First identify whether you have the original Oculus Rift (CV1), which uses external USB sensors, or a Rift S, whose “sensors can’t track headset” message is a different problem. For CV1, restart the PC and reconnect the sensor when setup reaches the sensor screen; if Windows itself does not detect it, troubleshoot the USB connection before changing Oculus setup. The Rift S workflow is separate.
Identify the headset and where recognition fails
“Sensor not recognized” can describe three different failures: Windows does not enumerate a USB sensor, Oculus setup does not accept a sensor Windows can see, or Rift S reports a tracking-check failure. These situations call for different steps. The instructions below distinguish the original Rift (CV1) from Rift S; do not apply CV1 external-sensor advice to Rift S.

- Windows-level failure: The sensor is absent in Device Manager or appears with an error. Start with its USB connection, port, cable, controller, and driver.
- Oculus setup failure: Windows sees the CV1 sensor, but setup does not. Try Oculus’s setup reconnect procedure.
- Rift S tracking failure: Follow the Rift S cable, room, privacy, and Device Manager checks below rather than treating it as a CV1 USB sensor problem.
Fix recognition problems with original Rift (CV1) sensors
1. Reconnect the sensor during setup
Oculus’s June 13, 2019 troubleshooting guide recommends restarting the PC, continuing setup until the sensor screen, unplugging the sensor, waiting a few moments, and reconnecting it. This is the most directly relevant recovery step when setup—not Windows—fails to recognize a CV1 sensor.

Oculus’s legacy guidance says to check that Rift and USB drivers are up to date and connect sensors to USB 3.0 ports. If several sensors are connected to USB 3.0, it suggests trying one on USB 2.0. Treat this as a diagnostic suggestion, not a universal port recipe: USB behavior and controller layouts differ between PCs.

For a sensor Windows does not detect, use Microsoft’s general Windows 10/11 USB troubleshooting guidance: disconnect and reconnect the device, try another PC port, remove an intermediate hub while testing, inspect the cable for damage, and update drivers when appropriate. These are Windows checks, not a Meta-specific repair.
3. Reduce USB contention and test one change at a time
Temporarily unplug nonessential USB devices, such as a webcam or microphone, to see whether recognition changes. Oculus also advises trying ports farther apart or separate USB controllers if multiple sensors share one controller. Make one change at a time and check both Device Manager and Oculus setup after each change; that helps locate whether the issue is Windows enumeration or setup recognition.

4. If Windows sees the sensor but setup still rejects it
Retry the restart-and-reconnect sequence at the sensor screen. If that does not work, contact Meta support with the headset model, Windows version, exact setup error, Device Manager status, and USB controller layout. The cited Oculus guide does not establish a universal current app repair, driver reset, registry edit, or forced driver substitution for this specific CV1 failure. Avoid unverified registry changes and third-party driver tools.

5. Consider another USB controller only after free checks
If testing points to controller sharing or limited USB capacity, a separate controller may be worth considering. Oculus’s guide mentions separate USB controllers; a PCIe USB 3.0 expansion card is one possible way to add ports on another controller, but compatibility and effectiveness depend on the PC and card. The available sources do not establish any particular card as a proven fix.

Use a separate workflow for Rift S tracking checks
Rift S does not use the same external-sensor setup as CV1. For the “sensors can’t track headset” check, a Meta Community Manager advised reseating the USB cable at both the computer and headset, restarting the computer, and checking the room’s lighting and visual contrast. The manager wrote: “Texture is also a factor with tracking. If there is not enough contrast between objects in the room, this could lead to tracking issues.” See the Meta Community Forums thread.
The same response suggests enabling Windows camera access under Privacy > Camera, disconnecting and reconnecting the headset cables, then opening Device Manager, removing listed Rift S sensor entries under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and scanning for hardware changes. Windows menu names may differ by version. The thread’s original poster reported that the suggested steps did not resolve the issue, so these are troubleshooting checks, not guaranteed fixes.

Keep sensor placement separate from USB recognition
Placement affects tracking coverage, not whether Windows enumerates a sensor over USB. Oculus’s June 2019 setup guidance gives these distances for the original Rift:
| CV1 setup | Oculus Support Center guidance (2019) |
|---|---|
| Two sensors | Place them 3 to 6.5 feet (1 to 2 meters) in front of the wearer. |
| Three sensors | Place the front two 3 to 9 feet (1 to 2.7 meters) in front of the wearer; keep the rear sensor no more than 14 feet (4.3 meters) from the farthest front sensor. |
| More than three sensors | Oculus said this may not work with the PC or play area and recommended using three; this is a dated setup recommendation, not a current compatibility guarantee. |
If the sensor is missing from Windows, resolve the USB detection issue before adjusting tracking layout.

When the checks do not help
Record the model, Windows version, exact error or setup screen, whether Device Manager lists the sensor and any error code, ports and hubs tested, and whether other USB devices were disconnected. Share those details with Meta support. The sources cover legacy CV1 troubleshooting and a separate Rift S community response; they do not establish that a particular port, card, driver action, or reinstall will solve every current PC configuration.
