What to Do When Satellite Internet Is Unavailable or Disrupted

A practical guide to diagnosing satellite internet outages, restarting Viasat or Starlink equipment safely, handling weather and preparing backup communications.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When satellite internet stops working, first determine whether your provider has a network outage. Then check power, connections, visible cable damage, dish obstructions and weather using the troubleshooting steps for your specific system. If the provider reports an outage or those checks do not restore service, stop repeatedly resetting equipment and contact official support. Prepare a separate way to receive alerts and charge phones, because a backup connection or radio can improve resilience but cannot repair a failed satellite link.

Start by identifying the scope of the failure

Before changing anything, note what has actually failed. If every phone, computer, television and smart device loses internet access, the problem is more likely to involve the modem or gateway, dish, power, provider network or a shared cable. If only one device is offline, check that device’s Wi-Fi, airplane-mode, network-selection and application settings before disturbing satellite equipment.

Write down when the interruption began and whether it followed a power blink, electrical storm, heavy precipitation, construction, moving the dish or changing your router. This information helps distinguish a local installation fault from a provider-side event and gives support a useful timeline.

1. Check the provider’s outage and status channels

Use the installed system’s official app, support website, outage map, automated phone channel or service-alert page. A provider network fault can look exactly like a failed modem at home, so an outage check should precede repeated resets. Viasat specifically directs customers to check its outage channels because a network issue may appear to be a local connection problem. Starlink likewise uses its app to report service condition and troubleshooting information.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • If an outage is confirmed: save the incident message or reference number, monitor the provider’s updates and avoid cycling equipment unless support instructs you to do so.
  • If no outage is listed: continue with power, connection, weather and obstruction checks. Status maps can lag or omit a very local fault, so an “all clear” does not prove that your installation is healthy.
  • If the app itself cannot connect: use cellular data, another internet connection or the provider’s telephone support channel to check status.

2. Check power and isolate the affected equipment

Look at the modem or gateway, router, power injector and any indoor satellite unit. Confirm that each has power and that its indicator lights match the provider’s current troubleshooting guidance. A tripped breaker, switched-off power strip, failed surge protector or loose adapter can interrupt the entire installation.

Check whether the router is powered but the satellite modem is not, or whether both are dark. If the router has power but reports “no internet,” the fault may be upstream of Wi-Fi. If the router is off, restore its power before diagnosing the satellite link. During a storm, do not handle wet plugs, exposed wiring or equipment connected to damaged electrical circuits.

For intermittent service, test more than one device. Starlink’s guidance uses the distinction between one affected device and all devices when narrowing the cause. A single-device failure generally calls for local Wi-Fi or device troubleshooting; an outage on every device points toward shared equipment, the dish, weather or the provider.

3. Inspect cables and connections safely

With power disconnected only where the provider’s instructions permit it, check visible coaxial, Ethernet and power connections. Plugs should be fully seated and free of bent pins, corrosion or debris. Look for cuts, crushed sections, sharp kinks, chew marks, water intrusion and cable pulled tight against a wall or roof edge. Starlink specifically recommends checking connections and visible cable damage.

  • Do not open a sealed power supply or satellite terminal.
  • Do not climb onto a roof, ladder or icy surface to reach a dish.
  • Do not touch outdoor hardware during lightning, high winds or flooding.
  • Photograph suspected damage from a safe location for support or an installer.

A damaged outdoor cable can require replacement or professional service; software, DNS changes or a factory reset will not repair physical damage. If a connector is loose but accessible and dry, reseat it exactly as the provider’s guide describes rather than substituting a different cable type.

4. Check the dish’s view of the sky

Satellite terminals need an unobstructed view of the required portion of the sky. New foliage, a moved vehicle, scaffolding, a temporary awning, construction equipment or accumulated snow can block that view. Use the provider’s app obstruction tool when available. Starlink’s offline guidance emphasizes a clear sky view and lists obstructions, relocation and snow accumulation among possible causes.

Only inspect the dish from ground level or another location explicitly safe for you. Never remove snow or ice by climbing to the terminal. If an obstruction is permanent, moving the dish may require a new mounting position, cable route and provider-approved installation; relocating it without checking the system’s requirements can create a second problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Account for weather, including weather far from your home

Weather does not affect every satellite service in the same way. Viasat says cloud cover and light rain or snow should not ordinarily interrupt its connection, while a very severe thunderstorm or heavy snowstorm may cause a temporary loss. It says service generally returns without action and characterizes those weather interruptions as typically lasting no more than 20 minutes. That is Viasat’s service guidance, not a universal duration or guarantee for another provider.

Starlink lists storms and snow accumulation among conditions to check. Heavy precipitation can reduce the signal, while wet snow can add physical weight or cover a dish. A clear sky above your house does not rule out a network weather problem: Viasat notes that severe weather at a distant gateway can affect customers whose local conditions are clear.

Record the weather and exact start time. If the connection returns as the storm passes, avoid unnecessary equipment changes. If it remains offline after conditions improve, continue with the provider-specific sequence and contact support.

