Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If an app or device stopped working after you disabled a Windows service, restore that service’s startup type first, then try starting it. Don’t set an unknown service to Automatic by default: use its previous setting if you know it, or check the guidance for that specific service. A service set to Disabled cannot be started until its startup type changes, as Microsoft explains in its error 1058 guidance.
If you are asking, “I disabled a Windows service and now my app won’t work—what should I do?”, start with the one service you changed. Avoid changing other services while you are trying to confirm whether restoring this one fixes the problem.

Restore the service you disabled
Start with the service you actually changed rather than adjusting other services that might sound related. If you know its previous startup setting, restore that setting. If you do not, avoid guessing: Windows services and driver services can use different start types, and services may depend on other services. Microsoft’s service database documentation describes these distinctions.
Keep in mind that the Startup type and the current service status are different things. Startup type controls how the service is configured to start; the status tells you whether it is running now. If the startup type is Disabled, Windows will not start the service until you change that configuration. Changing the setting makes a start attempt possible, but does not guarantee that the app or device will work or that the service itself has no other problem.

Use the Services console
- Press
Windows+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter to open Services. - Find the service you disabled. Check its name carefully; similar display names can refer to different services. If you are uncertain which entry you changed, pause rather than selecting a service based only on a similar-sounding name.
- Right-click the service and choose Properties. On the General tab, check Startup type.
- If the startup type is Disabled, choose the service’s known previous setting. If you do not know it, select an appropriate non-disabled setting only after checking documentation for that specific service; do not treat Automatic as a universal fix.
- Select Apply, then select Start if the button is available. Select OK to close the dialog.
- Retry the app or device function that failed. If Windows reports an error, note its exact wording and number.
Microsoft’s error 1058 instructions say to choose a startup option other than Disabled and then try to start the service. That restores the ability to attempt a start; it does not establish that every service should use the same startup setting. If you have a record of the setting before the change, use that rather than choosing a new setting by trial and error.
Test the same function that first failed—for example, the particular app feature or device operation—not just whether the service appears to run. If the test succeeds, you have a useful indication that restoring the service addressed the symptom. If it does not, keep the service name and any error message handy for the next checks instead of changing several other startup types.
Re-enable a service with PowerShell
PowerShell is useful when you know the service’s internal name or need to inspect its start mode. Open an elevated PowerShell session if Windows says administrator privileges are required. Service control generally requires elevation for administrators, and Microsoft’s Start-Service documentation shows how to inspect a service’s start mode, change a disabled service to Manual in its example, and attempt to start it.

Get-CimInstance Win32_Service -Filter "Name='ExampleService'" | Select-Object Name, StartMode, State
The results let you check which service the name refers to, its configured start mode, and its current state. They do not tell you what setting is best for every machine or prove that this service is the only cause of the app or device failure. Compare the displayed service name with the service you intended to restore before running a change command.
Change a disabled service and attempt to start it
If you have confirmed that Manual is the appropriate setting for the service, use:
Set-Service -Name "ExampleService" -StartupType Manual
Start-Service -Name "ExampleService"
Manual is the setting in Microsoft’s documented example, not a recommendation for every service. Restore the documented or previously recorded setting for your particular service. If a command returns an access, dependency, or service-specific error, keep the complete message; don’t move on to changing unrelated services.
If the command reports that the service cannot be started, check whether you changed the right service and whether Windows still reports its start mode as Disabled. A dependency or other service-specific condition may also be involved. Record the exact error rather than assuming that repeatedly issuing Start-Service will solve it.
If the service starts but the app or device still fails
A successful service start does not prove that it was the only cause. The app may rely on a separate service, driver, package, or permission, and a dependency may itself be unavailable. Re-test the precise function that failed—for example, the affected device operation or app feature—rather than relying only on the service’s Running status.

Also note whether the failure is limited to one app or device or whether Windows startup and multiple functions are affected. A narrow symptom points to a different investigation than a broad startup problem, but the symptom alone is not enough to identify a particular service or configuration. Do not infer a service default from the app’s name or the timing alone.

Check the relevant Windows events
- Open Start, search for Event Viewer, and launch it.
- Review Windows Logs > System for service, driver, or startup-related events, and Windows Logs > Application for app-related events.
- Focus on entries recorded at the time the problem occurred. Record the event source, event ID, timestamp, and full message; these details can distinguish a service start failure from an app or driver problem.
Microsoft’s Windows startup troubleshooting guidance points to Event Viewer’s System and Application logs when investigating broader startup issues. Look for entries near the time the failure occurred, but treat them as diagnostic clues: the presence of an event does not, by itself, prove that the service you disabled caused it.
If asking for help, include the service name, Windows version, exact error, whether the problem began immediately after disabling the service, and relevant event details. Include whether Windows still boots and whether the problem affects one app or device or broader startup. These details help someone distinguish a known single-service change from a separate driver, app, or dependency issue.
For Microsoft Store and inbox apps
Don’t assume a Windows service is the sole cause of a Store or built-in app problem. Microsoft’s specialist troubleshooting guidance for modern, inbox, and Microsoft Store apps also covers app registration, package integrity, permissions, and event logs. It is written for support agents and IT professionals; general users are directed to Windows app repair guidance.
In other words, if restoring the service does not restore the app, continue with app-specific repair guidance rather than making additional service changes based only on the fact that the problem appeared after the service was disabled.

