If your cordless tool battery will not charge, start with the outlet, the battery’s fit in the charger, its temperature, and the charger’s own indicator guide. If it charges but runs for much less time than before, the battery may have deteriorated. Stop using a visibly damaged or abnormal pack, and use only the charger and replacement battery specified for your exact tool platform.
First, check whether the battery is safe to use
Do not charge or use a battery that is visibly cracked, swollen, leaking, deformed, unusually hot, or otherwise abnormal. Keep it away from combustible materials and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for service and disposal. DEWALT says not to use batteries with visible damage or cracks and advises against attempting repair; Hilti says damaged packs should be serviced by the manufacturer or an authorized provider (DEWALT battery safety; Hilti operating instructions).

Work through the basic charging checks
- Check the power source. Confirm that the outlet works. If the charger has a power cord or plug that can be inspected safely, check that it is properly connected and not visibly damaged.
- Reseat the battery. Remove it and insert it fully into the charger, following the product instructions. Bosch lists incorrect insertion as a possible reason a battery will not charge (Bosch troubleshooting).
- Let the battery return to its permitted temperature range. A pack that has just been used heavily may be too warm to charge; a very cold pack may also be outside its charging conditions. Let it warm or cool gradually at room temperature. Do not apply direct heat or cooling.
- Inspect accessible contacts. Look for visible dirt on the battery and charger contacts, then follow the manual’s cleaning instructions. Do not use metal tools, liquids, or solvents unless the manufacturer permits them, and never bridge the terminals. Bosch lists dirty contacts as a possible charging problem (Bosch troubleshooting).
- Check the indicator guide for that exact charger. Light patterns differ by model and brand. Do not interpret a light using instructions for another charger.
Temperature limits and indicator lights depend on the model
Charging temperatures are product specifications, not one universal limit for all cordless-tool batteries. The cited Bosch product instructions give a charging range of 0–45°C, while STIHL gives 5–40°C for its battery system. Check the manual for your battery rather than applying either range to another brand (Bosch product instructions; STIHL battery charging guidance).

Indicator meanings are just as model-specific. Makita documents a flashing red light as a charging delay while a battery cools or when it is too cold; for the charger model covered by its FAQ, flashing red and green indicates a defective battery. Bosch lists a continuous battery indicator on one product among signs of an internal charger error or out-of-range temperature (Makita FAQs; Bosch troubleshooting). These examples are not universal codes: use the indicator guide for your model.

DEWALT Support described a specific battery family whose charger delays reset or charging until the pack cools below 60°C. That threshold applies to the behavior described for that family, not to other batteries (DEWALT Support, 2020).
Work out whether the battery or charger is at fault
If the battery looks normal and the basic checks do not resolve the problem, compare it only with a known-working battery or charger from the same compatible platform, and follow the manufacturers’ instructions. Do not try an unapproved charger or adapter as a shortcut. If the charger continues to show an error after reseating the battery and following any power-reset procedure in its manual, stop forcing the connection and contact the manufacturer or authorized service. Bosch recommends authorized after-sales service for a recurring charger error (Bosch troubleshooting).

If it charges but runs out quickly
Compare runtime under similar conditions: the same tool, type of work, and workload. A battery that now lasts significantly less time after charging may have deteriorated. Bosch identifies significantly reduced operating time after charging as evidence that the battery has deteriorated and must be replaced (Bosch product instructions). This is a useful diagnostic clue, not a diagnosis that applies identically to every platform.

Do not rely on a reset, deep discharge, or improvised repair to restore capacity. If runtime remains poor, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider to assess the battery.

Service, replacement, and recycling
If a battery no longer holds charge, follow the service and disposal options for your brand and country. DEWALT directs users to service centers for batteries that no longer hold charge and says not to attempt repairs. Makita lists its factory service centers or a local recycling facility as options (DEWALT battery safety; Makita FAQs). Availability and collection arrangements may vary by location, so check current local guidance.
Before replacing a confirmed faulty battery or charger, match it to the exact tool platform, voltage, and model requirements. Use a genuine or explicitly manufacturer-approved pack and the charger specified for it. Makita warns that non-genuine or altered batteries can interfere with electronic communication and create fire, injury, or property-damage risks; DEWALT also recommends authentic compatible packs (Makita FAQs; DEWALT battery safety).
