What to Do When Apple Pay Won’t Add or Verify Your Card

Check card, device, region, and account eligibility, then follow your issuer’s verification steps. Learn where to turn for common Apple Pay errors and Apple security restrictions.

If Apple Pay won’t add your card or you can’t complete verification, first check that the specific card, device, region, and account meet Apple Pay requirements. Then follow the verification method offered by your bank or card issuer. Apple directs common Wallet errors such as “Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” and “Card Device Limit” to the issuer; a security restriction in Wallet follows a separate Apple-managed review process.

Check eligibility before trying again

Apple Pay eligibility depends on more than whether your bank participates. The particular card must be eligible, and your device, software, country or region, and account security settings must meet Apple’s requirements. Check Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for adding a card and confirm card-specific eligibility with your issuer.

  • Confirm that Apple Pay is available in your country or region and that your device is supported.
  • Update the device to the latest available software.
  • Set up a device passcode or the applicable biometric authentication, such as Face ID or Touch ID.
  • Make sure two-factor authentication is enabled for your Apple Account.
  • Ask the issuer whether the exact card—not just the bank—is eligible for Apple Pay.

Rule out a service or connection problem

Apple recommends checking for service outages and connection problems when you can’t add a card. Check your internet connection and Apple’s System Status. If a relevant service or your connection is unavailable, wait until it is working and try again. This can address a temporary problem, but it will not resolve an issuer’s decision about card eligibility or verification.

Complete verification with your bank or card issuer

The issuer, not Apple, verifies your card. In Wallet, follow the on-screen instructions. Depending on the issuer, verification may use a text message, security questions, confirmation in the issuer’s app, a request for additional information, or a prompt to download an app. Apple explains the available setup routes in its Apple Pay setup instructions.

  1. Open Wallet and choose the option to add a card, or start the process in the issuer’s app if it offers that option.
  2. Enter or confirm the requested card details, then select the verification method shown by the issuer.
  3. Complete the issuer’s steps. If no method appears, a code does not arrive, or verification is rejected, contact the issuer using the number on the card or the support option in its app.

When you contact the issuer, ask whether that exact card can be added to Apple Pay and what verification step remains. If you receive a verification code unexpectedly, do not share it with anyone who contacts you; use only the bank’s official app or support channel.

Who to contact for each Wallet message

What you see or experience Who handles it What to do
“Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “Card Device Limit” Your bank or card issuer Contact the issuer and ask it to check the card’s eligibility, status, and any device limit. Apple says it does not approve or decline cards for Apple Pay.
No verification option, missing code, or rejected verification Your bank or card issuer Ask which verification method is available and what information or action is still required.
Wallet says payment cards cannot be added for security reasons Apple Follow the security-review route from the affected device, described below.
A purchase is declined after the card has been added Your bank or card issuer Ask the issuer about the declined transaction; purchase approval is separate from adding the card to Wallet.

If Apple restricts card addition for security reasons

A Wallet message that cards cannot be added for security reasons is different from an issuer verification failure. Apple describes this restriction as associated with unusual activity related to the Apple Account or device. If the affected device and software meet Apple’s current requirements, request a review from that device using Apple’s instructions for security restrictions on adding cards.

The request must be made on the affected device. For an Apple Watch, start the request in the Watch app on its paired iPhone. Apple manages the review; it may take a few days, and the outcome may restore the ability to add cards or permanently disable it. Check Apple’s current instructions for the required operating-system versions, since those requirements can change.

Use comparisons to narrow down the problem

If you have access to more than one eligible card or device, compare what happens without assuming that any route is guaranteed to work:

  • Same card, different eligible devices: Ask whether the issue follows the card or appears only on one device.
  • Different cards from the same issuer: Ask the issuer whether the affected card has different eligibility or verification requirements.
  • Issuer app versus Wallet: If the issuer offers Apple Pay setup in its app, compare the prompts with the direct Wallet flow.
  • Issuer error versus security message: Use the issuer for card-specific errors and verification; use Apple’s review process for a security restriction.

These comparisons can help identify the right support team, but they do not prove the cause. Card and issuer availability varies by market, so the issuer must confirm eligibility for the individual card.
