Some battery drain after setting up a phone or installing an update can come from background work—but it is not safe to assume that is the cause. Start by checking battery usage and any device diagnostics. If they show an ongoing setup or update, give it time to finish while watching whether the drain improves; if they point to an app, weak signal, heat, or another issue, address that specific cause.
First, check what is using the battery
Look at battery usage before changing settings. This helps distinguish temporary setup work from a particular app, system activity, or connection problem.

On iPhone
Open Settings > Battery. Review any suggestions or Insights, the Daily Usage chart, and App and System Activity Usage. Menu details and features depend on the iOS version and iPhone model. Apple says the Daily Usage chart and Adaptive Power require iOS or iPadOS 26 or later; Adaptive Power is not available on every iPhone. Insights for ongoing setup or updates require iOS or iPadOS 18 or later.

On Pixel
On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. Also review Battery usage to see which apps or system activity account for the drain. Some troubleshooting steps require Android 14 or later. See Google Pixel Help’s battery-drain guidance for the available diagnostics and steps.
On other Android phones
Check your phone’s Battery or Battery usage settings; names and diagnostic options vary by manufacturer and software version. Google recommends consulting the device manufacturer’s support site because menus and battery behavior depend on the phone. Its general Android battery guidance includes steps that apply only to Android 13 and later.
Allow background work to finish, but watch the pattern
Setup or update activity can temporarily affect battery life, but the expected timing is not the same across platforms. Apple advises checking again after a few days when battery life falls after an update. Google says optimization on a Pixel after setting up a new device or factory reset may take a few weeks to take full effect. That Pixel guidance is not a settling-time rule for every phone.

Keep monitoring battery usage during that period. If drain is severe, does not improve, or diagnostics identify a clear cause, troubleshoot it rather than waiting indefinitely.
Work through the likely causes
Background activity, apps, and notifications
If one app accounts for unusually high usage, restrict its background activity or uninstall it if you no longer need it. On iPhone, check for Background Activity and frequent Notifications in battery usage. On Pixel, keep Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization on; these can reduce performance or delay notifications. Avoid force-stopping essential apps or system services, which Google warns can prevent the phone from working correctly.
Screen use and demanding tasks
High brightness, a long screen timeout, and sustained navigation, GPS, video streaming, hotspot use, camera use, or graphics-heavy games can increase consumption. When battery life is the priority, lower brightness, shorten screen timeout, and limit the most demanding tasks.

Weak mobile signal
On iPhone, “No Mobile Coverage” or “Low Signal” in battery usage can indicate that poor reception is contributing to drain. Apple recommends using a strong signal where possible and notes that Wi-Fi uses less power than mobile networks. If the phone regularly struggles to connect, compare its behavior on a reliable Wi-Fi connection or in an area with better coverage.

Heat
A hot phone can drain faster even while idle. Google warns that heat can also damage the battery. Move the phone out of direct sun or other hot surroundings and let it cool; do not treat ongoing heat as a normal setup symptom.

If battery usage does not reveal a temporary task or obvious app cause, restart the phone and check for Android, iOS, and app updates. Google recommends restarting and checking for updates when troubleshooting persistent Android battery problems.

A factory reset is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a short-lived post-setup dip. It removes apps and data, so back up important information before considering one, and follow the device maker’s instructions.
When to contact support or consider service
- iPhone: Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If the status shows “Service,” Apple says to consider replacing the battery. A temporary drop just after setup alone does not establish that the battery is defective.
- Pixel: Contact Google support if unusual drain continues after a few days, or if Pixel diagnostics point to a problem.
- Other Android phones: Contact the manufacturer or carrier if the drain remains unexplained after checking usage, restarting, and updating. Use the support guidance for your specific model.
The available official Samsung evidence here is an older Galaxy S9+ manual, which notes that simultaneous apps, network apps, or apps connected to another device can drain the battery quickly. It does not establish current Samsung post-setup behavior or a general settling period.
