What to Do When Solana Transactions Are Slow or Fail

A safe troubleshooting sequence for slow or failed Solana transactions: preserve the signature, check status, read the error, and choose the right fix without blindly resending a payment.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Solana transaction seems stuck, keep its signature and check its status before doing anything else. A successful send response only means an RPC accepted the signed transaction; it does not prove the cluster processed or confirmed it. Use the status and any error to decide whether to wait, fix the transaction, or investigate the RPC endpoint. Do not blindly resend a payment: the original may already have landed.

First, keep the signature and check what happened

Find the transaction signature in the wallet or application that submitted the transaction. Keep it available while troubleshooting: it is the identifier you need to look up the transaction, rather than a reason to submit it again. Query getSignatureStatuses through a healthy Solana RPC endpoint, or inspect the transaction in Solana Explorer when appropriate.

Do not treat a successful sendTransaction response as confirmation. Solana’s documentation explicitly cautions that a successful response from this method does not guarantee the cluster processed or confirmed the transaction. The method relays the signed transaction; the response can arrive before the cluster has processed it. Sending and confirming are different events.

  • It has a confirmed outcome: use the transaction’s result and the receiving application’s or wallet’s displayed state to determine whether the action completed. Avoid submitting a second payment just because the first screen did not update.
  • It is still unresolved or no status is returned: check again through a healthy endpoint and consider whether the transaction’s validity window is still open. An absent result alone is not proof of failure.
  • It has an execution or simulation error: read the specific error before changing fees or submitting anything else. The remedy depends on the cause.

A wallet may show a spinner or a generic pending message while the underlying status is not yet clear. Preserve the signature even if you close or reopen the wallet; the signature lets you examine the transaction independently of that display.

Why is my Solana transaction taking so long?

There is no single wait time that establishes whether a Solana transaction is slow or failed. The network’s current conditions, the transaction’s priority, and the RPC endpoint’s health can all affect what you see. The available official material does not establish a universal average wait or a guaranteed landing time, so do not use an arbitrary timer as proof that a payment did not happen.

The RPC accepted it, but the cluster has not confirmed it

A send response is not a final transaction result. The application may have successfully passed the signed transaction to an RPC service while cluster processing or confirmation is still pending. Use the signature to check status rather than repeatedly pressing a wallet’s send button.

The endpoint may be slow, rate-limited, or returning stale information

Public Solana RPC endpoints are shared and rate-limited. An endpoint can also respond quickly while returning state that is behind the cluster. That can make a transaction appear unresolved, or make surrounding balance and account information misleading. If the result seems inconsistent, query through a healthy endpoint before concluding that the transaction failed.

Priority and transaction validity are separate issues

An optional prioritization fee can improve scheduling priority, but it is not a promise of confirmation. A transaction can also become invalid because its recent blockhash is no longer acceptable. Paying a higher priority fee does not repair an expired blockhash, an insufficient balance, or a program error.

What to do when a Solana transaction is pending or stuck

For an individual wallet user, the safest sequence is to check first, wait only while the original may still be valid, and act on what the status or error actually says.

  1. Copy the signature. Use the signature shown by the submitting wallet or application. Do not rely only on a notification, spinner, or success message.
  2. Look up the signature. Query getSignatureStatuses on a healthy endpoint, or inspect it in Solana Explorer. Make note of any reported error and whether the transaction has a processed outcome.
  3. If the result is unresolved, check again. If practical, use a healthy endpoint rather than repeatedly querying a failing or lagging one. An unresolved result is not the same as a confirmed failure.
  4. Consider the blockhash validity window. Recent blockhashes are time-limited. Solana’s current transaction documentation states a maximum recent-blockhash processing age of 150 slots. This is a protocol limit, not a fixed number of seconds: slot timing and endpoint freshness matter.
  5. Do not create a duplicate action while the first is uncertain. In particular, do not submit a second payment simply because the interface has not updated. Verify the original signature’s outcome first.
  6. If it has failed, use the error to choose a correction. Fix the actual cause before preparing another transaction; resubmitting unchanged transaction data will not address an expired blockhash, missing account, or program-level error.

If the application does not expose a signature, contact its support or consult its transaction history before attempting the action again. Without the signature, it is harder to tell whether the original request was relayed or landed.

What to do when a Solana transaction failed

Solana transactions are atomic: all instructions in a transaction succeed together, or the transaction’s state changes are reverted if an instruction fails. The transaction fee is still charged when execution fails. That means a failed transaction can leave balances or account state unchanged while still reducing the fee payer’s SOL balance.

Read the specific simulation or execution error and match the correction to it. The common cases below require different actions.

Expired or unrecognized blockhash

A transaction built with a recent blockhash cannot be treated as valid indefinitely. If the blockhash has expired or is not recognized, fetch a fresh blockhash, rebuild the transaction, and sign the new transaction. First inspect the original signature: if the original already landed, creating a fresh transaction for the same action could duplicate it.

For developers, fetch the blockhash from an endpoint whose state is fresh, and keep the related transaction steps on a healthy endpoint where possible. An endpoint that is behind can supply stale information or make a valid transaction look out of date.

Not enough SOL for the fee

The fee payer must have enough SOL to pay the transaction fee. A token balance does not substitute for SOL needed for fees. Check the fee payer’s SOL balance separately from the balance of the token the transaction is meant to transfer or use.

Insufficient token balance

If the error concerns the token amount, check the relevant token balance and the transaction’s intended amount. Increasing the priority fee does not add tokens to the account. Correct the balance or transaction inputs before attempting a new transaction.

