1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a school fee payment fails, your account is debited without a receipt, or the portal still shows the fee as unpaid, save the transaction details and check the status in your bank or payment app before paying again. A debit is not proof that the school’s fee ledger has been updated. Ask the school’s official fee office to check with its payment gateway and reconcile the payment first. The steps and RBI/NPCI rules below apply to payments in India; exact portal statuses and bank processing can differ.
First, preserve the payment details and avoid paying twice
- Save evidence from both sides. Capture the fee portal’s status and the debit or transaction entry in your bank or payment app. Record the transaction ID or reference number, date, amount, payment method, and student or fee-account identifier.
- Check the transaction status with the payment provider. A bank debit alone does not establish whether the school received confirmation or updated its ledger.
- If the payment is pending or successful but there is no school receipt, contact the official fee office or portal support. Give them the transaction reference and ask them to check with the payment gateway or acquirer and reconcile the fee before you try again.
- Keep recovery requests on official channels. Do not give an OTP, UPI PIN, or full card credentials to anyone offering unofficial help.
What failed, pending and successful statuses mean
Use the status shown by the bank or payment app alongside the school portal’s status. They describe different parts of the transaction: the payment provider records the payment attempt, while the school must receive confirmation and update its own fee record.

| Provider status | What to do |
|---|---|
| Failed, with a debit | Contact your bank or payment app with the transaction reference. For a failed UPI debit, NPCI says the money should be refunded; if it has not returned within one hour, contact bank customer support. NPCI’s UPI FAQ also describes a pending transaction caused by a beneficiary-bank delay that may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours. |
| Pending | Do not treat the fee as paid or failed based only on the portal. Check with the payment provider; if it is UPI and the pending status is due to a beneficiary-bank delay, NPCI says it may take up to 48 hours to reach the beneficiary. Ask the school to check the transaction before retrying. |
| Successful, but no receipt or the portal says unpaid | Send the reference to the school’s official fee office or portal support and request a check with its gateway or acquirer. Ask for confirmation that the fee has been reconciled before making another payment. |
NPCI’s FAQ says, “In case of failures money will be refunded back to your account,” and advises contacting bank customer support if the refund has not arrived within one hour. That is a prompt-contact recommendation; it is not the RBI’s separate outer limit and compensation rule for a specified UPI merchant-payment failure.
How long a UPI merchant-payment reversal can take
For a specific failure—your account is debited for a UPI merchant payment, but the merchant has not received transaction confirmation—the Reserve Bank of India’s September 20, 2019 framework sets auto-reversal within T+5 days. Here, T is the calendar date of the transaction. If reversal takes longer than T+5, the framework provides compensation of ₹100 per day of delay. RBI describes the prescribed turnaround time as “the outer limit for resolution of failed transactions” and says applicable compensation should be credited automatically, without waiting for a complaint or claim. Read the RBI circular.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
That rule applies to the specified UPI merchant-payment failure; a school portal showing “unpaid” does not by itself establish that this is the failure type. Ask the bank or payment provider to identify the transaction status and applicable category. Contacting support promptly is sensible even where the applicable reversal framework provides a longer outer limit.
How to escalate if the payment is not resolved
- Raise a formal complaint with your bank or payment provider. Include the transaction reference and the evidence you saved, and keep the complaint reference number and response.
- For an NPCI-routed transaction, use NPCI’s complaint and status facility if needed. NPCI forwards complaints to the relevant member bank or institution; that institution is responsible for resolution. Open NPCI’s complaint facility.
- If the regulated provider’s response remains unsatisfactory, check whether you can approach the RBI Ombudsman. Review the current filing eligibility and instructions for the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. RBI says customers who do not receive redress under the failed-transaction turnaround framework can register a complaint under the scheme. See the RBI scheme instructions.
If the debit was not authorized by you
An unauthorized debit is different from a payment you deliberately initiated that failed or did not produce a receipt. Report unauthorized activity to your bank immediately and follow the RBI’s separate framework for customer protection in unauthorized electronic banking transactions: RBI customer-protection directions.

Do not apply another portal’s refund timeline to school fees
The Government of India’s National Treasury Portal (NTRP) tells users of that portal that a failed transaction may need to update to failed status and that a debited failed payment may take 7–10 working days to return to source. This guidance is specific to NTRP; it is not a school-fee refund estimate. NTRP guidance. School portals and gateways vary, and no universal school-fee receipt or reconciliation timetable is established here.
