Find the ZIP in Files and double-click it to view its contents; to unpack a group of files into a folder, right-click the folder and select Extract all. If that fails, use the error message and where the archive is stored to choose the right troubleshooting path.
Open a ZIP file with the Files app
- Open the Files app.
- In the sidebar, choose the location where the ZIP was saved, such as Downloads, another folder under My files, Google Drive, or a connected storage device.
- Find the ZIP file and double-click it. The archive opens in Files, where you can double-click an item to open it.
- To extract a group of zipped files into a folder, right-click the folder and select Extract all.

If the ZIP still won’t open
ChromeOS lists .zip and .rar among the compressed file types that work on Chromebooks. Before installing another app, check the file’s location and the exact message ChromeOS displays; the next step depends on whether the issue is the file type, storage device, or access policy. Google’s supported file types and external-device guidance covers these cases.
If ChromeOS says “Unknown file type”
Check the file extension and whether ChromeOS supports that type. If the message persists, Google recommends trying to save the file to Google Drive and opening it in a browser or web application. This is a documented fallback for an unknown file type; it does not establish why a particular ZIP failed to open.

If the ZIP is on an external drive or memory card
Treat the storage device as a separate troubleshooting branch. Google advises checking whether its filesystem is supported and making sure ChromeOS is up to date. Supported external-device filesystems include FAT variants, HFS+ (journaled HFS+ is read-only), ISO9660 (read-only), MTP, NTFS, and UDF (read-only).
If ChromeOS does not recognize the device, reformatting may be suggested, but formatting erases files on that device. Back up anything important before considering that step; do not format simply as a first attempt to open the ZIP.

If you are considering a file-system app
A third-party file-system app may help with an alternate storage service, but Google Play access is available only on some Chromebooks and may be restricted on work or school devices. Check device compatibility and, if the Chromebook is managed, ask the administrator what is allowed. Google’s Android app guidance explains Play Store availability and restrictions.
What to note before asking for help
If none of these paths works, record the exact error message, the file extension, and where the archive is stored. Those details help distinguish an unsupported type message from an external-device or policy issue. The official guidance establishes the normal ZIP workflow, but it does not identify the cause of a particular failed archive or give a universal maximum ZIP size.
