First identify the exact iPad model and its installed iPadOS version, then check whether Apple offers an update for that device. Compare the resulting iPadOS version with the app’s minimum requirement in the App Store listing or the developer’s support information. If the iPad cannot reach that requirement, look only for alternatives the developer actually supports—such as a browser version or another device—before considering a replacement. Screen Time and Family Sharing can control a child’s access, but they cannot make an incompatible app run.
Why an app can stop working on an older iPad
Compatibility is determined by two specific facts: the iPad model and the app’s minimum operating-system requirement. An app may work on one iPad but not another, even when both devices look similar. The same model can also lose compatibility when its installed iPadOS version is below the version required by a newer app release.

Because no particular app or iPad model is identified here, there is no honest universal verdict such as “this iPad is too old.” The reliable answer comes from matching the device’s model and available iPadOS with the requirement shown by the app developer.

Check the iPad before changing anything
Find the model and installed iPadOS
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Record the Model Name and the iPadOS Version. Keep the model information exact; an entry such as an iPad generation or a cellular/Wi-Fi variant is more useful than the informal description “old iPad.”
Write these details down before troubleshooting. They are what the app developer or a support representative will need if the listing does not explain compatibility clearly.

Check whether an update is offered
- Return to Settings.
- Open General, then Software Update.
- Install an update only if Apple offers one for that iPad and the family is ready for the restart and installation time.
An update helps only when the iPad is eligible for it and the resulting iPadOS version meets the app’s minimum. A message saying that the iPad is up to date does not mean that it can run every current app; it means no newer version is being offered to that particular device.
Match the app’s requirement to the device
Read the current App Store listing
Open the app’s listing and look for its compatibility or requirements information. Note the minimum iPadOS version exactly as displayed. Compare it with the installed version, or with the version the Software Update screen says will be installed.
| What you find | What it means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The installed iPadOS meets or exceeds the app requirement | The operating-system version is not the obvious blocker. | Check the app’s update status, available storage, account restrictions and the developer’s troubleshooting steps. |
| An update is offered and would meet the requirement | The device may be able to run the app after updating. | Back up important data, install the offered update, restart if requested and try the app again. |
| No update is offered, and the installed version is below the requirement | The iPad cannot meet the stated minimum through Apple’s available update path. | Check developer-supported alternatives; do not expect parental-control changes to bypass the requirement. |
| The listing is unclear or unavailable | The compatibility claim is not established. | Use the developer’s own support page or contact route and provide the exact model and iPadOS version. |
When the listing does not answer the question
Use the developer’s support information rather than relying on a forum post, a store description copied elsewhere or a guess based on the app’s age. Ask three concrete questions: which iPadOS versions are supported, whether a browser edition exists, and which other device types are supported. Availability of any of these routes is app-specific and cannot be assumed.

If the iPad cannot meet the minimum requirement
Look for a developer-supported browser route
Some services provide a website that works in Safari or another supported browser. Do not treat a generic web page, an unofficial wrapper or a downloaded file as an equivalent. The developer should identify the browser route and any required features. Confirm whether the child’s account, progress, purchases and parental settings carry over before moving from the app to a website.
Check another supported device
The developer may support a newer iPad, an iPhone, a computer or another platform. Verify the exact operating-system requirement for that platform and whether the child can use the same account. “Works on mobile” is not specific enough to establish compatibility with a particular device.
Check whether a previously acquired version is offered
If the family previously downloaded the app with the same account, the account’s acquired-app history may sometimes present an older compatible download. Treat this only as a check, not a promise. Whether an older version is offered depends on the developer, the account and the device, and this route is not verified for any particular app here. If a download prompt appears, read it carefully and confirm that the version is legitimate and that the child’s data will remain available.

Do not weaken security to force an installation
A minimum-OS warning is not a reason to install an unverified package, change security settings or use an unofficial copy. Those workarounds can expose a child’s account and data and may not provide the app’s current safety controls or updates.
What Screen Time and Family Sharing can—and cannot—do
Apple’s family features are useful after you have established that the software is compatible. Screen Time can manage app access and requests, while Family Sharing and a child account help parents administer those controls. Age ratings and in-app controls are also useful when deciding whether an alternative app or access route is appropriate.
These features govern access; they do not change the iPadOS version, alter an app’s minimum requirement or convert an unsupported iPad into a supported one. Changing a child’s age, purchase approval, Family Sharing membership or Screen Time setting will therefore not bypass a compatibility warning.

