If the taskbar and desktop are missing entirely, treat it as an Explorer or Windows shell startup problem instead. First identify which symptom you have; the right fix depends on that distinction.
Identify what disappeared
- App icons are blank, but the apps still launch: This matches Microsoft’s documented blank-shortcut issue. Start with the icon-cache repair below. Microsoft’s blank-icon guidance also covers blank shortcuts on the desktop and Start menu.
- One taskbar button or system-tray icon is missing: Check taskbar visibility settings or whether the app is still pinned. Windows 11 lets you customize taskbar items and some system-tray icons. Microsoft’s taskbar customization guidance describes those controls.
- The taskbar and desktop are missing or black after sign-in: This is broader than an icon-image problem and may involve Explorer or shell startup. Try launching Explorer from Task Manager as a temporary recovery step, then check update history and device context.
Repair blank taskbar icons with Microsoft’s procedure
Save open work first. Ending and restarting Windows Explorer can briefly remove the taskbar and desktop shell. Microsoft’s procedure deletes the local icon cache and then launches Explorer again.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Processes, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose End task.
- In Task Manager, select File > Run new task.
- Enter
cmd.exeand select the option to create the task with administrative privileges. - At the command prompt, run each command, pressing Enter after each:
CD /d %userprofile%AppDataLocal DEL IconCache.db /a - In Task Manager, select File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
Microsoft says clearing the cache restores taskbar icon display. If the icons remain blank, the same Microsoft article provides a further step to re-register Shell Experience Host for all users. That is an administrator-level PowerShell operation; follow Microsoft’s exact command and scope rather than using third-party registry scripts.
If a taskbar item or app pin is missing
Check taskbar and tray visibility
Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and review the relevant taskbar-item and system-tray visibility controls. A hidden control or tray icon is different from a blank app icon: changing visibility will not repair an icon-cache problem.

Pin the app again
If just one app shortcut has disappeared, find the app through Windows Search or Start, then choose Pin to taskbar. Re-pinning restores the shortcut; it does not address a broader Explorer startup failure.
If the taskbar and desktop do not load
Launch Explorer as a temporary recovery step
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and select OK.
Microsoft documents this as a temporary workaround for a desktop-loading issue on Windows 11 version 26H1. That issue was primarily observed on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix, so it should not be assumed to explain ordinary consumer PCs with blank icons. Microsoft says it was resolved in updates released from September 14, 2026, including KB5129194. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H1 release-health notice.

Consider managed-device update issues
Microsoft has also described a separate issue on enterprise devices running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and provisioned with monthly updates released from July 2025. Explorer, Start, Settings, Taskbar, or Search could fail when required XAML packages did not register in time. Microsoft says the resolution starts in updates released June 23, 2026, with rollout occurring gradually. If a work-managed PC has a missing taskbar or Start menu, ask IT to check its Windows version, update status, and deployment configuration. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 release-health notice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen Explorer keeps failing
If Explorer will not start reliably, or the problem returns after the icon-cache procedure, check Windows Update and restart the PC. Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance also points to System File Checker and Windows recovery options for persistent Explorer problems.

For support on a managed PC, share the Windows version and build, the date of recent updates, whether the device is enterprise-managed or uses Azure Virtual Desktop/FSLogix, and any relevant Explorer crash details. These details help distinguish a local icon-cache symptom from a configuration-specific shell startup issue.
