Then reseat and inspect the card, test it in another compatible device, and check its file system. Don’t format it until you have copied off any files you need: formatting erases the card.
1. Check whether the tablet supports the card
Not every Android tablet has a microSD slot, and a tablet that does have one may support only cards up to a particular capacity. Look up the exact model in its manual or specifications before changing the card. Samsung likewise notes that support and limits vary by device: Samsung’s microSD guidance.

Samsung’s published card categories list microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards up to 32 GB, and microSDXC cards over 32 GB up to 2 TB. Those are category figures, not a guarantee that your tablet accepts a card of any of those sizes. Check the tablet’s own maximum capacity.

2. Safely remove, inspect, and reseat the card
- If the card appears in the tablet’s storage settings, use the available unmount or eject option before removing it. Menu names vary with software version and manufacturer.
- Follow the tablet’s manual for its required power state, tray location, and removal method. If it uses a tray, locate the tray outline before using an ejector tool; do not push the tool into a microphone or speaker opening.
- Check the card and tray for visible damage or debris. If the card is dusty, Samsung UK advises gently wiping it with a soft cloth. Reinsert it carefully and check whether the tablet detects it.
Do not force a stuck card or tray. Samsung recommends service if either is stuck.

3. Cross-test the card to narrow down the cause
Try the card in another compatible phone or tablet, or in a computer using a built-in slot or an external card reader. A reader lets the computer access the card; it does not prove that the tablet supports it.
- The card is unreadable in multiple compatible devices: card damage becomes more likely. If you need the files, avoid formatting or repeated attempts that could overwrite data.
- The card works elsewhere: check the tablet’s capacity limit and file-system support, then consider whether the tablet’s slot or software is involved.
Cross-testing helps isolate the problem, but it cannot by itself prove whether the card or tablet is faulty. Samsung’s troubleshooting steps are in its SD card troubleshooting guide.

4. Check the file system—and protect files before formatting
File-system compatibility depends on the tablet model. For the Samsung Galaxy devices covered by its US support guidance, Samsung lists FAT32 or exFAT, with exFAT preferred, and identifies NTFS and APFS as incompatible. Use your own tablet’s documentation rather than treating Samsung’s guidance as universal.

That can matter if the card is used for large video files. Samsung also lists speed classes 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10; a faster-rated card will not overcome an unsupported capacity or file system.

Formatting deletes the card’s data. Copy off any readable files before formatting. If the tablet cannot format a card that is otherwise compatible, Samsung recommends the SD Association’s Memory Card Formatter for PC or Mac. Formatting may resolve a file-system problem, but it will not repair physical damage.
5. Check tablet software only after compatibility and card checks
If the card reads in another device and meets the tablet’s specifications, restart the tablet and check for a system software update. Samsung UK also describes using Safe mode—which disables third-party apps—to check whether an app may be contributing. The exact update and Safe mode steps vary by tablet, so follow its model-specific instructions. These checks cannot fix a damaged card or faulty reader.

6. Decide whether the card or tablet needs service
- If the card fails in several compatible devices, it may be damaged; consider replacing it, especially if you have already recovered any files you need.
- If multiple known-good cards that meet the tablet’s specifications fail in the same tablet, contact the manufacturer or a repair service to assess the slot.
- If the card or tray is physically stuck, stop trying to remove it and seek service rather than forcing it.
What to check if you need a replacement card
Match the replacement to the tablet’s supported capacity and required file system first. Then consider speed in light of how you use the card: Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video and says regular microSD or microSDHC may suffice for less demanding use. Confirm the tablet’s own capacity limit before choosing any card; a higher speed rating does not make an incompatible card work.
