If a local AI model gives you generic or inaccurate job-application advice, give it the actual job requirements and the relevant facts from your experience, then require it to connect every suggestion to that evidence. Ask it to flag assumptions and missing information instead of filling gaps with invented qualifications. Treat the result as a draft: verify factual claims yourself before using them.
Why the advice may be generic or wrong
A request such as “help me improve my resume” leaves out the role, the employer’s requirements, and the experience the model can accurately use. Without those details, it has little basis for advice tailored to your application. Even with context, a language model can produce misleading information or state an error confidently; a more detailed prompt does not guarantee accuracy.

Official OpenAI prompt guidance recommends clear, specific instructions with sufficient context and iterative refinement. That is practical guidance for shaping a request, not evidence that a particular prompt improves hiring outcomes or works the same way across locally run models and versions. The reviewed material does not establish those effects.

Include the relevant parts of the job description and your resume, plus constraints that should shape the answer. You do not need to paste unrelated personal details. Tell the model what it may rely on: the experience and qualifications you actually supplied.
#1 Best Overall
- Role: the job title and organization, if relevant.
- Requirements: the specific duties, skills, and qualifications from the posting.
- Your evidence: relevant responsibilities, projects, credentials, and results from your real experience.
- Constraints: seniority, location, tone, length, or other facts and limits the draft must respect.
Ask for a requirement-to-evidence mapping: for each recommendation, identify the job requirement it addresses and the resume detail supporting it. If the model cannot point to both, it should omit the recommendation or label what information is missing. This applies general prompt-writing advice to job applications; it is not a tested employment intervention.
Use this prompt, then check the response
I am applying for [role] at [organization]. Here is the relevant job description: [paste text]. Here are the parts of my experience that are accurate and relevant: [paste resume details]. My constraints are [location, seniority, tone, length, or other requirements]. Identify the role’s most important requirements, then map each one to evidence I actually supplied. Suggest specific changes to my application and explain which requirement each change addresses. Do not invent experience, credentials, results, or employer facts. Clearly mark assumptions and missing information. If a suggestion cannot be supported by the material I supplied, say so. Give me the three highest-priority changes first.
Review whether the answer actually follows the requested evidence trail. For a vague response, use a focused follow-up:
Rank #2
Your answer is still too general. For each proposed change, quote the specific job requirement and identify the resume evidence it uses. If you cannot identify both, omit the recommendation.
OpenAI’s prompting guidance also supports refining a request over multiple turns and giving examples of the desired output when useful. For a task with several parts, ask for separate passes rather than one sprawling answer: identify the main requirements, match them to your experience, then draft revisions. Keep the requested output short and ranked if you need to decide what to edit first.
Troubleshoot by the failure you see
The suggestions could apply to anyone
Provide the actual role requirements and relevant resume evidence. Ask for each recommendation to name both the requirement and the supporting experience.
Rank #3
The model invents or overstates your qualifications
State plainly that it may use only the facts you supplied and must flag gaps. Check every factual claim before putting it in an application; model fluency is not proof.
The answer is an unfocused wall of suggestions
Ask for a short, prioritized list, or split the work into analysis and drafting. A narrower request makes it easier to see whether each suggestion addresses the job and your evidence.
It ignores an important instruction
Restate the instruction near the task, show a brief example of the format or level of specificity you want, and evaluate the answer against those criteria. A model may still fail to follow them.
It remains wrong after revisions
Do not keep polishing a claim you cannot verify. Check the job posting and your own records, treat unsupported wording as unusable, and try another model or a non-AI workflow if one is available. Prompt changes cannot ensure correctness.

Check statements about your own history against your records, and check external claims against reliable sources. Pay particular attention to dates, credentials, quantified results, employer facts, and any wording presented as a quote. OpenAI’s accuracy guidance warns that ChatGPT can be helpful but is not always right; the same general caution is sensible when reviewing model-generated text, without assuming every local model behaves identically.

Protect your application information
Before sharing resume or application materials with any tool, consider what personal information they contain and what privacy controls your particular local setup provides. The reviewed guidance does not establish the privacy properties of every local model or application. Share only the material needed for the task, and check the software’s own documentation for how prompts and files are handled.
