If the purpose is unclear, choose the option that blocks access and continue without that feature if possible. You can change the decision later for that site without changing Chrome’s settings for every other website.
What the prompt means—and what it does not
A Chrome permission prompt means a site is asking to use a browser feature or access information, such as your location, camera, microphone, or notifications. The prompt identifies the requested capability; it does not certify that the website is safe. Decide based on whether the feature makes sense for your task and whether you trust the site.

For location access, Google Chrome Help advises: “Before you allow a site to use your location, check the site’s privacy policy.” Google’s location settings guidance explains how Chrome handles that permission.
Choose the permission that fits your task
- Allow: Use this when you trust the site and the feature is necessary—for example, camera and microphone access for a video call.
- Allow once or for this visit: If Chrome offers a limited-duration choice and you only need the feature temporarily, that limits the scope compared with ongoing access.
- Block or never allow: Choose this if the feature is unnecessary or the request is unexpected. Some site features may not work; a video call, for example, may not connect without camera or microphone access.
Available choices and their wording vary by permission and device. Choose from the options actually shown in your prompt. Chrome documents camera and microphone choices such as “Allow this time,” “Allow while visiting the site,” and “Never allow” in its camera and microphone instructions.

Change permission for one website
- Open the website in Chrome.
- Select the site-information icon beside the web address.
- Select Site settings.
- Change the permission you want to review. Chrome saves the change automatically; if you changed a preference, a reset option may be available.
A site-specific choice takes precedence over the general default, so you can allow one site without opening access for all sites. See Google Chrome Help’s site settings instructions.
Change a default permission for sites
On desktop Chrome, go to More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings, then choose a category such as Location, Camera, Microphone, or Notifications. From there, you can review sites that are allowed or blocked. Menu labels can vary by platform and Chrome version. Use the individual site settings above if you only want to change one website.

If the permission still does not work
Location
Chrome can ask before a site uses your location. If you allow it, Chrome says it sends information to Google Location Services to estimate your location, which Chrome can then share with the requesting site. Your computer’s system-level location setting can also prevent access even after you allow the site in Chrome. Check Chrome’s location instructions and your device’s location controls.
Camera or microphone
Check the permission for that site in Chrome and the computer’s privacy controls. The operating system may need to allow camera or microphone access as well. On a managed work or school computer, an administrator may control these settings. Google’s camera and microphone guidance covers browser and computer access.

Notifications
If a site’s messages are the problem, change its Notifications permission in Site settings. Chrome also offers quieter notification prompts: instead of an interrupting pop-up, a prompt may appear as a bell icon beside the address. Chrome may remove permissions for sites you have not visited in a while or sites it considers disruptive. See Google’s notification instructions.
Pop-ups that keep appearing
Pop-up windows and notification subscriptions are separate controls. Blocking pop-ups will not necessarily stop a site that has permission to send notifications; check that site’s Notifications setting too. Chrome also identifies malware as a possible cause of persistent pop-ups. Its pop-up guidance explains how to block or allow them.

Which setting should you change?

The right option depends on the feature you need, the site, and how long access is useful. Chrome and your device’s built-in privacy controls are the settings to use; you do not need to buy anything to change a website permission.
