Contain it before you investigate. Stop the affected run or disable the agent’s overbroad tool connection, then determine which identity, credentials, tools and resources it can reach. Remove functions and permissions the task does not require, revoke or rotate credentials if exposure or misuse is plausible, and restore access only through a dedicated agent identity, short-lived task-scoped credentials and backend-enforced approval gates.
Why excessive permissions are more than a prompt problem
An AI agent can have excessive agency in three different ways: it may expose more functionality than the task needs, hold broader permissions than the task needs, or be allowed to act with too little human supervision. OWASP’s guidance treats all three as security concerns.

A request described as “read-only” is not safe merely because the prompt says not to change anything. If the connector’s identity can write, delete, alter permissions or send external messages, a model error, prompt injection or compromised session can still trigger those actions. The authorization boundary must be enforced by the tool and its backend, not by instructions in the model context.
Excess can also be hidden behind downstream systems. An agent may appear to have one narrow tool, while that tool uses a service account with administrator privileges. Your first task is therefore to identify the effective permissions at every layer, not just the controls visible in the agent interface.

What to do first: contain the agent without destroying evidence
The exact controls differ by platform, but the sequence below is a safe starting point. Pausing an agent does not necessarily invalidate tokens or terminate other sessions, so treat suspension and credential revocation as separate actions.
- Stop the current run. Cancel queued work and disable the affected tool, connector or agent capability if the platform allows it. If you cannot isolate one capability, suspend the whole agent identity temporarily.
- Preserve relevant logs. Export or protect prompt, tool-call, identity and backend audit records before their normal expiry when feasible. Record timestamps, resource identifiers, action results and approval decisions.
- Assess whether a credential was exposed or misused. Look for unauthorized writes or deletes, permission changes, infrastructure operations, external communications and unusual access to sensitive resources.
- Revoke or rotate at-risk credentials. Invalidate tokens that may have been copied, logged or used outside the intended task. Issue replacements only after the permission scope has been corrected.
- Notify the owners of connected systems. An agent may have acted through a database, cloud account, repository, ticketing system or messaging service. Those owners can suspend sessions, review their own audit trails and apply local incident procedures.
Do not assume that an agent being “offline” proves that its old token is unusable. Active sessions, queued jobs, cached credentials or a second integration may continue to operate.
Map the agent’s effective access
Build a concrete inventory before deciding what to remove. The useful unit is not “the agent” alone; it is the combination of agent, initiating user, session, tool, downstream identity, credential and resource.
| Inventory item | Questions to answer | Evidence to capture |
|---|---|---|
| Agent identity | Is it a dedicated identity or a person’s account? Which tenant, project or environment does it belong to? | Identity name, owner, groups, roles and account status |
| Initiating user and task | Who started the run, and what business purpose and time window were authorized? | User ID, session ID, task description and timestamps |
| Tools and operations | Can the agent read, write, delete, execute code, fetch arbitrary URLs, send messages or manage permissions? | Tool definitions, operation names, parameters and enabled connectors |
| Downstream identity | Which service account, API key, role or delegated user does each tool use? | Credential type, scopes, roles, groups and delegation chain |
| Resources | Which repositories, records, buckets, hosts, mailboxes or environments are reachable? | Resource names, tenancy boundaries and allowlists |
| Recent activity | What calls were made, with what result, and did any call change state? | Immutable or exported tool and backend audit events |
Pay particular attention to wildcard scopes, organization-wide roles, production access, permission-management APIs and tools that accept arbitrary commands or destinations. A narrow label such as “file search” does not guarantee narrow behavior if its parameters permit any path or if the backend account can also modify files.

Reduce both functionality and permission scope
Least privilege has two dimensions. First reduce what the agent is capable of asking a tool to do; then reduce what the tool’s identity is allowed to do if such a request is made.
Replace general-purpose tools with specific operations
Prefer an operation such as “list invoices for customer ID” over an open-ended SQL console. Prefer a repository diff operation over a shell with unrestricted filesystem access. Prefer a fetcher limited to an approved set of domains and methods over arbitrary URL retrieval. Narrow operations reduce the consequences of an incorrect model decision and make authorization easier to review.
Separate read and write paths
Give analysis and retrieval tasks a read-only identity that cannot create, update, delete or change permissions. Use a separate write identity for tasks that genuinely need modification. Do not rely on a parameter such as read_only=true unless the backend independently enforces it.
Constrain resources and destinations
- Allow only the repositories, records, projects, hosts or buckets required for the task.
- Limit environments explicitly; development access should not silently include production.
- Restrict outbound messaging and network destinations to approved recipients or domains.
- Block permission-management, credential-management and infrastructure operations unless they are the stated purpose and separately approved.
- Reject unexpected parameters, path traversal, wildcard resource selectors and attempts to expand scope during a run.
OWASP’s Agentic AI guidance recommends addressing excessive functionality and excessive permissions together. Removing a dangerous function while leaving an administrator identity behind does not solve the underlying problem.

