What to Do When a Circuit Breaker Trips Immediately After Resetting

A breaker that trips again immediately is warning you of a problem. Learn the safe external checks to make, when to stop, and what not to attempt.

If a circuit breaker trips again as soon as you reset it, switch off or unplug accessible appliances on that circuit, make at most one normal reset attempt, and leave the breaker off if it trips again. Don’t keep resetting it: the trip is a protective warning, not a diagnosis. Contact a qualified electrician to find the cause.

What to do now

  1. Stop and check for warning signs. If you notice unusual heat, a burning smell, burn marks, or buzzing or crackling, stop using the affected circuit. Don’t touch the panel or wiring; contact a qualified professional promptly. Electrical Safety First identifies these as warning signs that should not be ignored: Electrical Safety Advice for Smart Homes.
  2. Switch off or unplug accessible appliances on the affected circuit, if it is safe to do so. Don’t move or handle anything that is hot, damaged, or sparking.
  3. If there are no warning signs, you may make one routine reset attempt. Move the breaker handle fully to OFF, then move it to ON. A tripped breaker can rest in an intermediate position, so it may need to be moved fully to OFF first. See the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s reset guidance.
  4. If it trips again, leave it off. Don’t repeat the reset cycle or try to hold the breaker in place. Arrange diagnosis by a qualified electrician.

Why a breaker may trip again

An immediate trip signals that the protective device has detected a problem, but the timing alone cannot tell you what the problem is. Possible causes include too many appliances drawing power, a malfunctioning appliance, a short circuit, a ground fault, or an arc fault. These possibilities require different diagnosis; don’t assume one cause based only on the symptom.

Too many appliances on the circuit

Several loads drawing power at once can overload a circuit. Switching off or unplugging accessible appliances is a cautious first step, but if the breaker still trips, leave it off and call an electrician rather than testing combinations by repeatedly resetting it. CPSC consumer guidance says to investigate why a breaker trips and not simply reset it: CPSC consumer safety information.

A problem with an appliance

If one particular appliance appears to trigger the trip, keep it disconnected. CPSC advises disconnecting a product when problems develop and having it examined by a competent repair person. Don’t reconnect it to see whether the problem happens again.

A wiring or other electrical fault

A short circuit, ground fault, or arc fault can also cause a trip. A homeowner cannot safely distinguish these from an overload by watching when the breaker trips. Leave the breaker off and have a qualified electrician investigate. ESFI describes frequent trips as a problem for a qualified electrician to inspect: Fuse and Breaker Breakdown.

Why you should not keep resetting it

A breaker is a protective device. Resetting it does not resolve whatever made it trip, and repeated attempts can keep an unsafe circuit energized. In a 2024 ESFI survey of electrical occupations in California focused on AFCI and GFCI performance, 54% of electrical contractor service calls involved tripped breakers or fuses. That survey result describes its defined sample, not the prevalence of breaker problems among U.S. households: ESFI’s 2024 AFCI and GFCI Performance Survey.

Do not open the panel, handle exposed wiring, test live wiring, replace the breaker, or install a breaker with a higher rating. The trip alone does not establish the fault, installation requirements, or correct protective device. Those are matters for a qualified electrician and applicable local standards.

When to call an electrician

Call a qualified electrician if the breaker trips again after the normal reset attempt, if the cause is unclear, or if it trips frequently. Seek help promptly if you notice heat, a burning smell, burn marks, buzzing, or crackling; don’t investigate the wiring yourself. Electrical licensing and terminology vary by location, so use a professional qualified under your local requirements.