Missing token account

A token-related failure can result from a required token account being absent. The production guidance identifies a missing associated token account as a distinct issue. Address the account requirement in the transaction flow; merely sending the same unchanged transaction again will not create the missing account or resolve the error.

Simulation or program error

sendTransaction performs signature verification and preflight simulation unless configured otherwise. If simulation or execution identifies a program error, inspect the failing instruction and its inputs. A higher fee cannot fix invalid instruction data or a condition the program rejects. Developers who disable preflight should understand that they are foregoing that check before relay; they still need to examine the eventual transaction result.

Should you increase the Solana priority fee?

Only consider a priority fee when the transaction is otherwise valid and scheduling priority is the likely issue. Solana fees have a base component and an optional prioritization component. The optional component can improve scheduling priority, but the appropriate amount varies with recent conditions and transaction compute settings; it does not guarantee that the transaction will land.

Solana’s current fee documentation states a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. This is a documented base-fee parameter, not a complete quote for every transaction: the optional prioritization component can change the total. Fees are paid in SOL and remain charged when execution fails, so diagnose the error before paying more.

  • A plausible scheduling issue: a valid transaction is competing for priority under current conditions. A priority fee may help, but there is no guaranteed result.
  • An expired blockhash: fetch a fresh blockhash and rebuild. A fee increase does not refresh transaction validity.
  • Insufficient SOL or tokens: address the relevant balance. Paying for priority does not satisfy a balance requirement.
  • A missing account or program error: correct the account setup or instruction inputs. A higher fee does not correct transaction logic.

For a wallet user, use the wallet’s fee controls only when you understand what they change. If the error points to an account or balance problem, changing a fee is unlikely to help and may add cost without addressing the cause.

Production guidance: distinguish transaction trouble from RPC trouble

For an application operator, a slow or missing status is not automatically a transaction failure. The endpoint handles reads and submissions, and its latency, freshness, rate limits, or errors can make the transaction workflow appear broken. Solana advises against relying on shared public RPC endpoints for production payment flows.

Keep related operations—obtaining a blockhash, simulating, sending, and checking confirmation—on a healthy endpoint when possible. Mixing endpoints with different freshness can produce confusing results, such as building from one view of the cluster and checking through a lagging one. This does not remove the need to inspect the signature; it makes that inspection more dependable.

Compare providers against your workload

Choose an RPC provider based on measurements from your application’s region and its actual load, rather than a single best-case response. Solana’s provider-selection guidance points to these comparison dimensions:

What to compare Why it matters
Latency and tail latency Typical response time and slower outliers both affect the user experience and time-sensitive transaction steps.
Error and timeout rates Measure under normal and peak load so occasional failures are not hidden by an average.
Returned-slot freshness and commitment consistency Stale reads or mismatched views can confuse status checks and transaction preparation.
Request, bandwidth, WebSocket, and concurrency limits Limits determine whether the service can handle the application’s usage pattern.
Transaction routing, retry, and status features These features affect how transactions are delivered and how operators can follow their outcomes.
Portability and fallback operations A fallback is useful only if the application can switch safely and continue checking the original signature.

Use bounded retries and freshness checks

Production systems should use timeouts, bounded retries with backoff, health checks, and a planned fallback. “Bounded” matters: unending retries can add load without resolving a stale endpoint, rate limit, or application error. Before retrying a transaction submission, distinguish retrying delivery from creating a new signed transaction or repeating the underlying payment action. Track the original signature and check its status so a recovery path does not turn an uncertain result into a duplicate payment.

Monitor returned-slot freshness as well as response latency. A fast endpoint response is not useful if the returned state is stale. When a provider is unhealthy, route reads and transaction workflow steps to a healthy alternative according to a defined fallback policy, then continue to resolve the original signature rather than assuming it failed.

Protocol limits that matter to developers

Current Solana documentation lists several concrete limits relevant when diagnosing transaction construction or execution. These are protocol and documentation parameters, not performance measurements or guarantees about how quickly a transaction will confirm.

Parameter Documented value How to use it
Standard transaction maximum size 1,232 bytes Check serialized transaction size if construction or relay fails due to an oversized transaction.
Recent-blockhash processing age 150 slots maximum Build with a fresh blockhash and consider endpoint freshness; this is slot-based, not a guaranteed duration in seconds.
Base fee 5,000 lamports per signature Budget SOL for fees separately from the transferred token amount; an optional prioritization fee may apply.
Maximum compute units per transaction 1.4 million Review compute requirements and transaction configuration if execution or compute limits are implicated.

These values are stated on Solana’s current documentation pages accessed in 2026. They do not reveal the cause of a particular failure by themselves. Use the actual signature status, error, and transaction details to diagnose a specific case.

A short decision path

  • No signature or status evidence yet: retrieve the signature from the submitting app and look it up before deciding to submit again.
  • Status is unresolved: check again through a healthy endpoint and account for the recent blockhash validity window.
  • Original action completed: do not repeat it merely to refresh the wallet interface.
  • Blockhash error: verify the original signature, then rebuild and sign using a fresh blockhash if needed.
  • Balance or token-account error: correct the specific SOL, token, or account condition.
  • Program or simulation error: inspect the instruction and its inputs instead of increasing the fee.
  • Repeated delays across transactions: investigate endpoint latency, errors, rate limits, and freshness; use bounded retries and a fallback plan in production.
