If the price of your flight rises after you book, you generally do not owe the higher fare: a higher price shown to new customers is not usually a change to your completed ticket. If you spot a lower fare instead, you are not automatically entitled to the difference. Whether you can cancel, rebook, get a refund, or receive credit depends on your booking channel, ticket rules, airline policy, and the net cost of switching.
First, check what actually changed
Compare the receipt or ticket confirmation with the new price. If the airline is asking you to pay more for a ticket purchase that was already completed, that is different from a higher fare appearing in a fresh search. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says a completed ticket purchase generally cannot be increased afterward, except for a limited increase in a government-imposed tax or fee when it was disclosed and you consented. If only the price for new bookings has gone up, your existing ticket and that new fare are separate transactions. You ordinarily keep the ticket you bought under its terms; the new fare does not by itself change what you paid.
If the fare dropped, check whether you can cancel within 24 hours
For a ticket bought from an airline at least seven days before departure, U.S. rules require the airline to offer either a full-refund cancellation option within 24 hours of purchase or a 24-hour hold at the quoted price without payment. The airline does not have to offer both. If it took payment with the reservation, it must let you cancel for a full refund during the applicable 24-hour window.

This is a cancellation-and-refund option or a hold—not a right to change your ticket for free. The federal requirement does not apply when you book through a travel agent or online travel agency (OTA); an agent may offer a similar policy voluntarily. Check the specific booking terms and contact the seller promptly. DOT notes that cancelling and rebooking “may be cheaper” than paying a change fee and fare difference, but warns that prices can change quickly. Read its air travel consumer guidance for the details.
Outside the 24-hour window, compare the real cost of switching
There is no general right to an automatic refund of the difference when a fare falls after purchase. Your options depend on the ticket’s fare rules and the carrier’s policy. A change may involve a fee, the difference between the old and new fares, or both; cancelling may return money to your original payment method, provide a credit, or produce a different outcome under the ticket terms.

Before making a change, check these details in the airline’s change or cancellation flow and in your ticket-specific fare rules:
- Whether the ticket can be changed or cancelled, and any applicable fee or penalty.
- The fare difference and the total cost of the replacement ticket—not just the lower advertised fare.
- Whether any remaining value is refunded to your original payment method or issued as airline credit.
- Any credit expiry date, eligible routes, passenger restrictions, or other use conditions.
- Whether the replacement itinerary matches the original in dates, airports, cabin, and other terms that matter to you.
- Whether the lower fare is still available when you are ready to book the replacement.
Airline policies vary by fare and carrier. For example, Delta’s cancellation policy says it does not offer a post-24-hour price adjustment unless the customer bought a refundable fare. That is Delta’s policy, not a rule for every airline; consult the terms attached to your own ticket.

Use this sequence before cancelling
- Confirm the new fare. Make sure it is available for the same or genuinely comparable itinerary, and check the full price and conditions.
- Identify the seller. Check whether you booked directly with the airline or through an agent or OTA. The seller may control cancellation and refund processing.
- Check the deadline. Note when you bought the ticket and when departure is. If the U.S. 24-hour option may apply, verify eligibility and act within the window.
- Read the ticket rules. Use the fare rules or the airline’s change/cancel flow to find the fee, fare difference, refund or credit amount, expiry, and restrictions.
- Compare the net result. Weigh the replacement fare against fees and any value you would lose. Do not cancel until you understand what happens to the existing ticket and have confirmed the new fare is still available.
- Contact the issuer if needed. If an agent issued the ticket, ask that agent about cancellation or refund handling rather than assuming the airline can process it directly.
Do not confuse a fare drop with an airline disruption
A market price change is not the same as the airline cancelling your flight or significantly changing its schedule. DOT describes separate refund rights when an airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and you reject the alternative it offers. If that happens, check the applicable rules at DOT’s airline refund page. A lower fare for a different booking alone does not establish that disruption-related refund right.
