First identify where the mismatch appears: on the item listing, in the cart or checkout estimate, or on the final receipt or card charge. Check the exact product and package, the retailer’s online-pricing policy, and any weight, coupon, substitution, tax, or fee adjustments. Save screenshots and the itemized receipt, then report a listing problem through the item details or an order problem through the retailer’s or platform’s support flow. An online price is not necessarily the same as the shelf price, and a mistaken listing is not automatically guaranteed to be honored.
Identify which price is wrong
Separate a catalog issue from a changing estimate or a disputed final charge. The distinction helps you gather the right evidence and choose the right support route.

- Item listing: The product description, size, or displayed price appears incorrect before you order. This is a catalog-information issue.
- Cart or checkout estimate: The total changes before you place the order, or the estimate differs from what you expected. Check the line items and disclosures before treating the change as an error.
- Final receipt or card charge: The amount charged after fulfillment differs from the checkout amount or itemized receipt. Compare the final item prices, quantities, actual weights, taxes, and fees, and ask support for an itemized explanation.
Check the comparison before reporting it
Compare like with like, then look for disclosed reasons the online and in-store amounts may differ.

- Product and package: Confirm brand, size, count, and package type. A different pack size can look like a price change; compare unit prices where available.
- Online versus shelf price: Retailers set their own marketplace pricing policies. Instacart says some retailers offer everyday store prices while others may set different online prices, and some in-store promotions may not apply. To find the policy on Instacart, open the retailer’s storefront and select its pricing-policy link. Instacart pricing and promotions.
- Weight: Produce, meat, seafood, and other variable-weight items may be priced using an estimate. Instacart says the final receipt adjusts when actual weight differs from the requested or displayed amount. FreshDirect says certain perishable-item cart prices are estimates and the final charge uses actual weight and the displayed per-unit price. - Substitutions: Check whether the shopper replaced the selected item and whether the replacement’s size or price changed. Kroger says substitutions are generally added at the original item’s price, with an exception for Fry’s Food; do not assume another retailer follows the same rule. Kroger Terms of Use.
- Coupons, promotions, and taxes: Verify that the offer applied to the exact item, order, location, and timing. Kroger lists coupons, substitutions, taxes, weighted items, and price updates among reasons a final price may change. Kroger Terms of Use.
- Store, fulfillment, and delivery timing: Online prices can vary with the selected store or fulfillment location, delivery day, promotions, and digital coupons. Check which location and delivery slot the order uses rather than relying on a price seen for another store or time.
- Fees: Separate an item-price complaint from a delivery or service-fee question. Compare fee descriptions, when they appeared, whether they were optional, and what was disclosed before purchase.
Document what you saw and what you paid
Capture the evidence before a listing or cart changes. Include enough detail for support to locate the transaction and reproduce the discrepancy.

- Screenshot the item listing, including product name, size or count, and displayed price.
- Save the relevant pricing-policy disclosure and checkout total.
- Keep substitution notices, coupon details, and any displayed or final weight.
- Save the final itemized receipt and note the amount actually charged.
- In your support request, give the order number, order date, exact product and package, displayed and charged amounts, and any weight or promotion details that explain the difference.
Report the issue through the right route
If the catalog listing looks wrong
Use the item’s reporting option if the app offers one. In Instacart, open the item details, select “Incorrect Info?”, then choose the relevant problem option. Other services may use different labels or provide no item-level report, so follow the retailer’s own app or website instructions. Instacart pricing and promotions.
If an order has already been fulfilled
Open the order’s support or issue-reporting flow and select the item, substitution, or charge problem that matches what happened. Instacart accepts reports about incorrect items and poor replacements through its app or website. Ask for a specific explanation and outcome
State the amount shown, the amount charged, and what you believe caused the difference. Ask for an itemized explanation and, as appropriate, correction, refund, credit, or cancellation under that service’s terms. If the retailer says the item was incorrectly priced, ask what it will do with the order; do not assume every service must sell it at the displayed amount.
Know what pricing-error policies do—and do not—promise
Retailer and platform terms can allow corrections or cancellations. Instacart says it may cancel an order, including when an item was incorrectly priced, and refund the amount paid if it cancels. FreshDirect says it may cancel an incorrectly listed item because of a system or human error and notify the customer. A price difference by itself does not establish that a listing was deceptive or that the price must be honored. Keep the listing, disclosures, receipt, and support case number. If you believe a charge was unauthorized or support does not resolve a potentially misleading practice, use the consumer-protection channel applicable where you live. In the United States, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov for fraud, scams, and bad business practices; it is not a substitute for location-specific advice about an individual order.

In April 2026, the FTC sought public comment on whether a rule was needed to address unfair or deceptive fee practices in online food and grocery delivery. The agency identified topics including total price, fees and charges, variable or contingent fees, store-price differences, personalized pricing, promotions, extra payments, and unauthorized billing. The FTC comment page listed May 18, 2026, as the deadline and now says comments are closed. That inquiry is not evidence that a final nationwide rule has taken effect.
