If your Windows PC feels slow or its battery drains quickly, check which process is actually using resources before blaming an AI feature. Microsoft specifically warns that Windows Studio Effects camera features can significantly affect performance and battery life on some devices. Turn off the relevant feature as a test, then compare behavior; there is no published memory or battery figure that predicts how much you should gain.
First, find what is using resources
- Open Task Manager: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- On the Processes page, check which apps and processes are using memory. Use Performance to inspect overall system activity.
- If the computer remains slow, review Startup apps for programs that launch automatically.
Note what is unusually busy and when it happens. A visible AI feature is not necessarily the cause; this check helps you distinguish it from another app or background process. Task Manager guidance is available from Microsoft’s Windows performance troubleshooting guide.

Test Windows Studio Effects if camera effects are on
Studio Effects includes options such as automatic framing, eye contact, background effects, and voice focus. Microsoft warns that, on some devices, turning on camera effects might significantly affect performance and battery life. The effect varies by device, and Microsoft does not publish a typical memory figure or guaranteed improvement from turning effects off.
Turn effects off
- Open Quick Settings from the taskbar and select the Studio Effects tile to switch effects off.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select your camera, and disable the effects you do not need.
- Try turning off one effect at a time, then compare performance and battery behavior during similar use.
Controls and individual effects depend on the device’s hardware and NPU support. If the tile is missing, it may need to be added to Quick Settings; if camera-effect settings are unavailable, the device may not support them. See Microsoft’s Windows Studio Effects guidance.

Review Recall only if your PC supports it and you use it
Recall is an opt-in Copilot+ PC feature. If you enabled snapshot saving, you can pause or turn it off, filter apps and websites, or delete saved snapshots. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots to review the controls. Microsoft says snapshots and associated Recall information are stored locally. Depending on Windows privacy settings, some diagnostic data may still be provided; local Recall storage does not mean no device-related diagnostics can ever leave the PC.
Recall requirements are not a memory-usage estimate
Microsoft’s documented requirements include 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and 50 GB of free storage to enable Recall. Automatic snapshot saving pauses when free storage falls below 25 GB. These are eligibility and storage thresholds, not evidence that Recall is currently using excessive RAM or that a RAM upgrade will fix a slowdown. Requirements and feature availability may change. Use Windows power settings when battery life is the priority
For a broad reduction in power use, go to Settings > System > Power & battery and set Power mode to Best power efficiency. Windows describes this mode as limiting background activity to reduce consumption. You can also turn on Battery Saver when appropriate. These are general Windows power measures, not targeted fixes for AI processing, and results vary by device and workload. See Microsoft’s Power mode instructions and Battery Saver guidance.
Change one setting at a time, then check again
- Record the process or behavior that looks abnormal in Task Manager.
- Turn off one relevant feature, such as a Studio Effect or Recall snapshot saving, rather than changing several settings at once.
- Repeat a similar task and compare Task Manager and battery behavior.
- If the same process remains unusually resource-heavy, investigate that process and check for Windows or device updates. Copilot+ AI components can be serviced through Windows Update separately from core feature updates, but installing updates is not a guaranteed fix for an individual issue.