Mixed-version families
Apple’s current family guidance describes a redesigned parental-control experience that requires specified current operating-system versions across the family group. If some family devices cannot update, Apple says the family can continue using the earlier Screen Time and parental-control version or adjust controls directly on the child’s device. Feature availability consequently varies with the iPadOS version on each device.
That fallback preserves access management; it does not solve the app’s software requirement. Keep the control decision and the compatibility decision separate: first determine whether the app can run, then decide how the child may use it.
When replacing the iPad makes sense
Replacement is a conditional fallback, not the first troubleshooting step. Consider it only after you know the app’s minimum iPadOS requirement and have confirmed that the existing iPad cannot reach it.

Verify the candidate model before buying
- Write down the app’s required minimum iPadOS version.
- For every candidate iPad, verify the model’s supported or available iPadOS range from Apple’s current device information.
- Confirm that the candidate can reach at least the app’s stated minimum, preferably with room for future app updates.
- Check storage, connectivity and the child’s needed accessories separately; none of these can compensate for an unsupported operating-system version.
- After purchase, update the iPad before signing the child in and installing the app.
Apple’s accessibility conformance report identifies an iPad (A16) running iPadOS 18, but that report alone does not prove that the device runs any particular child’s app. Use the app’s requirement and the candidate model’s current OS support together; do not treat a model name by itself as a compatibility guarantee.
| Replacement question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the model support the required iPadOS? | This is the deciding compatibility check. |
| Is the required version available now? | Advertised future support does not help if the app is needed immediately. |
| Will the model remain update-eligible? | A small margin above today’s minimum can reduce the risk of another immediate mismatch, although no future support period is guaranteed here. |
| Can the child use the same account and controls? | Account continuity and parental settings affect setup, even when the hardware is compatible. |
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the evidence. Record the exact model name and iPadOS version in Settings > General > About. Save the app name and the wording of any error.
- Check Apple’s update path. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Note whether an update is offered, unavailable or blocked by a device condition.
- Compare versions. Read the app’s current minimum iPadOS requirement in its App Store listing. Compare it with the installed or offered version, not with the iPad’s purchase date.
- Use the developer’s information. If the listing is unclear, consult the developer’s support page with the model and OS details.
- Test only supported alternatives. Check for a developer-provided browser edition or another supported device. Confirm account, progress and safety-feature behavior before moving the child.
- Check prior acquisition cautiously. If the family already obtained the app, look for an older compatible download under the same account. Stop if the option is not offered; do not force an installation.
- Set controls after compatibility is solved. Configure Screen Time, Family Sharing, age ratings and in-app controls for the route that actually works.
- Replace only with a verified match. Compare the app requirement with the exact candidate model’s supported iPadOS before spending money.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming all iPads of a similar size are equivalent: model generations have different update eligibility. Use the About screen’s exact model information.
- Updating without checking the app requirement: an available update may still be below the minimum. Compare both versions first.
- Confusing “up to date” with “compatible”: an iPad can be fully updated for its model and still be unable to install a newer app.
- Changing parental controls to fix compatibility: Screen Time and Family Sharing manage access, not operating-system support.
- Assuming a browser version exists: only the developer can establish that route and its limitations.
- Buying from a model label alone: verify the candidate’s OS support against the app’s requirement before purchase.
- Relying on an old download as a guarantee: an older version may not be offered for that account or device.
- Ignoring child safety during a workaround: review age ratings, account permissions and in-app controls on the replacement app, website or device.
What information to give the app developer
A precise support request gets a more useful answer than “the app will not work.” Include the iPad’s model name, installed iPadOS version, the app version if shown, the exact error message, whether the App Store listing displays a minimum OS, and whether Software Update offers anything newer. Ask whether the developer supports a browser, an older app build or another device, and whether the child’s account data transfers.
Do not send a child’s password or unnecessary personal information. A model name, OS version and error message are normally enough to establish the compatibility question.

Use a three-part test: identify the exact iPad, establish the newest iPadOS it can run, and compare that version with the app developer’s stated minimum. If the versions do not meet, parental controls cannot bridge the gap. Check only developer-supported browser or device alternatives, treat an older-download option as uncertain, and buy a replacement only after the exact model passes the same OS-requirement check.
