Lane availability and alternate options vary by retailer and location, so confirm what is operating in that store rather than assuming a cashier or another service is available.
What to do first
- Look for an open staffed lane or an employee near the checkout area.
- Ask directly: “Is there a staffed register open, or can someone help me check out?”
- If no option is visible, ask the employee or manager on duty which register or checkout service is operating. Some retailers offer store-specific alternatives, but availability and eligibility vary.
- If you still cannot complete the purchase, ask for the manager on duty or contact the retailer’s customer-service channel. Note the store location and time if you plan to follow up.
Can you ask for a cashier?
Yes. You can ask whether a staffed register is open, but a cashier may not be available at every retailer or at every moment. For example, Walmart says shoppers who prefer a cashier can choose that option, and its Customer Host associates can direct customers to available registers and help with checkout. What if there is no open register?
Ask an employee or the manager on duty what checkout option is currently operating. A retailer may be able to provide direct employee assistance or offer a mobile or fulfillment alternative, but neither is guaranteed to be available or to complete the purchase in the same way at that location.
Retailer-specific alternatives
Walmart says Walmart+ members may use its mobile Scan & Go feature to scan items while shopping. Check whether it is offered at your store and whether you are eligible before relying on it. Walmart customer help

Target has described offering traditional staffed lanes alongside Express Self-Checkout, which it introduced in March 2024 with a 10-item limit at most of its nearly 2,000 stores. In a 2025 company report, Target said it had more than 25,600 staffed lanes and reported nearly 8% improvement in total transaction times following checkout changes. What if you need an accessible checkout?
Tell staff what barrier you are encountering and request an accessible staffed checkout or assistance. A direct request helps the store identify what you need without requiring you to make a legal argument at the register.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s 2018 settlement agreement with Stop & Shop required the company, under that agreement’s terms, to keep at least one staffed and one self-service accessible checkout aisle open during store hours at its stores. Do checkout rules vary by state?
They can, and proposed legislation is not the same as a law in effect. On May 21, 2026, the Rhode Island General Assembly reported that the Senate had passed bill 2026-S 2342Aaa, which would set a minimum staffed-checkout ratio in grocery stores with self-checkout.
