.

- Support: Have you confirmed the end date for the exact model and carrier version?
- Sensitivity: Does the phone have access to financial, work, password, or confidential accounts?
- Condition: Is it functional enough to keep, transfer, or trade in?
- Alternative software: Is there a maintained build for this precise model, and can you manage installation and upkeep?
- Local route: Is trade-in, donation, or recycling available for this device where you live?
If support has ended and the phone is tied to sensitive accounts, retire it from those tasks. A working handset may still have a limited second life, but one that no longer serves a useful role is better prepared for reuse or recycled through an appropriate program.
