A failed cloud-GPU request usually means one of two different things: your project is over its quota, or the provider has no matching hardware available in the zone and configuration you selected. The fix depends on which error you have. A quota increase can address a permission limit, but it will not create physical capacity in an exhausted resource pool.
Read the complete API or console message first, then work through the least disruptive options: retry later, change zone or region, reduce the GPU or instance request, and try another provisioning model. If the workload has a deadline, investigate a reservation early. If it can tolerate interruption, Spot or another flexible-capacity option may start sooner, but only if the job is designed to resume safely.

First determine whether this is quota or capacity
Do not treat every failed GPU request as a quota problem. Cloud providers use separate controls for how much resource an account is allowed to consume and whether a matching physical pool is available at a particular moment.

A quota error says the project, account, region or GPU family is not permitted to use more of the resource. Google Cloud may enforce model-specific and region-specific GPU quotas, along with a global GPU limit. Typical wording includes “quota exceeded” or “insufficient quota.” The remedy is to identify the exact quota dimension, remove unused allocations or request an increase for the correct scope. Requesting a regional quota increase will not fix a different model quota or a global limit.

Capacity errors
A capacity error means the requested resource is not currently available in the selected location and configuration. Google Cloud’s documented example is: “A compute instance with the GPU that you requested is currently unavailable in the zone you requested it in.” The related error may appear as ZONE_RESOURCE_POOL_EXHAUSTED or a message that the GPU is currently unavailable in the zone.
Google Cloud states that resource-availability errors are not related to quota. In this case, raising quota alone is unlikely to help; you need to change when, where or how you request the GPU.
Record the details before changing anything
- Provider and service, such as Compute Engine, GKE or EC2.
- GPU model, GPU count, machine or instance type, and attached accelerator settings.
- Exact region and zone, plus the requested start time.
- Provisioning model: on-demand, reserved, Spot, Flex-start or another option.
- Full error text, request ID and timestamp.
- Whether the workload can use a different GPU, region, start time or interruption-prone instance.
These details prevent a trial-and-error loop and give support enough information to check the right inventory pool.
Use this recovery sequence, from least to most disruptive
-
Retry after a short delay
Capacity changes as other customers start and stop workloads. A later retry can succeed without any configuration change. Use exponential backoff rather than sending a tight loop of requests, which can create avoidable API errors and does not reserve capacity.
-
Try another zone or region
Choose a location where the exact GPU and machine family are supported, then submit a new request. A provider’s location matrix only shows where a type is offered; it does not prove that spare inventory exists now. Check data-residency, network-egress and latency requirements before moving a job.
-
Reduce the request
If the application permits it, request fewer GPUs, fewer instances or a smaller machine configuration. A distributed training job may be able to start with fewer workers, while a batch queue can process smaller groups. Document any change to throughput, memory or completion time so that a temporary workaround does not become an unnoticed production regression.

Choose a compatible configuration
Changing the machine family or accelerator generation can open a different resource pool. Confirm that the replacement has enough GPU memory, interconnect capability, driver support and framework compatibility. A nominally similar GPU is not interchangeable if your model depends on a particular memory size or collective-communication feature.

Change the provisioning model
If on-demand capacity is unavailable, evaluate a reservation, future reservation, Spot or Flex-start option. The trade-off is between start-time certainty, price, interruption risk and configuration flexibility; the next sections explain those choices.
-
Contact support after the basic checks
Include the exact resource type, zone, timestamp, error, quota status and the alternatives you already tried. For recurring demand, discuss planned reservations or contracted capacity before the next deadline rather than escalating each failed request individually.
Match the provisioning model to your deadline and interruption tolerance
No provisioning option guarantees every GPU request. Select one according to how quickly the job must start and how costly a stop or restart would be.
| Option | Best fit | What it changes | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-demand | Steady workloads that can wait for ordinary placement | Requests capacity without a long-term reservation commitment | Placement still depends on live inventory in the selected location. |
| On-demand reservation | Production jobs that need planned capacity | Reserves eligible GPU capacity for a defined configuration | Eligibility, quota, billing and release terms vary; reservation periods can be charged at standard rates. |
| Future reservation | A known workload start date | Requests capacity in advance for an eligible future period | Google Cloud requires sufficient quota both when the request is submitted and when the reservation starts. |
| Spot | Batch, experiments and training that can pause or restart | Uses spare capacity as it becomes available | Capacity is not guaranteed and instances can be preempted. GKE documents a 30-second warning for Spot VMs. |
| Flex-start | Jobs with a flexible start and limited allocation duration | May open a different capacity pool than standard requests | It remains subject to capacity and has a limited allocation duration, so the job must fit that window. |
| AWS Capacity Block | Scheduled GPU work over a fixed future window | Reserves eligible EC2 GPU compute for a selected date and period | Only listed instance types, regions and periods qualify; it does not provide immediate capacity for an arbitrary request. |
When a reservation is worth investigating
Start early when a training run, launch event or recurring batch has a fixed date. Verify the exact GPU family, count, region, machine type, quota, reservation start and end, billing window and release rules. Google Cloud’s reservation products differ by GPU family and provisioning model, so eligibility for one accelerator does not establish eligibility for another. AWS Capacity Blocks likewise have a published set of instance and region combinations.

When interruptible capacity is appropriate
Spot and similar flexible options suit jobs that can wait, restart or run in pieces. Google Cloud supplies Spot capacity as it becomes available and may preempt it. AWS advises waiting, expanding the set of Availability Zones and diversifying instance types when Spot capacity is unavailable.
Do not move a non-resumable production job to Spot merely to bypass an on-demand failure. The engineering work required to checkpoint, restore and validate output can outweigh any savings or faster initial placement.
Provider-specific actions
Google Cloud
For a Compute Engine resource-availability error, Google’s documented sequence is to retry later, try another zone or region, change the machine configuration or GPU count, and consider Flex-start or Spot. For eligible GPU types, on-demand and future reservations can provide planned capacity.

