When your stock portfolio loses value, pause before making a major change. First verify what changed, identify which holdings or asset categories drove the decline, and check whether your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and cash needs still fit your investment plan. A loss by itself is not a personalized signal to sell—or to buy more.
This U.S.-focused guide offers a way to assess your next step, not a diagnosis of your portfolio or individualized financial, legal, or tax advice. The right decision depends on details such as what you own, which account holds it, when you need the money, and your tax situation.

Start by checking what the loss actually measures
A lower balance can be unsettling, but the headline number alone does not explain what happened or what to do. Before reacting, compare like with like: the same account or set of accounts, the same dates, and a consistent treatment of contributions and withdrawals. A balance can change because investments moved, because money entered or left the account, or because of both.
Make a simple account snapshot
- Record the current value of the accounts you are assessing and the date of the snapshot.
- Choose a comparison date that matches the question you are trying to answer, such as whether the portfolio has changed since your last review.
- Check account statements and transaction history for contributions, withdrawals, transfers, or other activity during that period.
- Compare the holdings and their current values, rather than treating the total balance as a complete explanation.
This is a fact-finding step, not a performance calculation. If you need a formal return measure, make sure the method accounts consistently for cash flows and the period being measured. Do not assume that a balance decline equals the investment return, or that every account has moved in the same way.

Find out what fell and where the risk is concentrated
Next, look beneath the portfolio total. A broad decline across several kinds of investments is different from a sharp fall in one holding, sector, or narrowly focused fund. The distinction matters because diversification is about spreading exposure both among asset categories and within them—not simply owning many ticker symbols.
Review holdings at more than one level
- Largest holdings: Identify whether a small number of positions account for a large share of the portfolio.
- Asset categories: Compare the stock portion with other categories in the plan, if any, and see whether the overall mix has drifted from its intended allocation.
- Sectors and themes: Check whether different holdings depend on similar industries or economic conditions.
- Fund overlap: Funds with different names may own many of the same companies. Counting funds does not, by itself, establish that the portfolio is broadly diversified.
The SEC’s Investor.gov guide to asset allocation and diversification explains that diversification can reduce the impact of a weak investment or category, but cannot eliminate investment risk or guarantee a recovery. If one individual company is central to the decline, consult current company filings and reliable information about the business before deciding whether the move is ordinary market volatility or something that changes your view of the investment. A price drop alone does not establish either conclusion.
Recheck the goal, deadline, and ability to bear risk
An allocation is not suitable or unsuitable in isolation: it has to be judged against the goal it is meant to serve. The SEC says there is no single asset-allocation model for every financial goal. Ask whether the purpose, date, or importance of the goal has changed since you set the plan.

Ask these questions before changing the mix
- When will you need to use this money, and can that date move?
- Has your income, debt, emergency savings, or other cash need changed?
- Could you tolerate a further decline without having to sell at an inconvenient time?
- Would a loss threaten an essential goal, or is the money intended for a more distant goal?
- Has your willingness to accept fluctuations changed, or has your financial ability to withstand them changed?
Willingness and ability are not the same. You may feel comfortable with volatility but still need the money soon; conversely, you may have a long time horizon but find the current risk level emotionally difficult to stick with. The SEC’s Investor.gov risk-tolerance guidance warns that a risky investment may be a poor fit for a short-term goal of five years or less, because the money may have to be sold at a loss when it is needed.
Choose a next step based on the situation
There is no universal answer to “Should I sell my stocks when the market is down?” or “Should I buy more when stocks fall?” A market decline alone does not tell you whether either action fits your circumstances. Use the questions below to organize the decision—not as a trade instruction.
| What you find | What to examine next | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| The balance changed, but you have not checked deposits, withdrawals, or the comparison period. | Confirm the account values, dates, and transactions. | Do not base a major change on a number you have not reconciled. |
| A holding or sector accounts for much of the decline. | Review concentration, fund overlap, and current information about any individual company involved. | Ask whether the exposure still fits the plan and your ability to bear its risk. |
| The portfolio mix differs from the allocation you intended. | Check whether the drift is material to your plan and compare possible adjustment methods. | Consider rebalancing only if restoring the target allocation is still appropriate, after assessing fees and taxes. |
| Your goal is nearer, or your income or cash needs have changed. | Revisit the amount and timing of money you may need, alongside your overall allocation. | A plan that once fit may need review when personal circumstances change. |
| You can cover near-term needs without selling investments. | Confirm that accessible savings are adequate for your circumstances. | This may give you more room to follow a considered plan instead of selling under pressure. |
If you cannot tell whether your allocation still fits, or the stakes are significant, consider discussing your specific circumstances with a qualified financial professional. Bring the holdings, account types, goal dates, cash needs, and any planned transactions; those details determine what a useful review can address.

