1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a fuel-price forecast misses, first check that it and the price you observed refer to the same fuel, grade, unit, place and time period. For a decision you must make now, use the latest local or regional observed price—not a forecast for a future period. Then consider what changed and revise future plans with a range or contingency rather than treating one estimate as certain.
Check whether the forecast and observed price are comparable
A forecast can appear wrong when it is being compared with a different measure or period. Before drawing a conclusion, line up the details:

- Fuel and grade: Compare gasoline with gasoline or diesel with diesel, and match the grade where the data allow.
- Price measure: A retail pump price is not the same as a wholesale price.
- Unit and geography: Check the unit and location. A national average is not a quote for a particular station or region.
- Time period and release: Match the forecast horizon to the later observation, and note which forecast release you are evaluating.
- Dollar basis and uncertainty: Establish whether values are nominal or inflation-adjusted, and whether the forecast was a point estimate or a range of scenarios.
For U.S. gasoline and diesel, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) distinguishes its forecast and observed-price products: its Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) provides monthly, quarterly and annual forecasts, while its Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update reports recent and historical prices by region, grade and formulation. See EIA’s Gasoline prices and outlook page for the current products and data. These are U.S. sources, not global price coverage.

A forecast is a planning estimate, not the latest local pump quote. If you are deciding how much to budget for a fill-up or what fuel cost to use in an immediate operating decision, check a current local price. The EIA’s weekly update is useful for recent regional context, but a regional average can still differ from the price at an individual station.

For a future expense, keep the forecast as one input rather than a guarantee. Consider a plausible range or a higher-cost contingency, especially if a small price change would materially affect your budget or operations.
Why a fuel-price forecast can miss
Crude oil is important, but it is only one part of the pump price
Crude oil is a major component of gasoline prices, but refining, distribution, retail margins and taxes also contribute. EIA’s 2023 analysis, using U.S. data for 2022, attributed 57% of the retail gasoline price to crude oil and 18% to refining margins. Those shares describe that historical year; they are not a fixed formula or a current breakdown. EIA’s April 2023 analysis also explains how changing assumptions can produce different consumer-price outcomes.

Supply conditions and local logistics can diverge from national expectations
Global oil supply and demand, inventories, refinery capacity and outages, pipeline or other transport constraints, and regional disruptions can affect prices. Taxes and local supply conditions also differ by place. A national outlook can therefore be broadly informative while missing the timing or size of a move in a particular market. EIA’s April 2022 Summer Fuels Outlook documented regional variation and uncertainty around supply; its examples are historical, not current regional estimates.

Forecasts depend on assumptions about future demand and supply. If either develops differently than expected, the forecast can move off course. EIA’s 2023 scenario work illustrates the point: alternate crude-oil assumptions produced a range of modeled 2023 U.S. retail gasoline prices from $3.13 to $4.03 per gallon, with modeled average household gasoline spending from $2,140 to $2,730. These are scenario outputs published in 2023, not current prices or present-day spending guidance. The EIA analysis shows why a range can be more useful than relying on one forecast number.

Do not mistake different reporting schedules for a forecast error
Two price series may move differently in the short term because they cover different periods or use different methods. EIA’s retail fuel update is weekly; the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index (CPI) motor-fuel measure is monthly. Their readings need not show identical short-term movements. BLS explains the CPI motor-fuel measure and its timing in Measuring Price Change in the CPI: Motor fuel.

Evaluate the forecast fairly
- Save the forecast as issued. Record the release date, forecast period, fuel and price measure. Do not substitute a later revision for the original forecast when assessing what it predicted.
- Choose the matching observation. Compare the forecast with the corresponding later period and geography, using the same fuel, grade, unit and dollar basis where possible.
- Compare like with like. Do not judge an annual-average forecast by one day’s pump price, or a national forecast by one station’s price. If the outlook gave scenarios or a range, assess the result against that range as well as any central estimate.
- Use the result for the next decision. For immediate needs, use current local observations. For later budgets or operations, account for uncertainty with a range or contingency.
