Try pressing a keyboard key or clicking the mouse. If the Mac does not respond, check its power connection, disconnect accessories, then hold the power button for about 10 seconds, release it, and press it normally. If the Mac appears to be on, troubleshoot the monitor and its cable before forcing a shutdown.
Check whether the Mac or just the display is unresponsive
A sleeping Mac is still on, using less power than when it is active. Press a key on the keyboard or click the mouse or trackpad to try to wake it. [Apple’s wake instructions]

If the screen remains black, do not assume the Mac is off. Check whether the monitor’s power light is on and whether the display itself is turned on. Confirm that the video cable is firmly connected at both ends, and that the monitor is set to the input used by the Mac. Mac Studio has HDMI and Thunderbolt video-output ports; supported display connections vary by model. Check the documentation for your particular Mac Studio and monitor before choosing or replacing a cable. Check power, then restart with the power button
- Make sure the Mac Studio’s power cable is undamaged and securely connected to the computer and a working power outlet.
- If pressing the power button does not wake or start it, press and hold the button for about 10 seconds.
- Release the button, wait a moment, then press it once normally to turn the Mac on.
Holding the button forces the unresponsive Mac to shut down, so unsaved work may be lost. Use this only if the normal wake attempt has failed. Apple gives this procedure for a Mac that will not turn on. [Apple Support: If your Mac doesn’t turn on]

Disconnect accessories and retry
Unplug connected accessories such as external drives, hubs, printers, and mobile devices. Then try the power-button procedure again. If the Mac starts normally, reconnect devices one at a time; if the sleep or wake problem returns after connecting one, that device or its connection may be involved. Apple recommends this one-at-a-time approach when checking connected devices. [Apple’s sleep and wake troubleshooting guide] [Apple’s startup checks]
Skip the SMC reset on Mac Studio
Mac Studio models use Apple silicon. Apple says an SMC reset is not needed for a Mac with Apple silicon; its sleep-and-wake guidance is to restart the computer. If the Mac responds enough to restart through macOS, use the Apple menu and choose Restart. If it is completely unresponsive, use the power-button steps above instead. If the Mac starts but the screen stays blank
Once you have checked the display’s power, input, cable, and connection, treat a persistent blank screen as a startup problem rather than an ordinary wake failure. Apple’s blank-screen guidance includes starting in macOS Recovery. For an Apple silicon Mac that cannot start from Recovery, firmware revival or restoration may be needed; these are later escalation steps, not the first response to a single failed wake attempt. See Apple’s instructions for a Mac that won’t turn on or start up before proceeding.
Reduce the chance of another sleep or wake problem
- Update macOS. Apple recommends keeping the operating system up to date when investigating unexpected sleep or wake behavior. [Apple’s sleep and wake troubleshooting guide]
- Try safe mode. Apple recommends safe mode as a way to help determine whether software loaded during startup is involved. Follow Apple’s instructions for starting your specific Apple silicon Mac in safe mode in the sleep-and-wake guide.
- Review sleep settings. Check the available options in System Settings. On desktop Macs, Apple’s guide places options such as Wake for network access in Energy settings. The available settings and their labels can vary with macOS version and model.
- Check attached devices and background activity. USB or Thunderbolt accessories, sharing services, and background processes can affect sleep behavior. Disconnect accessories to test, then reconnect them individually to identify a possible cause. [Apple’s sleep and wake troubleshooting guide]
When to contact service
If the Mac Studio still will not turn on after checking its power connection and trying the accessory-disconnection and power-button steps, contact Apple Support or a qualified service provider. Apple notes that a Mac that remains unable to turn on may need service. [Apple Support: If your Mac doesn’t turn on]
