1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA new laptop that feels sluggish or unusually hot does not automatically have a hardware defect. Start with a restart, updates, and a check for apps using too many resources; make sure the laptop has clear airflow. If poor performance or abnormal heat continues after these basic checks—especially during light use—contact the seller or manufacturer promptly and review the return and warranty terms for your specific purchase.
First, tell normal warmth from a possible problem
Laptops can become warm during demanding work, such as running several applications at once. Warmth by itself is not proof of overheating or a defect. Apple says, “Your Mac laptop computer can get warm during normal use” in its guidance on acceptable operating temperatures. That guidance is specifically for Mac laptops; other manufacturers may have different designs and recommendations.

Pay attention to the conditions around the symptom. Does the laptop get warm only during demanding work, or also while idle or doing light tasks? Is a particular application keeping the processor busy? Is the laptop on a surface that might obstruct airflow? These observations help distinguish a temporary workload from a problem that merits support. The available guidance does not establish one temperature threshold that diagnoses overheating across all laptop models.

A brief period of warmth during demanding work is a different pattern from heat that persists while idle. Likewise, a fan that runs during heavy work is not the same clue as fans running for a long time when you are doing little. These patterns help you explain the issue to support; they do not, by themselves, prove a particular component has failed.

Try these reversible checks first
- Restart and retest. Save your work, restart the laptop, then open only the applications you need. Note whether it is still slow or hot during light use.
- Install available system updates. On Windows, check Windows Update and consider optional driver updates where appropriate. On a Mac, use the software-update guidance for your installed version of macOS. Restart again if an update requires it.
- Close unnecessary apps and tabs. A large number of open applications or browser tabs can consume memory and processor time. Close only what you recognize and do not need.
- Check airflow and placement. Use a stable work surface and avoid placing the laptop on bedding or a pillow. Keep objects off the keyboard. For Mac laptops, Apple recommends an ambient temperature between 50°F and 95°F (10°C and 35°C), good ventilation, and Apple-authorized power adapters. Follow the laptop maker’s instructions for other models. Do not insert anything into vents or open a new laptop to attempt a repair.
- Retest under the same conditions. If the laptop improves after closing an app, changing placement, or restarting, that is useful evidence about what was contributing to the symptom. If the problem persists during light work, continue with the checks for your operating system below.
These checks are deliberately low-risk: they do not require changing hardware or deleting unfamiliar system files. If you are unsure what a process or startup item does, leave it alone and ask the manufacturer or the software provider rather than ending it or disabling it at random.
Windows: identify what is using the laptop’s resources
Microsoft lists limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, and hardware limitations among possible reasons a Windows PC may run slowly. More than one factor can contribute, so a single symptom does not establish that a new laptop is defective. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends working through multiple checks.
A practical order is to restart and install available updates first, then inspect resource use, storage, and startup activity. If the problem remains, run a malware scan and check the health report. This order lets you see whether a simple change resolves the issue before moving to more involved diagnosis. You do not need to perform every step if the laptop returns to normal and the symptom does not recur.

Check CPU, memory, and disk activity
- Right-click the Start button and select Task Manager.
- Review the Processes view and the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns. A process using a lot of a resource may help explain why the laptop feels slow or warm.
- Close an application only if you recognize it and do not need it. Avoid ending unfamiliar Windows or security processes; if a program repeatedly appears to cause trouble, update it or seek support for that program instead.
- If the laptop is a Mac, use Activity Monitor and inspect CPU activity for a process creating significant load. Apple recommends this check when a Mac is warm without intensive work or its fans run for a long time.
Look for a process that stays busy while the laptop is slow or warm, rather than assuming that one momentary spike explains everything. If you close a familiar app and the symptoms ease, note the app’s name and whether the improvement lasts. If you cannot identify the process, do not terminate it just to test a theory; that information can be useful to support.
Review storage and startup activity
Low available storage can affect performance. In Windows, check Settings > System > Storage and remove files or applications you no longer need. Uninstall unused apps through Settings rather than deleting program folders by hand.

To review programs that launch automatically, open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Disable only items you recognize and do not need at startup; disabling an essential utility can affect device features. Microsoft also recommends limiting unnecessary background apps.
After changing startup activity, restart and see whether the laptop behaves differently. Avoid disabling every entry at once: a selective change makes it easier to identify whether a nonessential startup app was contributing, and reduces the chance of affecting a feature you rely on.

Run a malware scan and check the health report
If performance remains poor, run a scan with Windows Security. You can also open Windows Security > Device performance & health to see available recommendations about storage, battery, software, and system health. Microsoft notes that this health report may not be available on organization-managed devices. Its Device performance & health guidance explains the report.
The report is a place to review available recommendations, not a guarantee that it will identify every cause of slowness or heat. If your laptop is managed by a school or employer and you cannot access it, follow that organization’s support process rather than trying to bypass its settings.
Use a clean boot only to isolate a startup conflict
A clean boot can help determine whether a startup application or service is causing a conflict, but it is a diagnostic step—not a routine speed boost. Microsoft warns that functionality may temporarily be reduced during the process. Follow its clean boot instructions carefully, and return Windows to normal startup afterward.

