Compare the monitoring data with similar periods, review inverter alerts, and check for shade, snow, or plausible soiling. If the shortfall is sudden, persists, or appears with a fault or outage, contact your installer or a qualified solar technician.
Confirm that production is actually below expectation
A momentary power reading in kilowatts is not the same as energy generated over time. Review daily, weekly, and monthly energy in your inverter, installer, or utility monitoring app. Compare periods from similar seasons and, where possible, similar weather. Look at the system’s own history before comparing it with another home; system size, orientation, shade, weather, and operating conditions can make those comparisons misleading.

A production estimate is a model, not a guarantee. NREL’s PVWatts notes that estimates involve assumptions and uncertainty, and cannot reflect every site-specific condition unless it is represented in the inputs. Treat an estimate as a reference point rather than a precise promise of what the system must generate.

Check monitoring data and system status
Open the monitoring interface you already use and look for inverter alerts, offline periods, missing data, unexpectedly flat production, or a change in readings by string or module if your system provides that detail. A monitoring gap can make production appear low even when the underlying issue is missing data; repeated fault messages or an outage are stronger reasons to request service.

- ✅ Engineered for Solar Professionals Auto-ranging simplifies operation for technicians, while IP54 dust/water resistance and low-power auto-off ensure reliability in outdoor installations.
NREL operations and maintenance guidance recommends assessing measured performance against an expected-performance model, rather than treating a raw reading as a diagnosis. The relevant comparison depends on the system and its operating conditions.
Compare likely causes with the evidence
Several different mechanisms can reduce output. The pattern and available evidence help narrow the possibilities, but no single cause can be identified for an unspecified system without its design, location, weather, and monitoring history.

| Possible cause | Clues to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Shade or snow | New or seasonal shadows from trees, buildings, roof features, or nearby objects; snow covering modules. The change may be seasonal or tied to a new obstruction. | Note when and where the array is shaded or covered. Partial-shading effects vary with module and system configuration, so a visible shadow does not imply one universal percentage loss. |
| Dust, pollen, or other soiling | Material on module surfaces, especially where local conditions make dust or seasonal buildup plausible. | Consider cleaning only when soiling is plausible, access is safe, and manufacturer guidance permits it. Rain alone may not remove pollen in some environments. |
| Inverter limitation or loss | A lower midday AC peak, inverter alerts, or output patterns that vary with operating conditions. | Consider system design and conditions before treating a lower peak as a fault. Clipping and temperature-related derating are different effects and require context to interpret. |
| System outage or fault | Repeated inverter faults, offline periods, missing production, or a sudden unexplained change. | Contact the installer or a qualified PV technician if the issue persists or requires electrical troubleshooting. |
| Gradual module aging | A slow change over a long period rather than an abrupt drop. | Compare records across years while accounting for weather and measurement uncertainty; gradual aging does not explain every shortfall. |
Check shade, snow, and other changes in sunlight
Look for new or seasonal shade from growing trees, nearby construction, roof features, or other objects. Snow cover can also reduce the sunlight reaching modules. NLR’s System Advisor Model documentation treats external shading, self-shading, and snow as reductions in incident irradiance. The effect of partial shade depends on module and system configuration, so there is no reliable universal loss percentage to apply to every visible shadow.
Consider cleaning only when soiling is plausible
Dust and other seasonal material on module surfaces can block some incoming sunlight. Pollen may be a concern in some locations: an NREL study found that pollen coating reduced performance at every site it examined and cautioned that regular rainfall was not enough to assume panels were clean in certain environments. That finding does not establish that pollen is the cause of a particular system’s shortfall.

Do not climb onto a roof or handle electrical equipment to investigate. If cleaning seems warranted, follow the module manufacturer’s guidance and use a safe access method; when safe access is not available or the cause is unclear, ask the installer or a qualified cleaner. Cleaning will not fix shade, inverter limits, outages, or electrical faults.
Interpret inverter behavior in context
Inverter clipping can occur when available DC power exceeds the inverter’s AC rating. Temperature-related derating and other inverter losses can also affect output. NLR’s System Advisor Model documentation distinguishes clipping from thermal derating, but a lower midday AC peak alone does not prove equipment failure. The system’s design and operating conditions matter.

Allow for gradual aging, not unexplained sudden drops
Module performance generally changes gradually. NREL’s Photovoltaic Lifetime Project describes typical module performance loss as often less than 1% per year, while noting that the change can be difficult to detect in the first several years because of measurement uncertainty. Separately, a 2024 NREL fleet analysis reported a median performance loss of 0.75% per year and losses below 2% per year for 90% of the systems studied. These are different descriptions and study populations—not a forecast, guarantee, or warranty threshold for an individual installation.
Know when to call the installer
Contact your installer or a qualified PV technician if production remains below a reasonable comparison, the change is sudden and unexplained, monitoring shows repeated faults or outages, or investigation would require roof access or opening electrical equipment. There is no universal percentage threshold for calling service. Check your system documentation and applicable warranty terms for installation-specific requirements.
