If a cloud-hosted website or app goes offline, first confirm what is failing, then check both the provider’s public status page and the health view for your account or project. A clear public page does not rule out an incident affecting a specific service, region, account, or workload. Record what you see, investigate the application and its dependencies, and use a practiced recovery plan rather than attempting an unverified failover or restore.
1. Verify what is actually offline
Before changing infrastructure, establish the scope of the failure. Try the site or app from another device or network, and check whether the problem affects the whole service or only a page, feature, or group of users. A narrowly affected route may point toward an application component rather than a full hosting outage; these checks are practical troubleshooting, not a provider-mandated procedure.

Capture the visible error and when it began. Note affected routes or features, the region or service if known, and any recent changes. These details make it easier for your team or provider to investigate without relying on memory during an incident.
2. Check provider health at both scopes
Look at the cloud provider’s public status information and, if available, the signed-in account or project health view. They can report different scopes of events. A public page may focus on broad-impact incidents, while a personalized view can show notices relevant to your services. The provider documentation reviewed on October 11, 2026 describes the following distinctions; live incident information and product interfaces can change.

When assessing a status signal, check which product, service, and region it covers; when the incident was last updated; whether the affected components match your workload; and what kinds of incidents the provider says it publishes. A blank public page is useful information, but its scope limits what it can prove.
3. Investigate the workload if status pages are clear
If neither channel shows a relevant incident, continue investigating rather than concluding that the cloud provider is not involved. Check account or project notices, then review the application’s recent changes, dependencies, and logs according to your team’s runbook. The provider status channels describe reported infrastructure events; they do not diagnose every failure in an individual website or app.

4. Report, recover, and review
Google Cloud’s incident guidance describes a workflow of “Verify→ Investigate→Report→Resolve→Review” for suspected Google Cloud incidents. It is a useful sequence to adapt to your own service and team, not a universal standard.

Share the observed error, start time, affected routes or features, known region or service, and recent changes with the responsible team. If you contact the provider, use the relevant account or project details and incident information available to you.

Recover using a practiced plan
Use the service owner’s established recovery plan. Before failing over or restoring a backup, confirm that the target environment, permissions, dependencies, and backup are ready for this workload. A region switch or restore is not automatically safe simply because it is available.
Review the incident
After service is restored, review what happened and update the runbook or recovery steps where needed. Google Cloud’s incident-handling guidance, published September 15, 2026, provides further context on its workflow.

Prepare before the next outage
- Design the service with failure in mind and document who owns each recovery decision.
- Practice restoration steps and verify that the backup, permissions, dependencies, and target environment work together.
- Make sure the people responding know where to check both public status and account- or project-specific health information.
- Consider external uptime monitoring as an additional way to notice user-visible failures; provider dashboards and monitoring serve different purposes.
