What to Do When a Crypto Payment App Transaction Is Pending or Missing

A pending label is not proof that a crypto payment failed. Check its transaction ID on the correct network, verify the details, and contact the right service if it is confirmed but uncredited.

Start with the transaction details in the app, then check the transaction ID or hash on an explorer for the exact blockchain network. Confirm whether it is still pending, failed, or confirmed, and verify the destination address, asset, network, and any required memo or tag. Don’t send the payment again until you know what happened to the original: a delayed transaction may still complete.

What “pending” means

“Pending” does not by itself mean a payment failed or that the receiving account has been credited. Blockchain.com describes a progression in which a transaction is submitted but not yet in a block, then included in a block but still below the required confirmation count, and finally confirmed under the service’s rule. The number of confirmations required varies by blockchain; see Blockchain.com’s explanation of pending, confirming, and confirmed.

Even after an on-chain transaction is confirmed, an exchange or other receiving service may still need to meet its own deposit threshold, complete account checks, or credit the funds internally. Coinbase puts it this way for deposits to its platform: “Coinbase credits funds only after they’re confirmed.” A transfer can therefore be confirmed on the network but not yet visible in the destination balance.

Find the transaction and identify its type

Open the app’s transaction history and select the relevant payment. Look for a transaction ID/hash or an explorer link. If someone else sent the funds, ask them for the ID or link. Some internal transfers do not use a public blockchain transaction ID; in that case, ask the sending or receiving platform for its reference number and status.

Next, identify what kind of transaction it was. A wallet-to-wallet transfer, exchange deposit or withdrawal, provider purchase, swap, email/phone transfer, and Lightning payment can follow different status paths. For example, Coinbase documents some unaccepted email or phone transfers as cancellable, while a Lightning invoice has a status distinct from an ordinary on-chain transfer. Use the support guidance for the particular service and transaction type rather than treating every “pending” label alike.

Check the explorer status

  1. Choose the exact network. Use an explorer for the blockchain/network selected for the transfer. Searching a real transaction on the wrong network’s explorer can make it appear missing.
  2. Search the transaction ID/hash. Check whether the explorer finds it and reports pending, failed, or confirmed. Review the confirmation count and destination address.
  3. Compare the transfer details. Match the asset or token, amount, destination address, and network against the receiving app. Check whether the chain or service required a memo or destination tag and whether it was included.
  4. If it is not found, verify the origin. Confirm the sender signed and broadcast the transaction and that the ID and network are correct. Ask the sender or originating platform to investigate before trying again.

A block explorer shows public transaction data; it cannot access or change a wallet. BitBox Support Hub states: “A block explorer is a third-party service. It can display public transaction data, but it cannot access your wallet or change the transaction.”

What to do for each status

Explorer or app status Likely issue Next step
Not found on the explorer The transaction may not have been broadcast, or the ID/network may be wrong. Ask the sender or originating service to confirm broadcast and provide the correct transaction ID and network. Don’t retry until the original is accounted for.
Visible but pending or unconfirmed It may be waiting for inclusion in a block, perhaps because of network congestion, a low fee, slow block timing, or a dependency on an earlier unconfirmed transaction. Check the fee and status. Wait if the network is congested. If the fee is low, ask the sender whether their wallet supports raising it; this option is wallet- and network-dependent.
Failed or rejected The transaction did not complete as shown by the explorer or service. Check the error or service notice and contact the sender or originating platform. Confirm the funds’ current status before starting a replacement transaction.
Confirmed, but not credited The receiving service may require more confirmations, may not support that asset/network for the account, or may be processing the deposit or an account requirement. Check the destination’s deposit rules and account notifications, then contact its official support route with the transaction ID.
App says missing, explorer confirms The app may not have refreshed, or the receiving service may not yet have credited the transfer. Reopen or update the app, check notifications and account requirements, and contact the receiver if the deposit remains absent.

How long should you wait?

There is no reliable universal deadline. Network congestion, fee settings, asset, block timing, and the receiving service’s confirmation requirement all affect the wait. Check the current explorer status and the receiving service’s own deposit guidance rather than relying on a generic countdown.

Provider-specific estimates illustrate why a single timer can mislead. Exodus’s Knowledge Base, updated September 21, 2026, says most transactions are confirmed within 5–60 minutes, while noting delays can happen. Its typical pending estimates are Bitcoin 60 minutes or less and Ethereum, BNB, Cardano, Litecoin, and Solana five minutes or less. These are Exodus estimates, not guarantees for every wallet or network condition. Coinbase’s support directions likewise vary by situation: one page suggests waiting at least 30 minutes before checking the explorer for a pending send, and its guidance says some received transfers may be credited within 3–5 business days after requested account actions are completed. Those periods apply to the described Coinbase cases, not crypto transfers generally.

When the transfer is confirmed but still missing

  1. Check the receiving service’s required confirmation count and whether the exact asset and network are supported for your account and region.
  2. Review in-app notifications and account settings for requested identity verification or updated information.
  3. Contact the receiving wallet, exchange, merchant, or payment provider through its official app or website support route. Include the public transaction ID/hash, asset, network, amount, destination address, and relevant timing.
  4. If the address, network, asset, or required memo/tag was incorrect, tell the receiving service exactly what happened. Recovery may be difficult or impossible and is not guaranteed.

Confirmation thresholds differ among networks and services. BitBox’s guidance, for example, describes six confirmations as the Bitcoin-specific threshold used by BitBoxApp; it is not a universal rule for Bitcoin transfers or other assets.

Protect your account while seeking help

  • Use only the app’s official support route or the service’s official website.
  • Share a public transaction ID and only the non-sensitive context support requests.
  • Never give anyone your recovery phrase, private key, or password. A support agent or block explorer does not need them to look up a transaction.
  • Be wary of anyone promising a guaranteed reversal or asking for payment or secret credentials to recover funds.

If the explorer shows a sender-originated transaction waiting with a low fee, only the sender may be able to increase it, and only if the wallet and network support that feature. Otherwise, waiting through congestion may be the only practical option. Avoid making a duplicate transfer while the original’s status remains unclear.
