A notification is a prompt—not proof that a dose was missed or already taken. Check the prescription directions and dose history; if you still cannot tell what to do, contact a pharmacist or prescriber.
What should I do if a medication reminder goes off twice?
- Pause before taking a dose. Check the medicine name and which scheduled dose the alert refers to.
- Check the dose history. Look at your written or app-based log and consider what you remember. If someone else may have given the medicine, ask them before acting.
- If an extra dose may have been taken, get advice. Do not wait for symptoms or guess about the risk; the medicine, amount, timing, formulation, and person all matter.
- If a dose may have been missed, follow that medicine’s directions. Read the label or patient leaflet, or ask a pharmacist or prescriber. Do not take a double dose to catch up.
- After resolving the dose question, check the reminder settings. Compare the medicine name, schedule, active days, and alert settings with the current prescription directions. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure what the prescribed schedule is.
CDC advises following the label or a doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions. If you do not understand the directions, ask a pharmacist or doctor before taking the medicine.

What if I’m not sure whether I already took my medicine?
Do not use the alert alone to decide. Check your medication log and recollection, and confirm with any caregiver who may have administered the dose. If you still cannot establish whether or when to take it, contact a pharmacist or prescriber for medicine-specific advice rather than improvising.
If an extra or wrong dose may already have been taken, contact Poison Control in the United States through webPOISONCONTROL or by calling 1-800-222-1222. Poison Control says its expert help is free, confidential, and available around the clock. Outside the US, contact your local poison information service or emergency service. If the person is severely unwell or in immediate danger, seek emergency care. Keep the medicine container nearby and be ready to provide the medicine name, amount, time taken, and the person’s age and weight.

What should I do if a reminder arrives at the wrong time?
First settle whether the dose was taken and what the prescription says to do next. Then compare the reminder’s scheduled time and active days with the current directions. Check whether the medicine name or schedule was entered incorrectly, or whether the reminder app has its own follow-up behavior. If the prescription schedule itself is unclear, ask the pharmacist or prescriber before editing the app or changing when you take the medicine.

Apple Health is one example, not a rule for every app
Apple says its Health app can send a scheduled medication alert and a follow-up reminder if a dose has not been logged 30 minutes after the first notification. A dose can be logged as Taken or Skipped from the notification. A second alert therefore does not establish whether a dose was actually taken; check the log and what happened. Apple also says that after a time-zone change, users receive a notification to confirm medication schedule details. For other apps, consult their own instructions and settings rather than assuming they work the same way. See Apple’s instructions for adding and logging medications.

Use one clear dose record
Keep a medication log that records each dose, and make it accessible to everyone involved in administering medicines. Agree who is responsible for each dose, especially when caregivers share the task. Poison Control recommends discussing a suitable tracking system with a pharmacist or primary healthcare provider.

Consider an organizer only if it suits the medicines
A weekly pill organizer can make it easier to see whether a dose compartment is empty, but it is a tracking aid—not a dosing authority. Ask a pharmacist whether your medicines can safely be moved from their original packaging and whether the organizer’s compartments suit the schedule. NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service guidance notes that medicine stability should be considered before transferring medicines out of original packaging. Use child-resistant storage and keep medicines inaccessible to young children.
What should I not do after a possible missed dose?
- Do not take an extra or double dose just to make up for one that may have been missed.
- Do not independently stop or reduce ongoing treatment.
- Do not assume that a reminder proves a dose was missed, or that the absence of an alert proves it was taken.
Missed-dose instructions vary by medicine and circumstance. Use the medicine’s label or patient leaflet, and ask a pharmacist or prescriber when the instruction is unclear. NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service offers professional guidance on missed or delayed doses.

Why it is worth taking dose errors seriously
Poison Control reports that more than 361,000 people called US poison centers for help with a medication error in 2024. That figure is specific to the United States and that year, not a worldwide total. A reminder or tracking routine can help prevent confusion, but it cannot determine whether a particular dose is safe.
