First compare the country printed on the card or shown in the digital gift description with the country assigned to the recipient’s platform store account. While the code is unused, contact the original retailer or sender and ask whether it can be cancelled, refunded or exchanged. Policies differ sharply by platform and by code type, and changing an account’s country is rarely a safe workaround.
Why a “wrong region” card fails
Digital game cards are usually licensed for a specific country or store region. The relevant location is normally the country attached to the recipient’s PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam or Microsoft store account—not simply where the console is physically being used. A card bought while travelling can therefore fail at home, and a gift sent across borders can be unusable even when the console model is identical.

Identify what you actually received before trying anything. A store-balance card adds wallet credit; a game gift may carry country restrictions; a downloadable game or DLC code must match the store region for the associated title; and a third-party PC key follows the seller’s activation terms. These are not interchangeable products, so the remedy can differ.

Check the region and code type before redeeming
- Read the card or digital listing. Look for the country name, currency, regional abbreviation or an “eligible countries” statement. On a physical voucher, the intended country is often printed on the card or packaging. For a digital gift, inspect the gift description and inventory details.
- Check the recipient’s store country. Open the platform account or store settings and note the country assigned to that account. Do not infer it from the console’s current location.
- Classify the code. Record whether it is wallet balance, a full-game gift, DLC, a Nintendo download code, or a third-party key.
- Stop before redemption if the countries do not match. Once value is added to an account, transfers, refunds and country changes may be unavailable.
Save the receipt or order confirmation, the original message or listing, the packaging, and any error message. Do not publish the code in a support ticket or send it to an unverified person.

Your best first move: ask the seller or sender
Contact the retailer that sold the code, or the person who bought it, as soon as you discover the mismatch. State that the code is unused and request a cancellation, refund or exchange for the recipient’s exact country and platform. Give the order number and proof of purchase, but keep the activation code private unless the retailer’s verified support process specifically requires it.
There is no universal right to a refund for a digital code. Some retailers can void an unused code; others treat all digital sales as final, especially after the code has been revealed. Platform support may confirm that the code is region-locked without being able to reverse the retailer’s sale. Do not redeem the card merely to test it: redemption can remove the seller’s ability to cancel it and can make the balance subject to the account’s terms.
Platform-by-platform rules
PlayStation Store vouchers
PlayStation voucher codes can be redeemed only in the same PlayStation Store region for which they were issued. The voucher’s region is printed on the voucher, and a PlayStation Network account’s region cannot be changed after the account is created. Moving to another country therefore does not provide a normal way to use a foreign voucher.

If the voucher appears to be from the correct region but still fails, contact PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly entering the code. Support may ask for the purchase date, the retailer, proof of purchase and photographs of both sides of the voucher. Keep those materials ready and make sure the code is not visible when sharing images publicly.
PlayStation wallet funds and content cannot be transferred between accounts. That means creating a second account in the voucher’s country is not a reliable fix for a gift intended for an existing account: any balance or content redeemed there remains subject to that account’s rules.
Nintendo eShop Cards
Nintendo eShop Cards are country-specific. They can be redeemed only on a Nintendo system or Nintendo Account set to the same country shown on the card. Nintendo says a card intended for sale in one country cannot be exchanged for a card intended for another. Its support guidance is: “We recommend you work with the retailer where you purchased the Nintendo eShop Card or find another use for it, such as giving it as a gift.”

Nintendo’s regional guidance also states that a foreign eShop card cannot be replaced, exchanged or refunded by Nintendo. A person who genuinely relocates can change the country setting on a Nintendo Account; the eShop country changes the next time the account connects. However, the account balance does not carry over when the country changes. This makes a country switch unsuitable as a casual redemption trick, especially if the account already contains funds.

Nintendo game and DLC download codes
A Nintendo download code for a game or DLC is different from an eShop balance card, but region matching still matters. The code must be redeemed on an eShop set to the same region as the game. If you have a mismatched code, Nintendo says you may give it to someone who can redeem it. Confirm that the recipient’s account and the title’s store region are eligible before transferring the code, and use only a transfer permitted by the seller’s terms.
Steam gifts and third-party keys
Steam gift purchases can carry regional restrictions. Steam displays the restriction details during purchase and in the gift description or inventory, and the list of eligible countries can change. Valve says it cannot modify or remove those restrictions. If a gift cannot be sent or accepted because of the recipient’s country, ask the purchaser or retailer about cancellation while it remains unused.

For a third-party CD key, Steam Support says it cannot provide a refund; the customer must contact the seller. Keep the seller’s order record and the exact error message. Do not try to disguise your location with a proxy or VPN. Valve warns that using one to circumvent a region restriction violates Steam’s terms and may result in account restrictions.
Microsoft and Xbox codes
Microsoft’s redemption guidance is direct: “If you bought the wrong code, please contact the retailer.” Once redeemed, a Microsoft or Xbox gift-card code adds value to the signed-in Microsoft account. Spending that value remains subject to applicable regional and product rules, and the cited guidance does not promise a universal refund for a wrong-region purchase. Contact the seller first, then use current Microsoft support for account-specific questions.

Can changing the account country solve it?
Only consider a country change when you have actually relocated and the platform’s rules are designed for that move. It is not a general-purpose way to redeem a cheaper or foreign gift.

- PlayStation: the account region cannot be changed after setup.
- Nintendo: a relocating user can change the Nintendo Account country, but the eShop balance does not carry over to the new country.
- Steam: do not use a VPN or proxy to conceal location or bypass a gift restriction; Valve warns of possible account restrictions.
- Microsoft/Xbox: use the current account and store guidance rather than assuming a country switch will convert an issued code.
Creating a second account can also strand the value, separate your game licenses, and leave you unable to transfer wallet funds. It should not be your first response to a seller error.
If a refund or exchange is refused
Ask the seller to confirm in writing why the unused code cannot be cancelled and whether an exchange is possible. If the code was a gift, the purchaser—not necessarily the recipient—may need to make the request. Preserve invoices, dates, chat transcripts and the platform error.
If seller recovery is unavailable, a legitimate alternative may be to give the code to someone whose account is in the eligible country. This is explicitly suggested by Nintendo for certain mismatched cards and download codes, but it is not a universal rule. Confirm that the platform and retailer permit the transfer, and do not sell or post the code publicly.

Do not buy a replacement until you have checked the recipient’s exact platform, account country, code type and currency. Rechecking those four details prevents a second wrong-region purchase.

- Redeeming “just to see.” A successful redemption can make cancellation impossible and attach the value to the wrong account.
- Confusing a card with a game code. Wallet cards, full-game gifts, DLC and third-party keys have different restrictions.
- Using the console’s location as the test. Account and store country generally control eligibility.
- Assuming every platform offers a refund. Nintendo refuses exchange or refund for foreign eShop cards, while Microsoft directs wrong-code buyers to the retailer.
- Trying a VPN on Steam. Location masking can violate Steam’s terms and expose the account to restrictions.
- Sending the full code in public or to an unverified “helper.” Treat an unused code like cash.

- Country assigned to the recipient’s store account
- Whether the code is unused, revealed or redeemed
- Order number, purchase date and retailer
- Exact error text and a screenshot with the code concealed
- Any platform-specific evidence requested by support, such as PlayStation voucher photographs
