If Windows 11 keeps asking you to finish setting up your PC, first check whether you are still in the initial setup flow or whether the desktop is already available and the message is a later suggestion. If you can use the desktop, inspect Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings for Windows welcome and setup suggestions. If setup itself has not finished, identify the outstanding step instead; Windows Home and Pro require an internet connection to complete device setup.
First determine what kind of prompt you are seeing
The phrase “finish setting up your PC” does not identify one specific Windows feature. Note the exact wording and where it appears: before the desktop, as a notification banner after sign-in, on a Windows welcome screen, or in an account or OneDrive dialog. The right response depends on that distinction.
- Desktop available, prompt appears after sign-in: it may be a recurring welcome experience or setup suggestion.
- Still in the first-run setup screens: Windows may be waiting for a required setup step, such as an internet connection or account choice.
- Prompt specifically mentions a Microsoft account, Windows Backup, or OneDrive: it is presenting an account or cloud-service choice; review what that choice changes before accepting or disabling it.
Microsoft says the Windows welcome experience can show feature information and suggestions after updates or sign-in. See Microsoft’s guidance on managing notifications in Windows.

If you can reach the desktop, review welcome and setup notifications
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Expand or open Additional settings.
- Look for options related to the Windows welcome experience, suggestions, or tips, and turn off only the option that matches the prompt you want to stop.
Windows labels and the available controls can vary by release, so match the wording shown on your PC rather than relying on a label from another version. You can dismiss a notification banner, or adjust notifications for an individual app. Turning off every notification is broader than necessary for a single setup reminder.
If setup has not completed, finish the specific outstanding step
If Windows is still showing its initial setup screens and the desktop is not available, follow the step currently on screen rather than treating it as a notification problem. Microsoft describes device setup as covering tasks such as accepting the license terms, connecting to the internet, signing in or creating an account, and other setup choices; many settings can be changed later. The Get Started app can also guide users through device setup and Windows features. See Microsoft’s overview of essential services and connected experiences in Windows.
For Windows Home or Pro, an internet connection is required to finish setting up a device. If setup will not continue, check that the PC is connected to a working network. Microsoft’s setup connectivity guidance states: “An internet connection is required to finish setting up a device running Windows Home or Pro.”

If the prompt asks you to use a Microsoft account
A Microsoft account is associated with an email address and Microsoft services; a local account is specific to that device and does not require internet connectivity to sign in. Microsoft recommends using a Microsoft account, but a request to choose one is not, by itself, proof that a post-setup reminder must be accepted to make Windows usable.

If it mentions Windows Backup or OneDrive, check the right control
Windows Backup preference sync and OneDrive folder backup are separate features. Disabling one does not automatically disable the other, and neither change is simply a repair for a notification.
| Prompt or feature | Where to review it | What changing it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup preferences | Settings > Accounts > Windows backup | Windows settings and preferences that are backed up or synchronized through the account. Review the available controls before switching them off. Microsoft’s Windows backup and preferences guidance. |
| OneDrive folder backup | OneDrive settings | Whether selected folders are backed up to OneDrive. If you stop backing up a folder, newly added files there will no longer be backed up by that feature. See Microsoft’s OneDrive folder backup guidance. |
Review each feature independently before changing it, especially if you rely on cloud copies or want settings available on other devices. Unlinking, hiding, or uninstalling OneDrive is not a first-line response to a generic Windows setup reminder and can change your OneDrive experience; see Microsoft’s options for turning off or removing OneDrive.

If the message offers tips or recommendations
Windows device-usage selections can influence recommendations, offers, and tips. Review them at Settings > Personalization > Device usage; you can change your selections later. This is a relevant check when the prompt is about suggested ways to use the PC, rather than a step blocking first-run setup. See Microsoft’s device-usage settings guidance.
If the reminder continues, collect the details before trying advanced fixes
If the notification controls and the relevant account or backup settings do not explain the prompt, record its exact text and where it appears. Also note the Windows edition, version and build, and whether the PC is managed by a workplace or school. Those details help distinguish a Windows suggestion from a setup requirement or an organization-managed message. Avoid registry edits and third-party “repair” tools based only on the general wording of the prompt.
