What to Do When a Satellite Wildfire Alert May Be a False Alarm

A satellite wildfire alert is a thermal anomaly, not a confirmed incident. Learn how to read its time and footprint, check local updates, and respond safely.

A satellite wildfire alert marks a thermal anomaly detected from orbit; it does not confirm that an uncontrolled fire is burning at the pin. If you see smoke or flames, receive an evacuation notice, or face another immediate threat, follow local emergency instructions. If the map alert is your only signal, check when and where the sensor detected it, then compare it with current information from your local fire agency or emergency-management office.

Is a satellite fire alert a real fire?

Not necessarily. NASA LANCE FIRMS describes its map as satellite-derived active-fire and thermal-anomaly data and warns that detections have limited accuracy. Heat from agriculture or other sources can produce a thermal signal; the marker is not an official incident confirmation. NASA’s map carries the warning: “Do not use for the preservation of life or property.” NASA LANCE FIRMS Fire Map

Treat the alert as a reason to check current local information, not as a reason to dismiss danger or to make emergency decisions from the map alone.

What should I do if a wildfire alert may be wrong?

  1. Check for immediate danger. If you can see fire or smoke nearby, or an official alert tells you to act, follow local emergency instructions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Always follow instructions given by local emergency management officials.” CDC wildfire and smoke safety guidelines
  2. Read the detection details. Note the observation time, the sensor or data source shown, any confidence field, and the approximate mapped footprint. FIRMS fire-alert acquisition times are in UTC, so account for the time difference when comparing them with local reports. NASA FIRMS Fire Alert Notes
  3. Check local fire and emergency-management updates. Look for a current incident notice, evacuation information, or other update from the relevant local agency. A satellite detection and a local incident update are different kinds of information: the former is an observation, while local officials provide actionable instructions.
  4. Do not travel to the marker to investigate. The map location is an approximate sensor footprint, not a dispatch point or a precise ground location. Do not put yourself at risk trying to verify it.
  5. If it still appears questionable, contact the relevant local authority through its published channel. Use the local non-emergency or fire-reporting route when appropriate; reserve emergency services for immediate danger in line with local guidance. Include the map location and satellite observation time. Reporting routes vary by jurisdiction, and there is no single worldwide procedure.

How accurate are satellite wildfire maps?

A marker covers an approximate footprint

A marker does not mean every part of the displayed square is burning. NASA gives approximate pixel footprints of 1 km × 1 km for MODIS and 375 m × 375 m for VIIRS. These are sensor-scale areas, not exact fire boundaries or proof of a fire at a particular building. NASA LANCE FIRMS Fire Map

A confidence value is not ground verification

For MODIS, FIRMS provides a confidence field on a 0–100 scale. NASA calls this field experimental and cautions that its meaning can vary across regions. Do not read a score as a universal percentage chance that an uncontrolled wildfire exists; it is not confirmation from someone on the ground. NASA FIRMS Fire Alert Notes

Timing affects what you see

The alert records when a satellite observed a thermal anomaly, not necessarily what is happening at the location now. NASA says global FIRMS near-real-time data are generally available within three hours of observation, while U.S. and Canada detections are available in real time. This is service-level availability guidance, not a guarantee for a particular alert or a substitute for current local updates. NASA FIRMS service overview

Does a hotspot mean the whole area is on fire?

No. The marker represents an approximate sensor footprint. A thermal signal within it may come from a source other than an uncontrolled vegetation fire, and the whole pixel need not be burning. Nearby buildings, fields, or industrial activity can make local context important, but the map alone cannot identify the cause conclusively.

Can a satellite miss a wildfire?

Yes. A blank map does not establish that an area is safe. A fire may be missed between satellite passes or obscured by cloud, smoke, or tree canopy; MODIS can also miss fires that are too small or cool for its footprint. NASA describes these limitations in its FIRMS Fire Alert Notes. Use local official information and follow emergency instructions regardless of whether a hotspot appears on the map.