Check quota separately. GPU quotas can be specific to a model, region or global allocation. A request that passes quota checks can still fail because the zone’s resource pool is empty. Google’s troubleshooting page was updated on 2026-10-09 UTC; use the current console and API labels when confirming the applicable quota and reservation products.
AWS
For insufficient Spot capacity, AWS recommends waiting, expanding Availability Zones and diversifying instance types. Keep the alternatives within your application’s memory, networking and driver requirements; listing an incompatible instance does not make it a useful fallback.
AWS Capacity Blocks are designed for GPU compute on a future date and fixed period. Confirm that the desired instance type, region and dates are listed as eligible before designing around the block. A Capacity Block is a scheduled reservation, not a general-purpose way to obtain any GPU immediately.

Azure
Azure’s general reservation troubleshooting distinguishes regional demand and capacity restrictions from quota restrictions. That guidance does not establish a GPU-specific recovery procedure. For an Azure GPU failure, inspect the exact VM, region and quota message in the portal or API and confirm GPU-specific availability with Azure support before assuming that a reservation product will solve it.
Make the workload safe to interrupt
Capacity workarounds only help if a stopped job can resume without corrupting data or discarding days of computation.
Checkpoint training state
Save model weights, optimizer state, scheduler state, random-number-generator state and the current data position at a useful interval. The right interval depends on checkpoint time and the amount of work you can afford to repeat. A checkpoint that takes 10 minutes but protects only 30 seconds of work is inefficient; one taken once per day may lose too much progress when a preemption occurs.
NVIDIA DGX Cloud Lepton states that checkpointing is the user’s responsibility for training workloads. A preempted job can lose progress when no user-managed checkpoint exists, so do not assume the platform will create a usable training snapshot.
Keep durable data off ephemeral disks
Store checkpoints, source data, logs and completed outputs in persistent object or block storage that survives instance replacement. Google warns that GPU instance maintenance can stop an instance and that data on attached Local SSD is lost when the instance stops. Treat local disks as scratch space for caches and temporary shards, not as the only copy of a result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA portable external SSD can help move or back up checkpoints during a migration, but it does not increase cloud GPU capacity. For active jobs, persistent cloud storage is often more practical because it can be mounted or copied from multiple regions and workers.

Automate restore and retry
- Write checkpoints atomically, using a temporary object followed by a completion marker.
- Keep the latest known-good checkpoint as well as an older fallback.
- On restart, verify that the checkpoint is complete before loading it.
- Make the job discover the newest valid checkpoint automatically.
- Record the software image, driver, dependency versions and configuration with each checkpoint.
- Use idempotent output paths so a retry does not silently duplicate or overwrite valid results.
Test the restore path on a small run before relying on interruptible capacity for a long training job.
Use a decision framework instead of chasing every available GPU
Evaluate each fallback against the same seven questions:
- Start time: Can the job start minutes from now, later today or on a planned date?
- Configuration flexibility: Can you change GPU model, count, machine family or region?
- Assurance: Is the option a best-effort request, a reservation or a fixed capacity window?
- Interruption cost: How much compute and engineering effort are lost if the instance stops?
- Idle exposure: Does the option impose a minimum duration or charges while the GPU is unused?
- Data movement: Can data legally and economically move to another region or provider?
- Operational effort: Can your image, drivers, scheduler and checkpoint code support multiple GPU types?
| Workload | Usually prioritize | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Deadline-bound production inference or training | Reservation or contracted capacity, with a tested fallback region | Predictable placement and recovery are generally more valuable than a lower best-effort price. |
| Scheduled batch processing | Future reservation or Capacity Block if eligible | The start date and run window are known in advance. |
| Experiments and hyperparameter searches | Spot, Flex-start or smaller parallel requests | Jobs can be spread across attempts and resumed after interruption. |
| Interactive development | Retry, alternate zone and a compatible smaller GPU | Reducing the request may restore access without reservation overhead. |
Prevent the next capacity incident
Keep a short capacity plan with approved GPU alternatives, supported regions, maximum acceptable start delay and the data-residency boundary. Pre-build images and dependency locks for each approved GPU family. Store checkpoints in a location accessible from those alternatives, and periodically exercise a restore in the backup region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Monitor both quota consumption and placement failures. A rising quota percentage calls for quota planning; repeated resource-pool errors call for earlier reservations, broader location choices or a redesigned workload. These signals are different and should go to different owners.
For recurring demand, contact the provider before the date you need compute. Ask for confirmation of the exact GPU type, region, count and time window rather than a general statement that “GPU capacity” is available. Live inventory, pricing, eligibility and reservation terms can change, so revalidate them before committing a production schedule.
When cloud capacity remains unreliable
If the same workload repeatedly misses its start window despite quota and location changes, compare the operational cost of a longer-term alternative. An on-premises GPU workstation or server removes dependence on a provider’s live pool but introduces hardware acquisition, power, cooling, maintenance and replacement responsibilities. The right choice depends on utilization, security, data movement and the expected life of the workload; the capacity error alone is not enough to justify a purchase.
For an immediate incident, preserve the current checkpoint, keep the failed request details, and move through the recovery sequence rather than repeatedly submitting an unchanged request. That approach separates a permission problem from a full resource pool and gives you a defensible basis for choosing a reservation, a flexible instance or a different operating model.
