If Gemini misses an email, gives a misleading summary, or appears to apply the wrong label, first identify which Gmail feature produced the result. Search Gmail itself and check the original message or thread before relying on Gemini’s answer. Settings for short summaries in the inbox do not fix every side-panel search or conversation overview.
Identify which Gmail feature got it wrong
“Gemini in Gmail” can mean different things, and each has different access rules and controls:

- Gemini side panel: answers questions about Gmail or helps find messages.
- AI Overview: a summary shown at the top of an open conversation or above search results.
- Inbox message summary: a short summary beneath a message’s subject in the inbox.
- Label action: a request to organize messages, which may involve applying a Gmail label.
Determine which one failed before changing settings. Google documents the features separately in its Gmail Gemini capabilities guide, feature availability information, and inbox summary instructions.
Check whether your account can use that feature
Availability varies by feature, account type or plan, language, platform, geography, and rollout. A Gemini feature that works in one part of Gmail does not establish that another is available on the same account. Check Google’s current Gemini features in Gmail availability page for the exact feature and account. Google says availability is gradually expanding, so access details can change.

Language support also differs by feature. Google lists supported languages for the side panel and separately for AI Overview conversation summaries; do not assume that support for one means support for all Gmail Gemini experiences. See Google’s Gmail Gemini language information.
When Gemini can’t find an email
Confirm the message is in Gmail
Search Gmail directly first. Use a sender, date range, subject, or distinctive phrase to establish whether the message is present and to locate the relevant thread. Gmail’s search results are the record to verify; Gemini is a helper, not a substitute for checking the inbox.

Make the Gemini request more specific
Try asking for messages from a named sender during a particular date range, or for unread messages. Adding a subject or distinctive detail can help narrow what you mean. Google’s Gmail Gemini guide includes examples of these kinds of searches.
When a summary is wrong or incomplete
Compare it with the original conversation
Open the full thread and inspect the actual messages, especially the latest replies. A short overview can leave out context or fail to reflect a later update. For decisions, deadlines, or other consequential details, use the original messages rather than acting on a summary alone.

Ask a narrower question, then report persistent errors
Try a focused request, such as “List the decisions and action items in this thread,” or ask about a specific message. If the result remains inaccurate, use the feedback control beneath it. Google’s help describes a Bad suggestion option that lets you identify the issue and add feedback.
Google warns: “Gemini features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information.” If you submit feedback, do not include personal, sensitive, or confidential information; Google notes that enterprise end users are informed not to include it.

If short summaries are missing from the inbox
Google’s documented display guidance applies specifically to short message summaries in the Gmail inbox on Android. The page says these summaries may appear for some messages but not others. Check the following conditions:

- Use an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.
- Enable Google Workspace smart features.
- Turn on Conversation view.
- Set conversation-list density to Default or Comfortable; Compact density prevents these summaries from appearing.
See Google’s instructions for Gemini summaries in the Gmail inbox. These are display conditions for inbox summaries, not a universal fix for side-panel searches or every AI Overview.

When Gemini leaves out suspicious email content
An omission can be a security safeguard rather than a display problem. Google says that if Gemini detects content associated with a potential prompt-injection attack, it may exclude that content—or sometimes use none of the message content to generate a response. Do not follow suspicious instructions or links in an email to try to make Gemini process it. If the message appears deceptive, report it as phishing in Gmail. Google explains this behavior in its guidance on prompt-injection risks.
If Gemini applies or reports the wrong label
First distinguish an incorrect statement about a label from an actual change to the message. Check the message in Gmail and inspect its current labels. Google documents label-related organization actions in limited contexts and tells users to review the confirmation card or matched messages before confirming. If the wrong label was applied, correct it on the message in Gmail; the guidance does not promise automatic correction of a mistaken label. See Google’s Gmail Gemini capabilities guide.
