Restart your PC, then try repairing the Windows Security app before attempting more disruptive recovery. If Repair does not help, use Reset if Windows offers it. Back up important files before considering removal of a recent update or other recovery steps. A failed launch alone does not establish whether your antivirus protection is on or off, so check through another available security-provider interface or contact qualified support if you cannot verify protection.
1. Restart and try opening Windows Security again
Save your work and restart Windows. After signing in, open Start, type Windows Security, and select the app. Microsoft describes Start as a way to open Windows Security, which provides an interface for security providers; a launch failure by itself does not show that protection is disabled. Windows offers Repair and Reset for some apps, but these options are not available for every app. The labels or path may differ slightly by Windows version. Microsoft advises selecting Reset if Repair is unavailable or does not fix the problem. Microsoft’s app repair instructions

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find Windows Security, select the menu beside it, and choose Advanced options if shown.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select Windows Security, then choose Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair if available. When it finishes, try opening Windows Security from Start.
- If Repair is missing or the app still will not open, return to the same options and select Reset if available. Reset can change app data or settings, so use it after the less disruptive Repair attempt.
3. Back up files before recovery
Before uninstalling an update or using a broader recovery option, copy important personal files to a safe destination. Microsoft recommends backing up files before troubleshooting and notes that you can copy them to a USB drive. An existing external drive or other reliable backup destination can also be used. 4. Consider uninstalling a recent quality update
If Windows Security stopped opening soon after a particular Windows update and restarting or app repair did not help, removing the latest quality update is an option—not proof that the update caused the problem. Microsoft Support says, “If the problem started after a recent Windows update, uninstalling it might fix the issue.” Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows

Uninstalling a security update can leave Windows without fixes that update provided. Microsoft cautions users to understand the risks before removing one. Use this step only when the timing supports it, you have backed up important files, and you are prepared to check for and reinstall appropriate updates afterward.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery and, beside Advanced startup, select Restart now. If you cannot reach Settings, use the recovery method described in Microsoft’s recovery options.
- In Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose Uninstall latest quality update and follow the prompts. Avoid choosing a feature update unless that is the update you intend to remove.
- When Windows starts again, try Windows Security and check Windows Update for available updates. If the problem remains, do not repeatedly remove updates; contact support.
5. Run system-file checks if you are comfortable with Command Prompt
Microsoft’s general Windows update troubleshooting guidance documents DISM and System File Checker (SFC) commands for repairing system files. It does not identify them as a confirmed fix for Windows Security failing to launch. Microsoft presents these as advanced steps for people comfortable with command-line work. 6. Get help when the PC is managed or remains unprotected
On a work- or school-managed PC, contact organizational IT before removing updates or changing recovery settings; device policies may control those options. If you cannot establish whether the device is protected, or these steps do not restore access, ask IT or a qualified Windows support provider for help.
For Windows 10 users, standard support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says standard support includes free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. If this PC still runs Windows 10, plan for a supported Windows version or another appropriate support arrangement. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information
