If your internet bill feels too high, your connection keeps slowing down, or both, first separate the two problems: check what you are paying for, see which alternatives serve your address, and troubleshoot before changing plans. A higher-priced tier is not automatically the fix for slow service, and a low advertised price may not reflect your bill after a promotion ends or fees are added.
Start by finding out whether the problem is price, speed, or both
Write down the current monthly cost and the times or situations when service slows. For cost, look at recent bills and your plan’s Broadband Facts label. For speed, note whether the problem affects one device or several, whether it happens in one part of the home, and whether it is worse at particular times. Keeping these observations separate helps you avoid paying for a faster plan when the issue is in the home network—or switching providers without addressing a bill that has simply risen after a discount expired.

Check what your internet plan really costs
Use the plan’s Broadband Facts label alongside your recent bill. The label discloses the monthly price, introductory-rate details, additional charges, discounts or bundle conditions, typical download and upload speeds, data allowances, and contract-related information. It is a useful comparison starting point, not a promise that the base price equals your final bill. Confirm applicable taxes, fees, equipment charges, and discounts with the provider. What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Find the standard monthly price and the date any introductory rate ends.
- Identify recurring provider and equipment charges, as well as any one-time charges.
- Check the data allowance and what happens if you exceed it.
- Note discounts tied to autopay, bundles, or other conditions.
- Review contract length and any early-termination fee before switching.
Find alternatives available at your exact address
Search your service address on the FCC National Broadband Map. It shows providers, technologies such as fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless, and speeds reported as available at that location. The map is an availability tool—not a price comparison, affordability rating, or guarantee of the performance you will receive. Confirm current prices, plan terms, and installation availability directly with each provider. The FCC’s map help article was updated May 15, 2025.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Compare plans against the same household needs rather than the headline price alone. The FCC advises considering usage patterns, upload as well as download speed, and the relationship between speed, price, and service; it also cautions against paying for more speed than you need. FCC consumer guidance on choosing internet service
- Monthly cost after the introductory period, not just the advertised starting price.
- Typical download and upload speeds for the plan.
- Data limits and possible overage charges.
- Equipment costs, contract terms, and cancellation fees.
- Whether the provider can start service at your address and when.
Ask whether a lower tier would handle your household’s actual use and whether changing tiers later would involve a fee. A plan with a lower advertised price may cost more over time if its promotional rate expires or its fees and terms do not suit your needs.

Troubleshoot slow internet before changing plans
Slow service can originate in the home or with the provider. The FCC Consumer Task Force’s Broadband Made Simple: Tips for Getting the Speed You Need lists an old or slow router, an old or slow computer, peak-time web use, high-bandwidth applications or sites, and several household members online at once as possible factors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Compare devices. Check whether the slowdown affects one device or several. If only one device is affected, that observation can help narrow the problem.
- Compare locations. Try the usual device near the router, then in its normal location. A difference is a useful clue about the home Wi-Fi connection.
- Check timing and activity. Note whether service is slower at peak times or while high-bandwidth applications are in use. If practical, pause unusually heavy activity and see whether the connection changes.
- Consider household use. Notice whether several people are online at once when the slowdown occurs.
- Consider the equipment. An old or slow router may contribute to a problem, but that does not establish that it is the cause. A new router cannot fix every slowdown, including a provider-side problem.
These checks can help you describe the issue; they do not diagnose its cause by themselves. If the evidence points to home Wi-Fi equipment, a Wi-Fi router may be relevant. If service remains slow across devices or the checks do not help, contact the provider rather than assuming that a more expensive tier will solve it.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Contact your provider, then escalate unresolved problems
When you contact the provider, describe when the slowdown happens, which devices are affected, where you tested, and what you observed. Ask the provider to investigate and review whether your current plan fits your household. For a bill issue, identify the charge or rate change you are asking about.
If the provider does not resolve the issue, the FCC’s internet complaint form includes categories for billing, equipment, and speed. The FCC says consumers can file when its consumer guides do not address their issue. FCC internet complaint issue descriptions
