If Find My Device keeps showing an old position for a Windows 11 PC, the cause is usually a missing prerequisite rather than a faulty map. Work through the checks below in order. Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed refresh interval or a dedicated repair for stale locations, so no fixed wait time can be promised. Confirm the settings first, then escalate to Microsoft Support if they are all correct.
What Find My Device needs before it can help
Microsoft’s guidance on essential Windows services states the core condition plainly: Find my device only works if you sign in to your device as an administrator using your Microsoft account and if the device’s location setting is turned on.

Confirm the account and its role
Sign in to the PC with the personal Microsoft account you use for Find My Device, and confirm that account has administrator status on the device. A standard user account is not enough. Then open

Confirm Find My Device was enabled
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device and check that the feature is on. If it was off before the problem started, the map has no earlier data to show, and the fix is to enable it now so that future lookups can work.

Confirm device location is on
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location and confirm that device-wide Location services is on. Microsoft says this device-wide setting is controlled by an administrator, and turning on location for individual apps does not override it. If device location is off, the PC cannot supply a location no matter what the web page shows.

Run a fresh lookup from the web
Go to
account.microsoft.com/devices, sign in, open Find My Device, select the correct PC, and choose Find. Check that the intended device is listed under the account. Read the result with its limits in mind
Windows can estimate location from several sources. The map may draw on GPS, nearby wireless access points and routers, cell towers, the IP address, or a default location. Accuracy varies by device and conditions, so an approximate or coarse result does not prove that the PC’s GPS receiver is missing or broken. (Microsoft Support, Windows location service and privacy)

Escalate only after the settings check out
If the account, the enabled setting, device location, and the device listing are all correct and the map still does not change, contact Microsoft Support through the support site. Bring the Microsoft account email, the PC name, and the time of your last lookup. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not describe a special stale-map repair, so support is the next step rather than another local setting.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- The PC is missing from the web device list. The Windows sign-in account and the web account probably differ. Sign out of the wrong account and repeat step 1.
- The map shows a location, but it is old or city-level. Check the device-wide Location setting and then run a new lookup. Coarse results are normal when GPS and nearby Wi-Fi signals are unavailable.
- Find My Device was never turned on. No setting change will make the past location appear. Enable the feature now so it is ready for the next time.
- Every prerequisite is correct and the map still does not change. Contact Microsoft Support rather than replacing hardware. Nothing in Microsoft’s guidance points to a hardware fix for a stale map.
Privacy and theft considerations
Microsoft’s lost-device guidance says that whenever someone attempts to locate the device, users using the device will see a notification in the notification area.
Anyone using the PC will therefore see that a lookup took place. If you believe the device has been stolen, Microsoft recommends contacting local law enforcement and your insurance company. Microsoft also says that de-identified location information may be shared with its current location service provider partners HERE and Skyhook to improve location services.