6. Restart equipment only according to the installed provider’s procedure

Restart intervals are not interchangeable. A sequence that is correct for one satellite system may leave another waiting for registration or cause a different fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
System guidance Restart instruction in the provider’s published troubleshooting What to expect
Viasat Unplug the modem or gateway for 30 seconds, reconnect it, then allow approximately 5–10 minutes to reconnect. Do not interrupt the reconnection window; status lights may change while the terminal reacquires service.
Starlink Disconnect power and leave the equipment disconnected for at least 10 seconds. Use the app to watch boot and service status after power is restored.

These are examples, not a universal reset recipe. Follow the instructions for the hardware and software version installed at your address. A factory reset is a separate, more disruptive action: it can erase network names, passwords or configuration and should be used only when the provider specifically directs it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

7. Escalate with the information support needs

Use the provider’s current official support page, app or phone channel; contact numbers, hours and menu names change. Tell the agent:

  • the exact time the failure began and whether it is continuous or intermittent;
  • whether every device is affected or only one;
  • what the app, modem or router reports;
  • whether a power event, storm, snow, relocation or construction preceded the failure;
  • which cables and indicators you checked;
  • the restart procedure you followed and when you completed it; and
  • photos of the installation or cable routing when requested.

Starlink asks customers for details such as onset, affected applications and times, installation or cable-routing photos and how the equipment is powered. Supplying those details reduces back-and-forth and helps support decide whether to push a remote fix, schedule service or investigate a wider incident.

What not to do during an outage

  • Do not keep rebooting during a confirmed provider outage. Repeated resets cannot repair a network-side fault and may make later diagnosis harder.
  • Do not climb or work outside in hazardous weather. Lightning, wind, ice and wet roofs create risks unrelated to the internet problem.
  • Do not assume a different provider’s timing applies. Viasat’s 30-second unplug and Starlink’s 10-second minimum are different instructions.
  • Do not factory-reset first. Preserve configuration unless official support tells you to erase it.
  • Do not install generic “repair” software as a network fix. It cannot restore a provider outage, clear a blocked dish or repair damaged cable.

Keep communicating when satellite internet is down

A separate communications plan matters because an internet outage can coincide with a power failure or severe weather. FEMA recommends a family emergency communications plan, a paper copy of that plan and checking whether phones will work during a power outage and how long their battery backup lasts. Keep phones and other essential electronics charged and identify alternative power sources before an incident.

For readers in the United States, Ready Business recommends a NOAA Weather Radio with single area message encoding (SAME), a mobile alert app, local emergency notifications, backup batteries and chargers. Assigning someone to monitor the radio during an event prevents alerts from being missed while others handle safety tasks. A portable USB power bank can extend phone life when it is charged in advance and is compatible with the devices you need to run.

These tools provide alerts or charging; they do not restore satellite broadband. For imminent danger, use whatever emergency channels are available and follow local authorities. Phone and emergency-calling behavior varies by country, carrier, handset and power conditions, so do not assume that a satellite internet subscription alone provides emergency voice service.

Choosing a backup connection without misunderstanding its purpose

Backup internet is useful only when it covers the failure you are likely to experience. Viasat describes satellite service as a backup for fiber, DSL or cable failure. HughesNet describes a business failover arrangement in which an automatic router uses terrestrial DSL or cable as the primary path and satellite as backup; its product information says most failovers take less than three minutes and failback occurs after primary service returns. That is a business offering description, not proof of current availability or suitability for every household.

Failure you need to cover Potentially useful redundancy Important limitation
Local Wi-Fi or router failure A spare router or wired connection tested in advance It will not help if the satellite modem, dish or provider network is down.
Terrestrial fiber, DSL or cable outage A separately provisioned satellite failover service It requires coverage, compatible equipment, current terms and independent power.
Power outage UPS or other properly sized backup power for the modem, router and critical devices Runtime is limited, and unsafe generator or wiring practices can be dangerous.
Satellite provider or weather outage Cellular data, another terrestrial ISP or a separately located connection A second satellite link may share weather, gateway or regional vulnerabilities.

Before paying for redundancy, verify coverage, activation requirements, data limits, failover behavior, independent power and whether critical devices can use the backup. There is no universal backup that guarantees protection from every satellite disruption.

A concise decision path

  1. Check the provider’s official outage channel using cellular data or another connection.
  2. Confirm power to the modem, gateway, router and satellite equipment.
  3. Test more than one device to separate a single-device fault from a system-wide failure.
  4. Inspect accessible connections and visible cables without entering unsafe areas.
  5. Use the provider app to check obstructions, dish status and weather-related messages.
  6. Perform only the provider’s specified restart, observing its full reconnection time.
  7. If service remains down, contact official support with the timeline, symptoms, weather, power events, photos and completed checks.
  8. Use your separate alert and charging plan while waiting; do not rely on repeated resets to shorten a confirmed outage.
