What to Do When a Windows 11 Print Queue Is Stuck on “Deleting”

If a Windows 11 print job will not leave the queue, work from cancellation to a Print Spooler restart, then clear spool files only if needed.

If a Windows 11 print job stays on “Deleting,” first cancel it from the printer’s queue. If it remains, restart the Print Spooler service; as a stronger step, stop the service and clear its pending spool files. The latter removes queued jobs, so use it only when you are ready to submit any wanted documents again.

1. Cancel the stuck job from Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the affected printer, then open its print queue.
  3. Cancel the job marked “Deleting.” If you want to clear the entire queue, cancel the other queued jobs as well.

Windows manages queued documents through the Print Spooler. When the service has a problem, jobs can remain in the queue and the printer may stop responding. A “Deleting” label alone does not establish the cause. Microsoft’s queue troubleshooting steps begin with canceling the job.

2. Restart the Print Spooler service

If the job does not disappear after cancellation, restart the service that manages print jobs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Find Print Spooler in the Services list.
  4. Right-click it and choose Restart.

After the service restarts, check the printer queue again. A spooler issue can leave documents queued or make a printer unresponsive, but restarting it is not a guaranteed fix for every stuck job. See Microsoft’s Print Spooler guidance.

3. Clear spool files if the job still remains

Use this step only if cancellation and a service restart did not clear the queue. It removes pending spool data, including other jobs waiting to print, so you may need to send wanted documents again.

  1. Open Services by pressing Windows key + R, entering services.msc, and pressing Enter.
  2. Right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop.
  3. In File Explorer, open C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERS.
  4. Delete the files inside the PRINTERS folder. Do not delete the folder itself or other files in System32.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.

Do not delete spool files while Print Spooler is running. Microsoft’s instructions for stuck print jobs specify stopping the service before clearing the folder, then starting it again.

4. If the queue clears but printing still fails

Clearing a stuck job does not fix every printer or connection problem. Continue with checks that address the printer itself:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Run the Windows 11 printer troubleshooter: Open the Get Help app and run its printer troubleshooter.
  • Check the printer’s status and connection: Make sure it is powered on, online, and connected to the computer or network as expected.
  • Check the driver: If the problem persists, get the current driver for your exact printer model from its manufacturer. Microsoft also lists removing and reinstalling the printer as a possible escalation.

These checks can help with separate connection, status, or driver problems; a stuck “Deleting” state by itself does not identify which, if any, is responsible. See Microsoft’s printer connection and printing guidance.