Use a dedicated identity and short-lived credentials
An agent should not operate with a developer’s personal token or a broad administrator credential. Create a distinct identity so that access can be scoped, audited, suspended and revoked without disabling a person’s account or hiding which actions were automated.
Bind authorization to both that agent identity and the initiating user or task. A valid agent token should not automatically authorize every user, resource or operation that the agent could ever perform. Issue credentials for the smallest practical duration and scope, and make expiry and revocation routine parts of the design rather than emergency-only controls.
- Use a separate identity for each agent or materially different workload.
- Grant only the operations and resources needed for the current task.
- Set an explicit expiry time; do not create a permanent token for convenience.
- Keep secrets out of prompts, conversation history and tool results.
- Record which user and task caused each credential to be issued and each call to be made.
- Revoke the credential when the task ends, the session is abandoned or misuse is suspected.
Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance and OWASP’s AI-agent guidance both support revocable identities, scoped access and auditable authorization. Neither implies that one universal token lifetime fits every platform; choose a duration appropriate to the task and risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPut approval gates in the trusted backend
Human approval is most valuable where an action changes security posture, affects many resources or is difficult to reverse. The approval check must occur in the tool or service that performs the action. A prompt telling the model to “ask first” is not an authorization control.

| Action category | Control to apply |
|---|---|
| Routine, read-only retrieval within an allowlist | Automatic policy check, scoped identity and complete logging |
| Creation or modification of ordinary records | Task-bound authorization, constrained parameters and reviewable audit event |
| Security configuration or permission changes | Explicit human approval before execution; show the exact proposed diff and target |
| Credential issuance, rotation or access expansion | Separate approval path, strong operator authentication and an expiry on the resulting grant |
| Irreversible, destructive or high-impact action | Stronger review, clear impact summary, narrow batch size and a recovery plan |
Approval should identify the user, task, target resources, operation, parameters and time limit. If any of those change materially, require a new decision rather than treating the original approval as a blanket permit.
OWASP’s Cornucopia Agentic AI AAI9 card states: “Agents must operate under the same change-management controls applied to human administrators, with additional automated guardrails appropriate to autonomous operation.” In practice, that means an agent should not bypass the organization’s existing change, review or separation-of-duties process simply because its request is generated by software.

Logging, review and recurrence prevention
Keep enough detail to reconstruct what happened without relying on a model’s summary. Useful records include the initiating user, agent identity, session and task identifiers, credential or authorization decision, tool name, operation, target resource, parameters, result, approval event and timestamp.
Best Value
Access reviews should cover the agent’s tools, downstream roles, resource allowlists, token-expiry settings and approval rules. OWASP guidance supports regular reviews, revocation practices and auditable tool-call logging, but it does not prescribe one universal review interval or retention period. Set those values according to your organization’s risk, regulatory duties and the expiry of relevant logs.
After an incident or near miss, compare the intended policy with the effective policy. Ask whether the failure came from an unnecessary tool, an overprivileged downstream identity, weak resource constraints, missing approval, excessive session duration or insufficient logging. Correct the control that allowed the action, not only the prompt that happened to request it.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Only editing the system prompt: move the restriction into backend authorization and tool schemas.
- Pausing without revoking: check active sessions, queued work and token validity separately.
- Removing a tool but keeping its administrator account: reduce the downstream identity’s roles and scopes.
- Using one identity for reads and writes: split identities and credentials so a read task cannot inherit write power.
- Granting a permanent token for convenience: issue a task-scoped credential with an explicit expiry.
- Approving a vague request: require the exact operation, target, parameters and impact before approval.
- Deleting logs during cleanup: preserve relevant records before normal retention removes them.
- Assuming “internal” means low risk: internal systems can still contain sensitive data or production controls.
A practical decision framework for choosing controls
When several designs seem possible, compare them on six dimensions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Scope granularity: Can you limit access by tool, operation, resource, user and session, or only at a broad account level?
- Duration and revocation: Does access expire automatically, and can operators revoke it quickly?
- Enforcement location: Is the rule enforced by a trusted backend, or merely described in the model prompt?
- Read/write separation: Are retrieval and mutation identities distinct?
- Approval strength: Are security-sensitive and irreversible actions gated by an appropriate human review?
- Audit quality: Can an investigator identify who authorized each call, what it targeted and what actually happened?
The strongest design is not necessarily the one with the fewest tools. It is the one that makes an unnecessary or unauthorized action impossible, limits the blast radius when a permitted action goes wrong, and leaves enough evidence to investigate.
When to treat the event as a security incident
Escalate through your organization’s incident process when you find evidence of unauthorized data access, writes or deletes, permission changes, credential use outside the expected task, external messages, production impact or an inability to determine what the agent did. The guidance available for AI agents does not define one universal incident-response playbook; use the procedures for the affected identity and connected systems, while preserving agent-specific tool and authorization records.
