Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, snow, and ice can interrupt a satellite-internet signal. The disruption may be temporary and recover as conditions improve. A clear sky at your house does not rule out a weather outage: your connection also travels through a provider gateway and other remote network equipment that may be under a storm.
Start by checking whether your provider reports an outage, then verify power, status lights, and cable connections. Reboot only according to your provider’s instructions. If service remains down after the weather clears, run the provider’s diagnostics and contact support; the cause may be wiring, equipment, line of sight, or a wider network problem rather than weather alone.

Why bad weather can interrupt satellite internet
A satellite connection has a longer radio path than cable, fiber, or most cellular links. Data travels between your dish, a satellite, and a ground gateway connected to the internet. Intense precipitation can weaken the signal enough for the modem to lose synchronization. Snow or ice on the antenna can also block or scatter the signal.

Hughesnet and Viasat say ordinary cloud cover, light rain, and fog often have little effect. Starlink’s guidance notes that moderate to heavy rain, snow, and hail can cause momentary dropouts. Severe thunderstorms and heavy snow or ice are more likely to produce an intermittent or complete loss. Providers do not publish identical thresholds, so one service may remain usable in conditions that interrupt another.

Your local sky can be clear while the network is down
The dish at your home is only one part of the route. A provider’s gateway, satellite link, or regional network facility may be experiencing heavy weather elsewhere. That is why an outage can continue even when sunlight has returned to your location. Check the provider’s outage notice before assuming the dish itself has failed.
What to expect in different conditions
| Condition | Likely effect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clouds, fog, or light rain | Often little or no effect, according to Hughesnet and Viasat. | Check equipment and outage status if service drops; do not assume the weather is the cause. |
| Moderate to heavy rain | Momentary or intermittent loss is possible. Starlink specifically identifies moderate to heavy rain as a dropout trigger. | Wait through the heaviest part of the storm and monitor the provider’s status tools. |
| Thunderstorms and hail | Severe precipitation can interrupt the satellite path and may affect a distant gateway. | Avoid repeated reboots while lightning or intense rain is active; check for a network outage first. |
| Heavy snow or ice | Accumulation on the antenna can reduce reception or cause temporary loss. | Use a built-in snow-melt feature if your equipment has one, or clear only from a safely reachable position. |
What to do during an active storm
1. Wait out the most intense precipitation
If heavy rain, hail, or snow is still falling, a short loss may be normal. Give the link time to recover instead of repeatedly unplugging the modem. Repeated power cycles do not clear a blocked satellite path and can make it harder to tell whether the connection is improving.
Viasat says its typical weather outages usually last no more than 20 minutes, even when rain or snow continues. That is provider-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every plan, location, or storm. Other providers may recover faster or take longer.

2. Check the provider’s outage tools
Use the provider’s current status page or mobile app over a phone’s cellular connection. Viasat lists its mobile app and an automated outage phone line as ways to check service availability, although tools and availability can vary by location. A provider-declared outage means there is little useful troubleshooting to do at home until the network is repaired.

3. Confirm power to the indoor equipment
Look at the modem or gateway and, if you use one, the separate Wi-Fi router. Confirm that each power adapter is firmly connected to a working outlet and that the normal indicator lights are on. Consult the equipment manual or the provider’s light guide before interpreting a red, amber, or flashing light; the same color does not mean the same thing on every model.
4. Check every accessible cable
With the equipment powered off or disconnected as the manual directs, make sure the coaxial cable from the dish and the Ethernet cable to the router are fully seated. Look for a loose connector, a sharply bent cable, water intrusion, or storm damage near the wall entry point. Do not climb outside to inspect a roof-mounted dish during rain, lightning, wind, or icy conditions.
Restart equipment using the correct procedure
Satellite modems and gateways do not all use the same reboot timing. Follow the instructions for your exact provider and model rather than applying a generic power-cycle rule.
| Provider guidance | Published restart instruction | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Viasat | Unplug the modem or gateway for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and allow 5–10 minutes to come back online. If a separate router is used, bring the modem online before reconnecting the router. | These timings apply to Viasat’s published support procedure; another provider’s equipment may differ. |
| Hughesnet | Remove power from the modem at the wall for 10 seconds, then reconnect it. | Use Hughesnet’s own light guide and support steps if the connection does not return. |
| Other providers or models | Use the current support page, app, or printed manual for the installed equipment. | Do not guess a delay or disconnect the dish cable unless the provider specifically tells you to. |
After reconnecting, wait for the modem to complete its startup sequence before testing a website. Satellite equipment may need several minutes to reacquire the network, obtain authorization, and establish a usable link.

