If your internet stops working during a storm, check safety and power first, then find out whether the failure is inside your home or on your provider’s network. A battery backup can keep your modem and router running, but it cannot restore internet service if the provider’s network is down.
What to do first
- Put safety ahead of troubleshooting. Stay away from downed power lines, flooded areas, and wet or visibly damaged equipment. Do not go outside in dangerous weather to inspect a cable. Southern California Edison advises staying at least 100 feet from a downed line and calling 911 from a safe place; follow your local utility and emergency instructions. (Southern California Edison outage tips)
- Check whether your home has power. If household electricity is out, an ordinary modem and router will stop unless they have backup power. Do not handle or move equipment that is wet or damaged.
- If your home has power, check your provider’s outage status. Use its outage map, app, or status channel on a charged phone. A storm can affect the provider’s neighborhood equipment or network even when your home’s electricity and Wi-Fi equipment are working.
- Wait for power and service to return before restarting equipment. Repeated reboots will not repair an outside network outage. Once power and provider service are restored, follow your ISP’s instructions if the connection still fails. Xfinity’s published manual method is to unplug the modem or router, wait five seconds, and reconnect it; other providers may give different directions. (Xfinity weather-event FAQs)
- Use an alternative only if its network is available. A phone hotspot needs working cellular coverage and an eligible plan. If you need access elsewhere, confirm that a family member, workplace, library, school, or community facility is open and reachable before traveling.
Why your Wi-Fi can work while the internet is down
Your home Wi-Fi is only the local wireless connection between devices and your router. To reach the internet, the modem and router also need a working connection to the provider’s network. Storm-related power cuts, flooding, or fallen trees can disrupt that network. A lit router or visible Wi-Fi network therefore does not prove that the provider’s upstream service is available.

Xfinity says both power at the home and power in the local Xfinity network must be restored before restoration work can proceed. In severely storm-affected areas, it says it may not be able to assess damage or estimate restoration until the storm has passed, and interruptions can occur after an initial restoration while crews continue work. Those are Xfinity’s statements about its service, not a general restoration timetable. Check your own provider’s status updates for local information. (Xfinity weather-event FAQs)
Which backup options address which outage?
| Option | Can help when | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Modem/router battery backup or UPS | Home electricity fails but the provider’s broadband network remains powered and intact. | Does not fix a provider-side outage. Runtime and device compatibility depend on the equipment and backup unit. |
| Phone hotspot | Cellular service is working and your carrier plan allows tethering. | Data limits or charges, coverage, and phone battery can constrain use. |
| Dedicated hotspot | You have a suitable device and cellular plan, and mobile service is available. | Still depends on cellular coverage and power; availability and plan terms vary. |
| Temporary Wi-Fi or loaned hotspot | A nearby site or lending program is open and accessible. | Local availability can change during a storm. Confirm before setting out. |
| Battery-powered or crank radio | Internet and possibly cellular service are unavailable, but you need local information. | Provides information, not internet access. |
Choose based on which dependency failed: home electricity, fixed broadband, or cellular service. Consider compatibility, runtime or data allowance, fees, and whether you can safely reach or use the alternative. No option is guaranteed to work through every storm.

When a battery backup will keep Wi-Fi available
A battery backup or UPS can temporarily power a modem and router during a home power outage only if the broadband network outside your home is still powered and intact. Ireland’s Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) recommends considering a battery backup under that condition and suggests asking your provider for advice. The backup powers equipment in your home; it cannot repair a cut cable, flooded network equipment, or a provider outage. (ComReg, January 20, 2026)
Before choosing a unit, check the modem and router’s power requirements, how each will connect to the backup, and how long you need them to run. Runtime varies with the equipment and battery; there is no universal number of hours to expect.

Use hotspots and public Wi-Fi cautiously
A phone hotspot may connect essential devices if cellular service remains operational. Check your carrier’s hotspot eligibility, data allowance, and charges first. Xfinity warns that hotspot data counts toward its billing cycle, while Southern California Edison advises checking with your mobile provider about additional charges. Mobile networks can also be affected during a widespread storm, so a hotspot is not a guaranteed fallback. (Xfinity weather-event FAQs; Southern California Edison outage tips)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSome schools, libraries, workplaces, or community facilities may offer Wi-Fi or loaned hotspots, but do not assume a location is open or a device is available during severe weather. Check first, and do not travel if conditions are unsafe.

Generator and electrical safety
- Keep generators outdoors. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says never to use a generator or gasoline-powered engine inside a home, basement, or garage, or less than 20 feet from a window, door, or vent. Use a battery-backed or battery-powered carbon monoxide detector and follow the generator’s instructions. (CDC power-outage guidance)
- Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Government of Canada guidance says household wiring requires a properly installed, approved transfer panel and switch. Follow local requirements and use qualified help. (Government of Canada power-outage guidance)
- Do not approach downed lines. Keep well clear and report the hazard from a safe place. CDC also provides guidance on electrical hazards during disasters. (CDC electrical-hazard guidance)
- Consider surge precautions. Xfinity advises unplugging equipment during a weather-related outage and reconnecting it after power returns to guard against a potentially damaging initial surge. Follow your provider’s directions for your equipment.
Prepare for a storm-related outage
- Charge phones and backup batteries before severe weather, and use battery-saving settings if you cannot recharge.
- Keep a battery-powered or crank radio so you can receive local information if internet and cellular access fail.
- Plan separately for medical equipment, medication, medical alerts, or accessibility devices that rely on electricity or internet. Government of Canada guidance recommends discussing outage needs with medical professionals and checking whether a medical alert system works during a power failure. (Government of Canada power-outage guidance)
- Know how to check your ISP’s status updates and your local utility’s emergency instructions before the storm.