Consider this only if basic checks suggest a startup conflict, such as symptoms that began after changing startup software or services. Because some functionality may be reduced during a clean boot, it is not the first step for every new, slow laptop. If you are not comfortable following the procedure and restoring normal startup, ask for help.
Know the Windows 10 support distinction
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Do not assume a Windows 10 device will continue receiving free security fixes; check Microsoft’s current guidance for the operating system installed on your laptop. The support status is separate from diagnosing a slow or warm computer.
Mac: check workload and follow Apple’s temperature guidance
If a Mac remains warm during light work or its fans run for a long time, inspect CPU activity in Activity Monitor for a process using significant resources. Quit an application only if you recognize it and do not need it, then see whether the behavior changes. Restarting may also help when an application or process is stuck.
Apple recommends using a stable work surface with good ventilation, avoiding a bed, pillow, or bedding, keeping objects off the keyboard, and using Apple-authorized power adapters. Apple also cautions against using third-party temperature apps to diagnose hardware issues. If operating-temperature concerns persist, Apple advises contacting Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider through its temperature guidance.
Apple’s guidance gives a recommended ambient temperature range of 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C). Keep in mind that this is Apple’s recommendation for Mac laptops, not a universal temperature specification for every brand. For another model, check its manufacturer’s placement and operating guidance.

Should you change the power mode or buy an accessory?
Windows Best performance mode
Windows’ Best performance power mode may be useful when maximum performance matters, but it is not an overheating fix. Microsoft says selecting Best performance increases power consumption; on laptops it drains the battery more quickly and may cause the device to run warmer. If heat is already the concern, do not treat this mode as a remedy.
Use it only with the tradeoff in mind: performance may be the priority for a particular task, while battery life and warmth may matter more at other times. Switching to this mode will not identify or resolve a high-load background process, restricted airflow, or a persistent fault.
An open laptop stand
An adjustable laptop stand is an optional workspace accessory if it helps you keep the computer on a stable, ventilated surface. Apple supports the ventilation principle for Mac laptops, but that does not prove a stand will lower internal temperatures or cure overheating. Follow the manufacturer’s placement guidance for your model.
Think of a stand as a workspace choice, not a repair or diagnostic tool. You do not need to buy an accessory before trying a stable surface with clear airflow, and available guidance does not establish a temperature reduction from using a stand.

Because the laptop is new, persistent poor performance or abnormal heat after basic checks is a reason to contact the seller or manufacturer promptly. This is especially important if the laptop becomes hot during idle or light use, fans run for long periods without demanding work, or the problem continues after a restart and available updates. For a Mac, Apple specifically advises contacting Apple or an authorized service provider if operating-temperature issues persist.

Before contacting support, note when the symptoms occur, which applications are open, whether the laptop is charging, what Task Manager or Activity Monitor shows, and what troubleshooting you have already tried. This gives support useful context without requiring you to open the laptop or attempt a repair. It is also helpful to report whether the issue happens at idle, only during demanding work, or after a particular app starts; whether airflow or placement was restricted; and whether the problem continued after updates and restart.
Check the return window and warranty terms tied to your particular purchase. Those terms depend on country, model, seller, and purchase date; there is no single return period or warranty duration that applies to every new laptop. If the seller’s return window may be close to ending, contact them promptly rather than waiting through extensive troubleshooting. For non-Apple laptops, use the manufacturer or seller named for your purchase; support routes and terms vary.
Choose the next step from the pattern
| What you observe | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| Slow only with many apps or tabs open | Close what you do not need, restart, then check CPU, memory, and disk activity if slowness remains. |
| Warm mainly during demanding work | Check placement and airflow, then compare behavior during lighter use. Warmth alone does not prove a fault. |
| Warm during light work or idle, or fans run for a long time | Check for a sustained high-load process. If the behavior persists, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. |
| Still slow after restart, updates, and basic checks | Review storage, startup activity, malware scan results, and the Windows health report where available; contact the seller or manufacturer if the problem continues. |
| Symptoms began after changing startup software or services | For a suspected Windows startup conflict, use Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure and restore normal startup afterward. |
| Improves after changing placement | Continue using a stable, ventilated surface and check the maker’s placement guidance; do not assume an accessory will cure a recurring issue. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for a new laptop to get warm?
It can be. Apple says Mac laptops can get warm during normal use, especially under workload. Warmth alone does not establish a defect. Check placement and compare whether it happens during demanding work versus idle or light use; manufacturer guidance varies by model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What should I check first if my new laptop is slow?
Restart and retest with only necessary apps open, install available updates, close unneeded apps and tabs, and check CPU, memory, and disk use. On Windows, also review available storage and startup apps; run a Windows Security scan if performance remains poor.
When should I contact the seller or manufacturer?
Contact them promptly if poor performance or abnormal heat persists after basic checks, particularly if the laptop is hot during light work or idle, or fans run for a long time without demanding work. Review the return and warranty terms for your specific purchase because they vary by country, seller, model, and purchase date.
Will Best performance mode or a laptop stand fix overheating?
No guaranteed fix is established. Microsoft says Best performance uses more power, drains a laptop battery faster, and may make it run warmer. An adjustable stand may help provide a stable, ventilated workspace, but available guidance does not show that it lowers internal temperatures or cures overheating.
The Bottom Line
Start with a restart, updates, resource-use checks, and clear airflow. Warmth during demanding work can be normal, but persistent heat or slowness during light use on a new laptop deserves prompt attention from the seller or manufacturer. Check the terms for your specific purchase and avoid opening the laptop or relying on a power mode or accessory as a fix.