Deal with snow and ice without creating a safety hazard
Check whether accumulation is actually covering the antenna
Snow fully covering a dish can cause intermittent connectivity or temporary loss. A thin layer may not matter, while wet, packed snow or ice can block the receiving surface. Ice attached to the mounting hardware can also create a risk of damage if it falls or is pried away.
Use only safe, gentle clearing methods
Clear snow only when the antenna is reachable from the ground or another stable, protected position. Never climb onto a roof, ladder, or icy surface during or immediately after a storm just to restore internet service. Starlink advises gentle clearing and warns against picks, chisels, and scrapers, which can scratch or damage the dish. Viasat says an easily accessible antenna may be wiped clean.
A soft-bristle brush can be used for a safely reachable dish, but it will not fix rain fade, a distant gateway outage, or an unsafe access problem. Do not pour hot water on the antenna: rapid temperature changes can refreeze, and water can enter places that are not meant to be wet.
Use a dish’s built-in snow feature when available
Starlink equipment includes a Snow Melt setting in its app with Automatic, Pre-heat, and Off modes. Pre-heat can increase power use. Enable the feature only as described in the current app and equipment guidance; it cannot overcome a provider-wide outage or severe blockage elsewhere on the route.

If the weather has cleared but service is still out
Once precipitation and dangerous conditions have passed, work through these checks in order. Stop when you find a provider-declared outage or a safety issue that requires a technician.
- Recheck outage status. A gateway or regional network may still be offline even though your local sky is clear.
- Read the modem lights. Compare the lights with the provider’s current guide. A power light with no network or receive light points to a different problem than a completely dark unit.
- Inspect indoor connections again. Confirm the coax and Ethernet plugs are secure and that the router is connected to the modem’s intended port.
- Perform one provider-approved restart. Use the timing in the provider table or your model’s manual, then allow the full reconnection period.
- Run official diagnostics. Viasat’s My Viasat app offers a modem diagnostic. Other providers may expose signal, alignment, or network tests in their own apps and support portals.
- Contact customer care if the link remains down. Hughesnet advises calling Customer Care when service does not resume after weather clears. Use the current support page for the correct number or chat option for your region.
How to tell weather trouble from another failure
Signs that weather is still the likely explanation
- The outage began during intense rain, hail, snow, or a thunderstorm.
- Service returns briefly between heavy bands of precipitation.
- Your provider’s status page reports a weather-related network interruption.
- The equipment has normal power and no cable was disturbed.
Signs of a power, wiring, or equipment problem
- The modem remains dark after you test the outlet and power adapter.
- A coaxial or Ethernet connector is loose, damaged, or wet.
- The outage continues long after local conditions are clear and no provider outage is listed.
- The dish was moved, struck by debris, or covered by persistent ice.
- The provider’s diagnostic reports a hardware, alignment, or line-of-sight fault.
Do not realign a dish yourself unless the manufacturer explicitly provides a safe procedure for your equipment. Small changes in pointing can make the connection worse, and a technician may need to inspect the mount, cable run, or outdoor electronics.

Good details help the provider distinguish a temporary weather fade from a service or hardware fault. Before calling or opening a ticket, note:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- When the outage began and whether it is continuous or intermittent.
- The weather at your location and whether it has already cleared.
- Any outage message shown in the provider app or on its status page.
- Which modem, gateway, and router lights are lit, dark, or flashing.
- Whether you checked the outlet, power adapter, coax, and Ethernet connections.
- The exact restart procedure you followed and how long you waited afterward.
- Any visible snow, ice, debris, water, or physical movement near the dish that can be reported without approaching an unsafe area.
Keep the account number, service address, and equipment model available. Provider instructions can change by plan, hardware generation, and country, so confirm the current steps in the provider’s app or support site rather than relying on an old forum post.

Common mistakes that make an outage worse
- Climbing during or after a storm: A temporary internet outage is not worth a fall, lightning strike, or exposure to ice.
- Using sharp tools: Picks, chisels, and scrapers can damage the antenna surface or its protective coating.
- Unplugging everything repeatedly: Constant cycling does not restore a blocked link and can interrupt the modem’s normal registration process.
- Assuming clear skies prove the dish is fine: A remote gateway may still be in severe weather.
- Treating every provider the same: Reboot intervals, light meanings, apps, and escalation rules vary.
- Replacing unrelated computer software: A satellite-path or provider outage is not fixed by PC cleanup utilities or browser changes.
Prepare before the next storm
Preparation cannot prevent rain fade, but it can shorten the time spent diagnosing a problem.
- Install and sign in to your provider’s current app while you still have service.
- Bookmark the provider’s outage page and support page on a phone that can use cellular data.
- Save the modem model and the provider’s light guide with your household’s important information.
- Know which dish areas are safely reachable from ground level; plan never to climb onto a roof for routine snow removal.
- Keep outdoor access clear of stored items so a technician can work safely after conditions improve.
- Write down the normal light pattern and router arrangement so you can spot a change quickly.
When the connection should be treated as a service call
Contact the ISP when the weather has cleared, the provider shows no active outage, and one provider-approved restart plus the published diagnostics have not restored service. Also call sooner if the equipment has no power, a cable is visibly damaged, the dish has moved, or the provider’s app reports a hardware or alignment fault.
Support may confirm a gateway outage, schedule a technician, replace indoor equipment, repair cabling, or investigate line-of-sight obstructions. The key distinction is whether the signal is temporarily weakened by conditions that will pass or whether something remains wrong after the satellite path and local weather have returned to normal.