Understand what rebalancing does—and does not do
Rebalancing means bringing a portfolio back toward a chosen allocation. It is a maintenance decision, not a prediction that an asset that fell will rebound or that a recent winner will keep rising. If the allocation was chosen for a goal and still fits that goal, a decline may cause the portfolio to drift away from its targets; whether to correct that drift depends on the plan and the costs of acting.

- Sell an overweight asset category and use the proceeds to bring an underweight category closer to its intended share.
- Direct new contributions toward underweight categories, if you are adding money and that approach fits the plan.
- Change future contribution allocations so new investments go toward the categories that need to catch up.
These methods can have different fee and tax consequences. Review the account type, transaction charges, and potential tax effects before selecting a method. The SEC’s Investor.gov material on rebalancing discusses those considerations; its historical rebalancing article is explicitly marked as no longer updated, so treat it as background rather than a statement of current policy.
Protect near-term cash needs from market timing pressure
If an unexpected bill would force you to sell investments, the timing of the sale may be determined by the emergency rather than by your plan. Accessible savings can help reduce that pressure. A joint World Investor Week bulletin dated October 5, 2026, from the SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance, CFTC Office of Customer Education and Outreach, FINRA, NASAA, NFA, and SIPC gives three to six months of living expenses as one example savings goal. It is an example, not a universal requirement; an appropriate reserve depends on your circumstances.

The same bulletin says patient, periodic investing and approaches such as dollar-cost averaging can help mitigate volatility and short-term swings in portfolio performance. That is not a promise of profit, a guarantee against loss, or a reason to invest money needed for near-term expenses. The practical question is whether your cash reserve and investment plan give you a realistic ability to stay with your intended approach.

A sale can have tax consequences, including when you sell at a loss. The IRS explains that a capital gain or loss generally results from the difference between adjusted basis and sale proceeds. Most capital transactions are reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D. Whether a particular sale produces a tax benefit depends on the facts and applicable tax rules; do not assume a loss will create a specific deduction or offset.
Before selling for tax reasons, check the rules for the tax year in which the transaction occurs or consult a tax professional. IRS Topic No. 409 includes year-specific 2025 figures; those amounts should not be carried forward as 2026 limits. Tax treatment can depend on details not visible in a portfolio balance, including basis, transaction history, and account type.

Be cautious about unexpected investment messages
Market stress can make urgent pitches or account warnings feel more credible. The October 5, 2026 joint World Investor Week bulletin also warns about investment impersonation and scams, including scams made more convincing with AI. Verify an unexpected contact through an official channel you locate independently, not through the phone number, link, or contact information in the message. Never share account access details in response to an unsolicited message.
A practical order of operations
- Verify the numbers: Confirm the accounts, dates, and cash flows behind the decline.
- Locate the source: Identify the holdings, categories, or concentrations responsible for the change.
- Revisit your plan: Check the goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, and ability to meet near-term needs.
- Compare possible actions: Consider maintaining the plan, adjusting the allocation, or using contributions to rebalance—but only in light of the goal and portfolio details.
- Check the consequences: Account for transaction fees, tax effects, and whether you have accessible savings before placing an order.
- Use reliable information: Review current company filings when an individual company is involved, and verify unsolicited investment contacts independently.
General SEC and multi-agency investor education, along with IRS tax guidance, can help frame these questions, but none can determine the right trade for an investor whose holdings and circumstances are unknown.
