Start by confirming that the cell is genuinely rechargeable and that your charger supports its chemistry and size. Then verify power, polarity, slot placement, contacts and any insulating packaging. Many products accept AA or AAA cells but do not charge them inside the device. Stop immediately if a cell becomes extremely hot, leaks, swells or is visibly damaged; replace cells whose runtime has substantially deteriorated.
Stop and check for a safety problem first
Do not keep experimenting with a cell that is leaking, swollen, cracked, corroded or otherwise damaged. Remove it from the charger and device, avoid contact with leaking material, and follow the battery and local waste-disposal instructions. VARTA’s consumer FAQ distinguishes ordinary charging warmth from extreme heat or bubbling on the label, which can indicate possible overcharging. Those symptoms are a reason to stop, not to try a longer charge.

Panasonic says an eneloop cell’s surface may reach 55 °C while charging in its specified system and that its chargers use temperature detection and control. That figure is manufacturer guidance for eneloop and its chargers, not a universal safe limit for every AA, AAA cell or charger. - Read both labels. The cell must be explicitly marked rechargeable. Its chemistry and physical size must be supported by the charger. A disposable alkaline AA or AAA must never be placed in a charger intended for rechargeable cells. Duracell warns that charging a battery not marked rechargeable can cause leakage or rupture. Panasonic also warns against charging eneloop with a Ni-Cd-only charger.
- Confirm the charger has power. Reseat the wall plug, USB lead or adapter, and try the outlet or power source with another known-good device if practical. A dark indicator can mean no input power rather than a bad battery.
- Check size, polarity and slot position. Follow the charger’s diagram for AA versus AAA and for the positive and negative ends. Some chargers require cells in a pair or in particular numbered slots; others charge slots independently. Do not assume that every bay works the same way.
- Look for shipping insulation. A new charger or charger-and-cell set can include an insulating tray or sheet. Panasonic identifies this packaging as a cause of apparent charging failure. Remove only packaging that the manual identifies as removable; never insert metal or improvised objects into a bay.
- Clean the electrical contacts gently. With the charger unplugged and the cells removed, wipe the cell terminals and charger contacts with tissue paper or a clean, dry cloth, as Panasonic advises. Do not scrape plating, bend spring contacts, apply liquid, or bridge the positive and negative terminals.
- Test methodically. If you have several compatible cells, try one known-good cell in the suspect slot, then try the suspect cell in another compatible slot or charger. A failure that follows the cell points toward the cell; a failure that stays with one bay points toward the charger. Do not use an incompatible charger merely as a test.
Make sure the device is supposed to charge AA or AAA cells
A battery compartment is not evidence of an internal charger. Many cameras, controllers, radios, toys and navigation products accept replaceable AA or AAA batteries only for power; the cells must be removed and charged in an external charger.
Garmin explains that most of its outdoor handheld units that accept AA batteries do not charge inserted cells. The company lists certain exceptions that charge a Garmin NiMH battery pack. Consult the manual for the exact model, not just the product family. If in-device charging is unsupported, remove the cells and use a compatible external charger. If the manual offers a battery-type setting, select the rechargeable or NiMH option only when you are actually using the specified rechargeable pack.
How to interpret charger lights and “no charge” behavior
Indicator colors and flashing patterns are not standardized. A solid light may mean charging on one model and full on another; a flashing light can indicate a fault, temperature pause or simply normal charging. Use the legend in the charger’s own manual rather than a generic online chart.

If the manual has separate indicators for each slot, compare the suspect cell with a known-good cell in the same bay. A charger that reports each slot independently can reveal whether one cell is open, reversed or failing while the others continue. If all indicators remain dark, revisit the power connection and packaging checks before blaming the cells.
A “bad battery” warning does not prove that the cell is permanently dead. Recheck chemistry, polarity and contacts, then test the cell in a charger designed for it. If the warning follows the same cell after those checks, replacement is safer than repeated charging attempts.
When the cell is old or has lost runtime
Rechargeable cells can eventually deliver much less runtime than when new. Panasonic recommends considering replacement when performance has decreased significantly after the basic charging checks. There is no single lifespan or cycle count that applies to every chemistry, device, charging current and storage history, so judge the cell by repeatable loss of useful runtime and by physical condition.

For equipment that uses two or more cells, replace the set together when practical. Duracell advises against mixing old and new batteries in the same equipment. A mismatched set can make the weaker cell empty first and can cause the device to shut down even though another cell still has charge. Marking cells by purchase date or keeping matched sets together helps you identify a consistently weak cell without guessing.

Most rechargeable AA and AAA troubleshooting concerns NiMH cells, but “AA” and “AAA” describe physical size, not chemistry. A charger designed for one chemistry is not automatically suitable for another. Read the exact chemistry marking on the cell (for example, NiMH) and match it to the charger’s specifications. Do not charge disposable alkaline cells, and do not use a Ni-Cd-only charger for NiMH cells.

As a concrete manufacturer specification, the Energizer Recharge Value Charger is described as supporting two or four AA or AAA NiMH cells, providing charging-status lights, a bad-battery indicator, overcharge protection and automatic shutoff. Energizer states a five-hour charging time for that product. Treat five hours as that model’s stated specification, not as a universal time for every charger or cell; actual instructions depend on the particular combination.

Why a “full” cell may still not power the device
The device needs a different battery type
Some equipment specifies a particular rechargeable pack, voltage, or chemistry even though the compartment resembles a standard AA or AAA holder. A loose cell of the wrong type can fit mechanically while failing electrically or confusing the device’s battery gauge. Follow the model-specific manual and use the stated pack or chemistry.
The cells are installed incorrectly
Recheck every polarity symbol in the device, especially when cells are arranged in alternating directions. A single reversed cell can prevent startup. Remove and reinstall the complete set rather than forcing a cell against a spring.

If a known-good, correctly charged set does not power the device, inspect the device’s contacts, battery-door interlock, external power switch and manual reset procedure. Do not keep charging the same cells to compensate for a fault in the equipment. If the device still fails with a verified set, its service instructions—not the charger—are the next step.

What not to do
- Do not charge cells that are not explicitly labeled rechargeable.
- Do not substitute a charger merely because its bays accept the same physical size.
- Do not scrape, sand, bend or short battery terminals.
- Do not continue charging through extreme heat, bubbling, leakage, swelling or other visible damage.
- Do not mix old and new cells in one multi-cell device.
- Do not infer internal charging capability from the presence of a USB port or a battery compartment; confirm it in the exact manual.
A practical decision tree
- Is the cell rechargeable and is its chemistry supported? If no or uncertain, stop and obtain the correct cell and charger.
- Does the charger receive power and show the expected indicator? If no, fix the power connection or consult the charger manual.
- Are polarity, slot placement and removable insulation correct? If not, correct them and retry.
- Are contacts clean and undamaged? Clean gently; replace equipment with damaged contacts.
- Does the device charge cells internally? If not, charge externally and reinstall the cells only after charging.
- Does the problem follow one cell or stay with one charger bay? Replace the failing cell or service the charger as indicated by the test.
- Has runtime substantially declined, or is there abnormal heat or damage? Replace the affected cell or set; do not continue charging a hazardous one.
