If the test page prints cleanly, the problem is more likely to involve the computer, app, print queue, or connection. If it fails or has streaks or missing color, look at supplies, maintenance, or the printer itself. That distinction is a useful clue, not a guarantee; consult your model’s instructions before opening covers or cleaning internal parts.
Start with checks that apply to any printer
Before changing settings, check whether the printer itself is ready and whether the job is going to the right place.

- Confirm the printer is powered on and note any message, error code, or status light.
- Check the Wi-Fi connection or cable, and make sure the computer selected the intended printer.
- Confirm the file contains printable content and that the application is not sending a blank page.
- If the printer offers a test page from its control panel, print one. A successful, clean page points toward the computer, application, queue, or connection; a failed page or visible defects point more toward supplies, maintenance, or printer hardware. HP describes this as a diagnostic distinction, not a definitive test: HP’s blank-page troubleshooting guide.
Write down any error code before dismissing it. If the problem continues, the exact model and code will help you find the right manufacturer procedure.

An offline label or stalled job does not by itself prove the printer is broken. The cause may be a lost network or cable connection, the wrong selected printer, a queue problem, or a driver or operating-system issue.

Check the connection and selected printer
- For a network printer, verify that it is connected to the network and that the computer is using the expected network.
- For a cable-connected printer, check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends.
- Confirm the print dialog is sending the document to the intended printer rather than another device or a virtual printer.
Check the queue and Windows troubleshooting
On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Get Help printer troubleshooter. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guide also covers printer discovery, stuck jobs, spooler failures, offline errors, jams, print quality, drivers, and application-specific problems. Follow the steps for the symptom you have rather than assuming every offline message has the same cause: Microsoft’s Windows connection and printing guide.
If a job remains stuck, Microsoft documents a more involved Windows procedure that stops the print spooler, clears queued spool files, and restarts the service. Use Microsoft’s current instructions for that procedure instead of deleting files or changing services based on guesswork. Windows menu labels and steps may differ from macOS, mobile devices, and other operating systems.

If the printer reports a paper jam
Turn the printer off and unplug it before trying to clear a jam. The printer manual is the authority on which doors and parts you can safely access; do not force a panel or pull hard against resistance.

- Check the input tray and the access points identified in the model manual, which may include a rear door or the cartridge or toner area.
- Remove paper slowly and in the direction recommended by the manual. Look for small torn scraps as well as the main sheet.
- Inspect the rollers only as the manufacturer instructs. Reload paper with the guides aligned, using a supported size and type and matching the printer’s media settings.
- If the jam returns, or you cannot reach paper without forcing a mechanism, stop and consult the model’s support instructions.
Microsoft lists power isolation, paper-path checks, roller inspection, and correct reloading in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 jam guidance. The printer manual remains the source for model-specific access and handling: Microsoft’s paper-jam instructions. Supported paper can help rule out a media mismatch; it will not fix worn rollers, a faulty sensor, or another mechanical fault.

If pages are blank, faded, or streaked
Check simple causes before starting maintenance. Verify that the document is not empty, paper is loaded correctly, and the print settings match the paper. For a newly installed cartridge, check that any protective tape has been removed as directed. Check ink or toner status and print-quality settings.
Maintenance depends on printer technology and model. HP’s blank-page guide describes cleaning as an inkjet-specific step; do not assume the same procedure applies to a laser printer or another design. Avoid repeated deep-cleaning cycles or opening the printer unless the model’s manual calls for it. If a control-panel test page also shows defects, use the manufacturer’s prescribed supply and maintenance checks before treating the issue as a computer problem.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Use manufacturer support rather than continuing general checks when an error code persists, a hardware error returns after the documented reset, the printer makes unusual noises, or you see damage. Also stop if the model’s prescribed checks do not resolve the problem. Procedures differ by model, so identify the exact printer before removing covers, cleaning internal components, or buying replacement supplies.

Some error messages have specific service guidance. Brother says persistent “Print Unable XX” or “Cannot Print XX” errors can require service; in-warranty owners should contact Brother Support. Its guidance also notes that out-of-warranty repair and diagnostic costs may exceed the cost of replacing the machine. See Brother’s guidance for these error messages. For HP printers, the HP Support portal provides model lookup, driver downloads, warranty-status checks, and contact options.

How to weigh repair against replacement
There is no single repair-cost threshold that works for every printer, model, market, or usage level. Before deciding, check the warranty and get a written repair estimate. Compare the estimate with a replacement that meets your actual needs, considering:
- Whether the printer is covered by warranty.
- The repair estimate and whether the fault is recurring or affects a core component.
- Whether a replacement has the features you need, rather than merely a lower purchase price.
- Your expected print volume and the availability of compatible ink or toner.
These are decision factors, not a universal formula. Manufacturer service guidance and the written estimate are more useful than guessing at a repair threshold.
