If another player eliminates your classic Fortnite bounty target, the bounty ends: older guides call this a “Bounty Poached” result. Those guides report a reduced Gold Bars reward and bounty-quest credit, but those details are season-specific and are not confirmed as current rules. A separate Rivalry Contract mechanic reported for Chapter 7 Season 2 works differently: the first player to reach the dropped contract claims the elimination.
First, check which message appeared
Read the match notification. “Bounty Poached” refers to the classic bounty outcome described in older guides. A message or marker referring to a “Rivalry Contract” points to the distinct Rivalry feature reported for Chapter 7 Season 2. Do not assume the two mechanics have the same rules or are available in every mode.

If it was a classic bounty
Treat the target as eliminated and that bounty as finished; there is no need to keep pursuing that target for the contract. Epic’s announcement for the original Season 5 bounty system described timed hunts and told players to track a target before someone else got the elimination. It also said the party would be rewarded when the target was eliminated or the hunter evaded capture. Those details describe the 2020 Season 5 system, not necessarily the current game: Epic’s Season 5 Bars and Bounties announcement.

If it was a Chapter 7 Season 2 Rivalry Contract
This reported feature uses a dropped item to determine who gets credit. Insider Gaming’s March 19, 2026 report says that when another player eliminated your Rival, a Rivalry Contract dropped. The first player to reach it received attribution for the elimination; if another player picked it up first, that player became your new Rival. See Insider Gaming’s Chapter 7 Season 2 report. This is season-specific secondary reporting, not an official Epic confirmation, so follow the contract and match notifications if the feature appears in your game.

- For a classic bounty, the target’s elimination ends that bounty. Verify any reward or quest progress in the match notice and tracker rather than relying on an older guide.
- For a Rivalry Contract, go to the dropped contract promptly if you want to claim the reported attribution; another player may reach it first.
- If no bounty or contract message appears, do not infer that a challenge counted. Check the active quest’s wording and progress display.
Epic defines an eliminated player as someone taken out of the game completely in its Fortnite glossary. Availability and behavior can vary by season and mode, so the notification shown in your match is the clearest immediate indicator.
