Windows AI is not one switch: Copilot+ PC experiences have hardware thresholds, and features such as Recall and Click to Do add their own security, app, language, or sign-in conditions. Work through the checks below before considering recovery or a hardware upgrade.
Start by identifying the feature and checking eligibility
Write down the exact feature that is missing—such as Recall, Click to Do, or Windows Studio Effects—and compare its requirements with your PC’s specifications. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC eligibility information describes the device class, including an NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS. Individual features can have additional requirements. A Copilot key or a processor brand alone does not establish that a particular feature is supported.

Check the PC manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and configuration, including NPU, memory, storage, and security hardware. A standard Windows 11 PC may offer some AI-related features without qualifying for every Copilot+ PC experience. Start with free configuration checks; hardware is relevant only if the specific feature’s requirements are not met.
Run the general checks before troubleshooting further
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Microsoft says AI components can be serviced through Windows Update independently of core Windows feature updates, so check even if Windows appears current. Restart if Windows requests it. - Look for the feature’s own setting and entry point. Some features are off or their Quick Settings tile is absent. Use the feature-specific steps below rather than assuming that a missing shortcut means the PC is ineligible.
- Update related apps. For Click to Do actions involving Photos or Paint, update those apps through Microsoft Store. Its Snipping Tool entry point has a minimum app version, covered below.
- Check account, language, and region. Click to Do’s intelligent text actions have specific language, selection-length, and sign-in conditions, and available actions vary by region.
- On a work or school PC, ask IT whether policy or device management affects the feature. If ordinary checks do not resolve a managed-device issue, Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guidance recommends involving organization IT.
If Windows Studio Effects is missing
Studio Effects requires an NPU and current Windows updates. Microsoft documents the full range of enhancements for Copilot+ PCs with an NPU above 40 TOPS. On NPU devices below 40 TOPS, it lists background effects, standard eye contact, automatic framing, and voice focus; some higher-end effects are limited to Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs. Where to find the controls
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Check Quick Settings. If the Studio Effects action is not visible, add it to Quick Settings.
- You can also look in the Camera app.
If the controls are absent, the device may lack an NPU or may not support the specific effect you want. Camera effects can affect performance and battery life.
If Click to Do is missing or will not open
Microsoft lists these Click to Do requirements: a Copilot+ PC or eligible Cloud PC, a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB RAM, eight logical processors, and 256 GB storage. Check Microsoft’s Click to Do support page against your exact device.

Try an available entry point
Depending on the device and setup, open Click to Do with Windows+click, Windows+Q, a right swipe on a touch-enabled PC, Windows Search, or Snipping Tool. The Snipping Tool entry point requires version 11.2411.20.0 or later. If the shortcut does nothing, check whether Click to Do is disabled at Settings > Privacy & security > Click to Do. When it is off, keyboard and touch entry points will not open the experience; another entry point may show an error.

If actions inside Click to Do are unavailable
- For intelligent text actions, English must be the default language, the selection must contain at least 10 words, and you must be signed in with a Microsoft or Entra account.
- Actions differ by region. Microsoft documents unavailable actions in the EEA and China, among other regional differences; changing settings cannot make an action available where it is not offered.
- If Photos or Paint actions are missing, update the relevant app through Microsoft Store.
These conditions apply to particular actions, not necessarily to every part of Click to Do.

If Recall is missing or unavailable
Recall is optional and, in the Microsoft support material cited here, described as a preview feature. Its requirements are more specific than simply owning a Copilot+ PC. Microsoft lists a secured-core Copilot+ PC, a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB storage, and at least 50 GB of free space to enable it. It also requires device encryption or BitLocker and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security with a biometric sign-in option. Review Microsoft’s Recall support page.
Even on an eligible setup, Recall does not save snapshots until the user opts in. Microsoft says snapshots and associated context are stored encrypted on the local drive. Users can pause or turn off saving, filter what is captured, and delete snapshots. If Recall is missing, check the eligibility and security requirements first, then confirm whether saving snapshots has been enabled.

When to use recovery—and when not to
Do not reset Windows as the first response to a missing AI feature. A reset cannot make an unsupported NPU, unavailable regional action, unmet language condition, or organization policy eligible. Microsoft’s recovery guidance advises starting with the least disruptive option and warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss. Use recovery only for a broader Windows problem after checking feature eligibility, updates, settings, and any applicable IT policy.
When a hardware change may be relevant
If the exact feature requires hardware your current PC lacks, the only substantiated physical-product option is an optional move to a Copilot+ PC that meets that feature’s requirements. Verify the exact model’s NPU capability, RAM, storage, and—if Recall is the goal—security and Windows Hello support before buying. A new PC will not resolve a software setting, an app-version issue, a regional restriction, a language or sign-in condition, or organization policy.