If Windows startup is affected
If Windows still loads, first use the specific service recovery above when you know what you changed. If startup remains impaired or the cause is unclear, Safe Mode and event-log review may help with diagnosis. Microsoft’s System Configuration troubleshooting guide describes a clean-start investigation that tests services individually. Treat this as an escalation method, not the first step for a known, single-service change.
The next step depends on the scope of the problem. If you know the service and can open Windows normally, restore that service and retest first. If Windows starts but the cause is unclear or several functions are affected, event review and a carefully controlled diagnostic process may be appropriate. If Windows will not boot, the correct recovery steps depend on the error and the system configuration; do not assume an app-service fix applies to a boot failure.
Use a clean start as a diagnostic, not a permanent configuration
A clean start can help isolate whether a background service is involved, but changing many services at once can make it harder to identify the original cause. Microsoft warns that this procedure may disable core Microsoft functions and advises returning System Configuration to Normal startup after isolation. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s guide for your Windows version and keep track of every change so you can restore the prior configuration.
Test services individually as the guide describes; do not leave the computer in a diagnostic configuration as if it were a recommended permanent setting. If you already know the one service you disabled, a clean start adds unnecessary variables before you have tried restoring that specific service.

Avoid risky fixes based on a guess
- Don’t set every disabled service to Automatic. Startup types differ by service and driver, and dependencies matter. Use the known prior setting or service-specific guidance.
- Don’t edit the registry as a generic repair. Microsoft warns, “Don’t directly edit the registry unless there’s no other alternative.” Its per-user services documentation also notes that these services vary across Windows versions. Incorrect registry changes can cause serious or unrecoverable errors.
- Don’t disable driver services or edit offline registry hives based only on an app symptom. Startup failures and driver-filter changes carry additional risks, and the right procedure depends on the error and system configuration.
- Don’t assume a clean start or a restart will fix the underlying issue. These can be diagnostic steps, but they do not identify the correct setting for an unknown service.
Be especially cautious with per-user services and driver services. Per-user service behavior varies across Windows versions, and the appropriate handling can depend on the Windows version and configuration. If the service falls into one of these categories, avoid copying a generic registry value or a startup setting from a different computer.

Choose the next step based on what you know
- Windows boots, service name and prior setting are known: restore that setting in Services, try Start, and retest the affected function.
- Windows boots, service name is known but its prior setting is not: inspect it in Services or with PowerShell, then consult documentation for that service rather than guessing.
- The service starts but one app or device still fails: review relevant System and Application events and investigate app, driver, or dependency issues.
- Startup is broadly affected or the culprit is unclear: use Microsoft’s boot troubleshooting guidance and consider Safe Mode or a carefully tracked clean-start investigation.
- The service is per-user or a driver service, or Windows will not boot: avoid generic registry edits or trial-and-error changes; seek help with the exact Windows version, error, and service details.
Windows service configurations differ by version and system, so the service name and the exact error matter more than a generic list of settings. If you cannot identify the correct service or safely restore its configuration, provide those details to a Windows support professional before changing other services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start a Windows service while its startup type is Disabled?
No. Microsoft explains that a service or driver service set to Disabled cannot be started. Change its startup type to an appropriate non-disabled setting first, then try to start it. Use the setting recorded before the change or service-specific documentation rather than guessing.
Should I change a disabled service to Automatic?
Not automatically. Services and driver services can have different start types and dependencies. Restore the previous setting if known; otherwise, check documentation for that particular service. Microsoft’s PowerShell example uses Manual for its example, not as a universal setting.
What if I re-enable the service but the app or device still does not work?
Retest the affected function, then review the relevant System and Application events around the time of the failure. A dependency, driver, package, permission, or separate app issue may be involved. Save the service name, Windows version, exact error, and event details before asking for help.
What should I do if Windows startup is affected?
If Windows still loads, use the specific service recovery first if you know what changed. For broader or unclear startup trouble, Microsoft’s guidance discusses Safe Mode, Event Viewer, and a clean-start investigation. A clean start is diagnostic and should be returned to Normal startup afterward; if Windows will not boot, seek guidance for the exact error and configuration.
Is it safe to fix a disabled service by editing the registry?
Do not use registry edits as a generic fix. Microsoft cautions against direct registry editing unless there is no other alternative, and per-user services vary across Windows versions. Driver and boot-related changes can carry additional risk, so get service- and system-specific guidance.
The Bottom Line
When disabling a Windows service breaks an app or device, start by restoring the specific service’s previous or documented startup type and trying to start it. Retest the affected function; if it still fails, use event details and the scope of the problem to guide the next investigation. Don’t guess at Automatic, change unrelated services, or use registry edits as a shortcut.
