If a smart-home device is still showing that an update is downloading or installing, keep it powered and leave its Wi-Fi settings alone; do not restart it unless the manufacturer tells you to. Once the update has ended, check whether the problem affects one device or several, then work through power, app, network and hub checks before considering a reset.
First, check whether the update is still in progress
Look for an update message in the manufacturer’s app and check the device’s indicator lights or screen against its model-specific instructions. If it still identifies an update as active, do not unplug it, change network settings or restart it unless the manufacturer explicitly directs you to. Google Home and Nest Help says of updates for its speakers and displays: “Don’t unplug or change your Wi-Fi settings during this time.” TP-Link gives a similar warning for Kasa devices, and Roku cautions that restarting during an update can cause problems. See Google’s update guidance, TP-Link’s Kasa firmware guide and Roku’s smart-home firmware advice.

Timing depends on the product. Google says an update for the speaker and display models covered by its guidance typically takes up to 10 minutes; if one of those products has been updating for more than 20 minutes, Google provides a specific recovery sequence. Those timings are not general thresholds for smart-home devices. Follow the instructions for your own model rather than applying Google’s wait times to a camera, plug, thermostat or other product.
Work out whether the failure is isolated or widespread
Note which devices are affected and which app you use to control them. If one accessory is offline while other devices work, start with that accessory and its manufacturer’s app. If devices from multiple manufacturers have failed together, check shared parts of the control path: the phone, local Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, internet connection, hub or bridge, router, and any VPN or third-party security software.

Apple’s Home app guidance uses this distinction: problems limited to accessories from one manufacturer point toward that maker’s accessory or app, while problems across manufacturers warrant checking shared settings and infrastructure. Its article, published March 9, 2026, is available at Apple’s accessory troubleshooting page. A platform app such as Apple Home may also show a different status from the accessory maker’s own app, so check both when applicable.
Check power, app, network and hub
- Power: Confirm the device is receiving power and that its display or indicator matches the manufacturer’s description for normal operation. Do not use a power cycle as a substitute for waiting out an active update.
- Manufacturer’s app: Open the official app, check whether it can see the device, and look for its firmware status, error messages or service notices. Make sure the app is current.
- Network: Confirm that the phone and device are using the expected network and that Wi-Fi and internet service are working. If several devices are affected, consider whether the router or internet connection is the common point of failure.
- Hub or bridge: Check that any required home hub, bridge or gateway is online. An accessory can appear unreachable when the connection between it, the hub and the app is interrupted.
For a thermostat, “offline” in an app does not necessarily mean the thermostat itself has failed. Resideo’s US guidance describes possible breaks in the path between the app and device, including the cloud service, phone operating system, router or modem, and ISP equipment. That article was last updated May 12, 2023, so use it as an illustration of possible connection points rather than as a current diagnosis of any particular service: Resideo thermostat connection guidance.

Restart only after the update has ended
When the manufacturer’s app and device indicators no longer show an active update, follow the maker’s restart instructions for the affected product. If the symptom suggests a shared connection problem, restart related parts of the control path only as their manufacturers recommend. Depending on the setup, that may mean the app, phone, hub or bridge, or router. Check whether the device reconnects after each step rather than restarting everything at once; this helps show where the fault lies. Apple recommends checking the result as you work through its troubleshooting steps.

Save a reset and re-pair for last
If the update has finished and the device still fails in its own app after power and connection checks, a manufacturer-approved reset or removal and re-pair may be the next step. Before doing it, find the exact instructions for your model and make sure you can complete setup again. Have account credentials and any required setup information ready, and check how to restore schedules, preferences and automations. A factory reset can erase settings: Roku explicitly warns that its smart-home reset removes preferences and settings, which is why it treats reset as a last resort. Apple also advises following the accessory maker’s reset guidance rather than assuming one procedure fits all devices.

If the device controls a smart lock, alarm, heating system or another essential function, consult its manual and manufacturer-specific safety instructions before restarting or resetting it. Use a safe physical fallback—such as the product’s documented manual controls—if its smart function is unavailable. Do not rely on an app status alone to confirm that a safety- or security-critical function is working.

Contact the right support team
If the maker’s prescribed steps do not restore the device, contact the device manufacturer. If several products are failing together, or the maker identifies a network-path problem, contact the router or network-equipment provider or your internet service provider as well. When you get in touch, provide:
- Device model and, if available, serial number.
- Manufacturer’s app version and the device’s firmware version.
- When the update ran and when the unexpected behavior began.
- The exact error text and what the status light, screen or other indicator is doing.
- Whether other devices or manufacturers are affected, and which checks or restarts you have already tried.
Roku’s firmware guidance, TP-Link’s Kasa guide and Google’s speaker and display guidance each direct users toward maker-specific troubleshooting or support when the problem persists. Keep to the instructions for the affected device: a status light, update duration or reset sequence is meaningful only in the context of its model.
